  2. In recent weeks, there has been an uptick in posters that have decided to simply down vote posts based on who the poster is, not the content of the post. Others seem to down vote anything that doesn't exactly match their opinion which is not what the voting system is for. Instead, multiple threads devolved into discussions about the system itself, often accompanied by a rapid series of down votes. At this point, that function seems to be doing more harm than good. Accordingly, I've decided to disable that button for the time being. I'm open to considering re-enabling it down the road but I'm hopeful that this will improve things on here.

  3. I haven’t posted since game one since it’s been a rough week for us here. We lost my father in law yesterday. He fought a tough 2yr battle against lung cancer. He was a first generation Greek immigrant who loved sports (and gambling). Biggest Red Sox fan I ever knew. The only condition he laid out when I asked for his daughters hand in marriage was that I root for the Sox’s. Told him that was a small price to pay. Although he wasn’t a die hard hockey fan, he always supported the bruins. Until his grandson became a die hard Habs fan that is. We went to several Montreal Boston games over the years and he started to have a soft spot for Montreal, especially since my son loved them so much. He loved Suzuki from the first day he saw him play. All day long I’ve been thinking about how the greatest joy he ever had was when the Red Sox’s came back from 0-3 to beat the Yankees in 2004 to crush the bambino curse. And all I can think of is that he if he was around he would have laid money on Montreal to come back and beat Tampa. He could never turn down a bet like that. If we manage to come back and win the cup it will be because he had his hand in it. Consider it his gift for his 8 yr old die hard grandson who’s celebrating his birthday this coming Monday July 12th. Miss you so much already. Hope you’re watching with us from above ❤️

  4. I rarely post anymore and was saving post number 1000 for something special like a Cup win one more time before I leave this world. I've been a lifelong fan of the Canadiens going back to the original dynasty, and my dad was alive for every single Stanley Cup victory the Habs had. But I feel it's important to thank my mother right now. She passed away in her late 90's earlier today. She was a long time Detroit Red Wings fan from the earliest days, which always made for some heated Saturday nights way back when, but I think she talked to those stubborn Forum ghosts today - she knew how much I loved my Canadiens. So I will give thanks for this as it brings a bit of joy to a rather sad day for our family. Les Canadiens Sont La

  5. Inch for inch, pound for pound the Pocket Rocket is the toughest player I've ever seen to lace up his skates in the NHL. My hockey days go back to the big dynasty of the late 50's, so I've seen a lot of players in the NHL, and none were tougher than #16 Playing in the shadows of "the Rocket" and "Le Gros Bill" Henri , unfortunately never quite received the attention or the accolades he truly deserved. But anyone who watched him play, that understood the fine points of the game could see just how good he really was. And, just how valuable he was to the team (Toe Blake once referred to him as his MVP during their Stanley Cup years) At 5'-7" and the younger brother of "the Rocket" he was quickly challenged by the tough guys in his rookie year who thought they could intimidate him. They rather foolishly figured he'd be easy pickings given his size, but they soon found out he could hold his own and a whole lot more. He was every bit as tough, and almost as mean as his big brother was, and wouldn't need anyone to fight his battles. They quickly learned to respect him for who he was and the talent he had. He may not have possessed the sheer and overpowering dynamics of his brother, but looking back on his career I'd say he was the better of the two brothers. From the blueline in, "the Rocket" was the meanest, the nastiest and the most intense payer I've ever watched (Ovechkin comes very close to him) and Beliveau was the most graceful, elegant and classiest to ever grace the sports field anywhere, Henri Richard was the best overall player of the two. His game was more complete, and his roles more vital in the overall sense of the game. He was as good as any of the true legends and did it at both ends of the rink on a consistent basis. His legacy is one that will never be broken - that of 11 Stanley Cups in a career that spanned 20 years. The Pocket Rocket was a Stanley Cup champion in 55% of the years he played for the Canadiens. As an old and long time Habs fan, who hails from the town they played their very first game against (the Cobalt Silver Kings) I say good-bye to one of the best who ever graced the ice of the old Forum. (FYI - just a long time lurker that hasn't posted in ages)

  9. I've noticed over the last week or so that certain posters are getting downvoted simply for who they are and not for the content of their post. This stops now. I've finally figured out how to make it so that the moderators can see who is up/downvoting posts so we can start to keep tabs on who the culprits are. I won't name names publicly (you know who you are) but to those who are doing so, be advised that if it continues, there will be suspensions forthcoming. This will be the only warning.

