  1. Well Andersson did both... he tossed his medal and looked weepy and distraught over the loss (of the game, not the medal.) Seems to me they are both reactions to being ultra-competitive.

  2. After seeing the video of Andersson throwing away his silver medal, i was just going to post that the Habs should trade for him. That's the type of player I want on this team. Friggin Cup or bust. I want a guy with the "2nd Place is the first loser" type mentality.

  3. I hope you're right. The philosophy you describe was the one that routinely used to be cited by Montreal Canadiens management ("if it's a tie, we go with the francophone") and is completely unobjectionable. But while I'm OK with the "affirmative action" approach to coaching, the more the organization restricts itself to bilingual applicants throughout, the more it is handcuffing itself.

  4. No. Montreal tried to interview Jim Nill for the position but he said no. I've long maintained if there's two equal candidates, the francophone will get the interview. But if someone is exceptional and anglo, they will get a call. Nill was considered the best guy without a GM job, which is why he got a call. If the Canadiens go GM searching without a top candidate, I bet Paul Fenton in Nashville gets a call and he's a Boston boy.

  5. I'm certainly not saying the kid should be drawn and quartered. He made a mistake, and apparently the medal was returned to him. However, I think people are confusing the nature of competitiveness, and implying that the Habs' current woes are a result of not having enough guys with an attitude like that. Of all the great Montreal Canadiens, the only one I can think of who would have done something like that was Patrick Roy - the same guy who flipped the bird to the crowd and stomped off the team in a temper-tantrum that he has regretted ever since. Bob Gainey, Ken Dryden, Larry Robinson, Maurice Richard, Henri Richard, Jean Beliveau - none of them would have done that. Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr, Mark Messier, Sidney Crosby - none of them would have done that either. For such players, a kind of internal discipline is part and parcel of what made them successful. The same is true of the best, championship-calibre players on the current team, i.e., Carey Price and Shea Weber. If you don't think those guys are intense competitors, then you're not paying attention. Heck, I don't think PK Subban, the other championship-calibre player the Habs have produced in the last decades, would act like that either. (The idea that he is a selfish punk has always been subliminal-racist nonsense.) It is a false binary, then, to say that UNLESS you act like a childish baby when you lose, you are not a competitor. No one is going to believe this, but I've read several articles over the years remarking that Pacioretty deeply wants to win and takes the responsibility for the team's losing on his own shoulders. That is part of the reason he is playing so badly now that the Habs have surrounded him with human garbage. It's killing him. The Habs aren't losing because they lack character, let alone losing because they don't have enough childish babies who act out in public when they lose. They're losing because they suck.

  6. You'd think that with him gone for nearly a month, they'd have had time to make their decision. The only real holdup I could see now is Sean Burke saying that Canada hasn't decided whether they want Mete for the Olympic team.

  7. Agreed. But I liked that he showed the anger over losing.

  8. So it's either junior, or a combination of the pressbox and tutelage under the brilliant mind of JJ Daignault at practice? Same conclusion....junior/Olympics is the better path.

  9. A great piece by Brendan Kelly in the Gazette: http://montrealgazette.com/sports/hockey/nhl/montreal-canadiens/what-the-puck-time-to-fire-montreal-canadiens-gm-marc-bergevin

  10. I want the player who throws away the medal than the kids who are crying. i want the guy who is angry with losing, not the "boo hoo, boo hoo, i'm so sad and disappointed we lost". I remember Chelios refusing to shake hands in the playoffs - that was also considered not classy. But i'd rather have that than the "Woe is Us/I'm so sad" crybaby.

  11. To New York Rangers - Max Pacioretty To Montreal Canadiens - Lias Andersson - John Gilmour - 1st Round Pick 2018 I'm sure someone in the Rangers organization is angry at him for tossing the silver medal in the crowd. Capitalize on it.

  12. Weber will get the "C" if and when Patches is moved.

  13. Someone give this wise and perceptive poster a kewpie doll! Or at least a Marvel No Prize.

  14. If that's the criteria, then give the C to Gallagher right now. He's the one guy that you can honestly say never takes the night off. He may have bad nights, but never due to a lack of effort.

  15. Isnt that what happens to the rest of the population. Why should the athlete be different. Even after a referendum, there is going to be a huge number of people who voted no and are now in a new country.

  16. 1) He's not a centre, so who is watching him with blinders on. He's played 2 games at centre all season and 0 games at centre last season (AHL included). So yeah, when you call him a centre, you show just how little you actually know about Hudon. 2) I think Hudon is already, right now, a very good third line winger. Duclair had an excellent rookie season, but has had some bad years since then. I'm not sure he's better than a third liner either.

  17. I think though Pacioretty is underperforming, he’s basically in an impossible situation right now. Almost zero newly minted captains will gain a good reputation for being a leader if their team isn’t performing. That at being said, I think Pacioretty has been an extremely mature leader during his time as captain, and is performing really well as an off-ice leader. But his style of game doesn’t scream high intensity ala Gallagher. This means when he isn’t producing, he looks quite ineffective. Is he the guy for Montreal at this time? Probably not. Is he captain material? I think so. It’s just not really going his way.

  18. Add Jake Evans to the B level. Gregoire is holding down the D/Fourth level as well.

  19. This team's prospect cupboard is a lot better than you give it credit for. Blue Chips Poehling is having a fantastic season for an 18 year old in the NCAA. Josh Brook looks amazing in Moose Jaw right now. Mete is far better than you are giving him credit for. A level Scherbak has found his game in Laval. Noah Juulsen looks like a top 4 D. Lindgren, McNiven, Hawkey, and Primeau all look good as goalies, but goalies are voodoo, and who knows, but with 4 good ones, one is bound to turn out. B Level Will Bitten has 27 points in his last 17 games. Cale Fleury, Jared Tsyzka, are both having strong seasons. Both could use defensive work. Jake Evans looks great as a senior in the NCAA Third Level Ikonen is playing against men and struggling a bit. Vejdemo is having his best season yet in Sweden. Lernout is a bit of a question mark, but earned a call-up. I'd like to see more from Scott Walford but he's still been decent. Better defensively than offensively. Longshots Gregoire and Audette have had flashes, but are probably not going to be NHLers. A really nice draft, along with big development years from Mete, Bitten and Scherbak make this pool look much better than it did a year ago. Its a big improvement. Add to that 4 picks in the top 62 in what should be a good draft this year.
