  1. It's a good hockey deal for the Habs, quite apart from personalities involved. No G.M. or coach looks more than 5 years down the road in terms of a deal. That's a lifetime in professional sports. Good chance at least one of the principals will have moved on again in that time frame, and if the execs focus on longer term they probably won't be around to find out the results in any case. Whether you view Subban as refreshing or a shallow poser is inconsequential. Shea Weber makes the team better now, and for the next 5 years at least. His effectiveness does not depend on pure athleticism to nearly the same extent as Subban's does, so I don't think it's likely the Habs lose in the long term either. Being popular off the ice is of no consequence on the ice, it doesn't win games for the team or job security for management. It's probably a lot more useful in Nashville which struggles for support and attention in a market dominated by the NFL, with hockey trailing a few other sports locally in terms of popularity and media coverage. But the Montreal Canadiens do not have to worry about ticket sales or media attention. They have to worry only about winning and reviving a tradition. Marc Bergevin made some good moves in that direction over the past 10 days or whatever.

  2. http://www.rds.ca/hockey/canadiens/scherbak-veut-corriger-le-tir-cette-saison-1.3455299 Here's a link to the Nikita Scherbak interview. It's on RDS.ca, but the interview is in english. I really like this Kid. I really hope he turns into a bonafide scorer with the Habs. Enjoy!

  3. As the cap rises, the percentage of his cap hit towards the team decreases. No way of knowing how good he will be that far down the road, but it's guaranteed that he will take up less cap space in the future than he does now. Whereas a new Subban deal will be related to the new inflated cap number. You're comparing Brian Campbell's deal he signed in 2016 to Shea Weber in 2022. One is a better player than the other and inflation is a real thing.

  4. I'll add a point of view that is different on the contract issue. Weber is locked in at 7.8 million for ten years. Subban is at 9 million for 6 more. When that contract is up, assuming he is still a top end defenseman will likely get a raise. So the cap hit over the length of Weber's contract will actually have more separation than the 1.2 million there is now between them. And because alot of the real money on Weber's contract has already been paid, that carries value in it as well. You can argue one way or another who will be better in 6 years but I don't think we inherited that terrible of a contract when you compare it over the entire length.

  6. Keep hearing that management discussed with the players at the end of the 2016 season "what happened" and players said PK was becoming a distraction in the room and instead of waiting for it to snowball into an even bigger problem in 2017 and beyond, MB was up against the gun to trade Subban before July 1st. Thing is, not many teams can afford the $9M salary and teams weren't offering anything mind-blowing. It wasn't until Shea Weber's name got suggested by NSH that MB again tried to see if he could get a better offer but didn't, and then made the trade. MB was pushing hard for a deal with EDM for Draisaitl, Klefbom and the 4th pick (which they would've taken Dubois) but that fell through when CLB took Dubois. This isn't Therrien vs. PK - the room was simply sick of him and with Muller coming in, I bet the players came forward even more to Kirk about how the locker room was slowly becoming a distraction. I've read a lot on here over the past 5 days about how this is Therrien's fault, the Habs are racist, and MB is an idiot/lier but I think the truth is, the Montreal Canadien players wanted a change and pushed management to deal PK. And by players I mean Pacioretty, Price, Plekanec and Gallagher. I, for one, think the addition of Weber makes the Canadiens a better 'team'. I hope this translates to a Stanley Cup over the next 3 years and I think the additions of Radulov and Shaw are great as well. Anyways, I'll miss PK but I'm still bleu-blanc-rouge for life.

  7. Actually, its not that PK was traded that has CC-- and many of us, including me--going through the five stages of grief mostly alternating between grief and despair( kudos to Norm for helping me identify what was happening). No. Most of the die hard fans that are taking this trade badly are questioning our fandom because the trade seems dumb. How could management not get more?! And if they couldn't get more then they felt compelled to take what they could get for PK. In that case, they weren't just shopping him, they were desperate to get rid of him. Once again, if PK had brought back Weber and a top prospect we wouldn't be so devastated as our faith in management--a relatively new group, which we had high hopes for-- would not have been shattered. I was hoping that if they did trade PK the return would be a home-run for Montreal. As it turns out, MB couldn't even get Nashville to include a top young forward or a prospect. Given that our most desperate need is a top 6 forward this trade seems like a sideways move at best and given Weber's age, far more likely to turn out like the Chelios or Gomez deals . To summarize, we have not "gone off the deep end". On the contrary, we are bereft, because a manager we had faith in made a bad trade that has almost no hope of being a long-term win for our beloved Habs. From a manager who preaches patience and a long term plan it is a hard thing to swallow That's why CC is mulling over As I have already posted, I can't seem to break my own addiction to this team so I will continue to hope that everyone who thinks that Nashville got a steal on this trade is wrong and that Bergevin is a genius. However, only a Cup will make me feel better about this trade. .

  8. Weber will probably be done or worth $3m in 6 years. Campbell just signed for less than that in chicago.