  10. While it was definitely time to part ways with DD, and I am amazed we got back any sort of NHL asset in return for his services, unlike many hereabouts I do feel a bit sad to see him go. He was part of the Habs during some pretty decent years and *was* a good player for us for a number of seasons. I also think that his story - an undrafted, tiny, not-especially-fast player relying wholly on smarts, vision and guile to carve out a career in the big leagues against all odds - was a great one and under-appreciated by the fanbase. Best wishes to Davey, may he find a home in Edmonton.

  14. I figured if I didn't include the current year in the title it would set off a frenzy of posts from people scorned over the last few years. The focus of this thread is the moves made by Bergevin in the current year and how they have set up this team to it's surprising-to-most good start. The 18-19 Habs edition is noticeably different than it's predecessor, mainly by their style, but also by their.....attitude. There's that catch word everybody loves, yet it is apparent. Guys are competing every single shift, there is such an internal competition that it is pushing everyone to their max. Scratching free agent signing Plekanec and big contract Alzner to start the season was a Julien decision, and it wasn't held back by any fictitious Bergevin ego. This team now has an identity, and that is speed and attitude. I recall against Detroit when Drouin was hurt with a shot block and finally got to his feet, only to get shoved by Bertuzzi. Well here come like 3 Habs to his defense looking to fight him, haven't seen that in a long time. It seems like there is alot of cohesion on this team and it is fun to watch. Now let's look at the moves made in this calendar year in no particular order: *Hires highly successful Joel Bouchard out of the Q to coach Laval *Hires World Junior Championship coach Dominique Doucharme as an assistant coach *Trades life long Hab Plekanec to the rival Leafs for a pick and prospects, only to get him back for free via UFA *Trades a disgruntled Galchenyuk who never found a role with the team after 6 (!) seasons, for Max "100 times better than his Dad" Domi *Does not give in to Buffalo's demands in a trade for Ryan O'Rielly *Acquires Joel Armia for money that isn't his *Trades a 5th (!) round pick to Minnesota for Mike "looks like a top 4 D to me" Rielly *Signs Xavier Ouellet for maybe the minimum (I'm not looking it up) *Drafts Jasperi Kotkaniemi who looks like a stud so far, despite the majority of fans wanting someone else *Speaking of drafting centers, he drafts 7 of them (looked that one up) *Trades captain Max Pacioretty for Thomas Tatar, who in a small sample size looks to win the trade by himself and is under team control for longer for a lower overall cap hit, PLUS a 13th overall center prospect and a 2nd rounder (!) Do I even have to mention the return that LWs Jeff Skinner and Mike Hoffman got? *Names Shea Weber the 30th captain of the Montreal Canadiens despite him being out due to injury. It's not going to player vote this time guys Say whatever you want about the past, but it is hard to argue against anything that Marc Bergevin has done in 2018

  16. I do a lot with the Youngstown Phantoms of the USHL. I don’t know the set up for the league you might billot for - in the USHL the players often have their own transportation. But I would say this - for the players - it’s about the food. I’m not sure the hosts were paid enough to feed the players properly. That said - if your family loves hockey and feeds well and is basically sociable with teens (not too involved, not too distant) - then it’s an awesome thing to do. The players will be respectful and appreciative (unless you get a real dud - but I found those are rare) and you’ll create a friendship that will last for decades. (Unfortunately, Curtis Hall, a good kid I became friends with got drafted by the Bruins in the 4th round - i can’t easily root for him anymore) you can always message me if i can help more. Overall - if the transport is figured out and you feed well and are appropriately sociable .... GO FOR IT!!!!

  17. I feel like one of the few excited for this series. Did I mention in the thread title that it is HABS VS LEAFS IN THE PLAYOFFS?! It's almost as if everyone forgets that all bets are off the table when these two face each other. Why the doom and gloom? If you can't get up for this series then what can you get up for? Reasons to be optimistic (adjective; hopeful and confident about the future.) I added that for some here that don't know what that means: Carey Price - First off, he is back from an injury plagued season. When he is on top of his game he is the best in the world and can easily steal a series. Despite inconsistency in seasons past, he has brought it in the playoffs. He is a big game player, plain and simple. Name another goalie you'd want in a winner take all game. The team is rested and healthy - The Habs played something like 25 games in 44 days to finish off the season. Along the way they got banged up and bruised. Well they are all back now except for Drouin (who could technically come back anytime) and Weber is likely still hurting a bit. Gallagher will be back buzzing around and the record with him in the lineup is night and day compared to when he is out. Danault is also back and will be on Matthews like glue. Practice - Yes I'm talking practice. Practice? Not the game but practice. Since DD took over he has literally had no time to work full practices. We can complain about his decisions all day, but a coach needs time to practice with his team, especially a new one. Playoff hockey - It is of my opinion and many others, that the Habs are a team built for the playoffs. What does that even mean illWill? Well it means that the pace of play, the intensity, and the refs call the game differently. We are much more physical than the Leafs. Period. Remember Corey Perry during the playoffs last year? You think Big Josh Anderson isn't going to put someone through the boards? How do you feel about another Weber cross check to the back Auston Matthews? There's no crying in the playoffs. Gallagher would literally deflect a point shot with his teeth if he knew it might go in. Habs have players willing to do what it takes to win. Leafs annual choke - Did you guys happen to watch the Leafs over the last 17 years? It isn't pretty. Year after year their expectations are sky high and yet they crumble to the ground. Fun fact: they didn't even make the playoffs last year. So they add a geriatric Jumbo and a washed up Simmonds and now it is the cup for them? This team cannot face adversity. Is Nylander going to mess up his hair to make a play? Jack Campbell is their starter now, what has he ever done? That's all I have for now, might come back and rant a bit later if I think of anything Habs in 6

  18. Drouin won't get a point there, but he drew the penalty and made the play along the boards to start the goal (a 3rd assist type pass). He also has an assist tonight. Clearly has taken his game to another level this season.

  21. I'll start by saying your view point in this post is completely understandable, you bring up good points that validate your skepticism and that of others. However imo, you are omitting some of the bigger picture positives that could be incorporated to lighten your view of the current situation with this team. For point 1, i'd sooner see a competent President of Hockey operations get brought in, to help infuse more insight in important hockey deals and also keep people accountable if trust becomes a factor. That person would then be entrusted to assure mediocrity is not a strategy, that building towards contention is the constant goal no matter what part of the cycle we are at. For point 2, I think of it as a relationship with a significant other, if you had a turbulent, up and down, first 4 or 5 years and were on the verge of ending it all, but then decided to give it one more honest effort to make it work. You would realistically use that as a reset point, if things were going well during that reset, you wouldn't be trying to throw the issues of the past back in each others faces, that would impossibly lead to no other outcome but a negative one. I think we can mostly agree if not all agree, MB had done enough to get himself fired after the 2017 season, no one would have really protested against it. A decision was made to give him one last chance to do things differently this time, taking with him the baggage from his previous years, good and bad, and make something better of it this time. I fully believe he was well aware this was his last life and he intended to make the best of it with what he had learned on the job. He was given the opportunity to try again one last time, whether we agree or not if he deserved it is beside the point, it is what happened. It is why some of us, myself included, do treat this as a reset point, and do indeed differentiate it with his other years on the job. This is with very little doubt, the moment he got his last chance from the organization, his back against the wall moment, his opportunity to show evolution and positive growth within his job. What he has done and will continue to do during this phase of his GM tenure here is the bulk of what I am evaluating him for at the moment, others here as well. For point 3, the prospect situation has undeniably improved, it has practically sky rocketed into the top 5 around the league. And while you are absolutely correct in your assessment that it does not guarantee success or contention, it does present options, very good ones. The option to build from within, the option to fill holes with cheaper and younger prospects while moving more expensive pieces away opening new opportunity down the line to upgrade certain roster needs. The option to fast track certain situations by using a deep prospect pool as trade chips to fix glaring holes becomes another option on the table. A calculated combination of both options could yield great results as well. Look at Boston for instance, all you need is a couple of organizational prospects to really pan out, smart salary management a long the way and suddenly you are contending again with players from the previous window. They didn't have to sink into the abyss and trade away Chara, Bergeron and Krecji to reset themselves as contenders, they had Pastrnak, DeBrusk, Krug, McAvoy, and Coyle latch themselves onto the previous core and contention was achieved without endless years of bottom feeding. Not trying to guarantee that is how our own prospect situation will pan out, because that would be impossible, but with guys like KK, Suzuki, Fleury, Romanov, Poehling, to name a few, there is a lot to be positive about what can attach itself to the core veterans like Price, Weber, Petry, Gallagher, etc. It could potentially sprout the kind of team that stops worrying about making the playoffs every season and starts worrying about trying to win the division every season, and making deep playoff runs, and who knows after that. But at least you are in the group you want to be in, the one you are building towards year after year, where you are a team that could win it all. Finally, as for what you want, you are correct, your ask is not astronomical by any means, but it does not exactly align with what has been happening since the "Reset" began. I think what MB is looking for within these initial seasons was growth from within and where it would come from and from whom. Fundamentally, you have to know these things before you can truly start including some of your top 5 prospects in various trade proposals to bolster parts of your roster you know require your attention. It is no secret MB valued a C upgrade in Duchene, and an LD upgrade in Gardiner this summer, neither of those options came to fruition, and it is what it is. While it was disappointing to see those options slip by, I was impressed by the fact instead of resorting to short sighted patch jobs as he had in the past. He committed to his youth, and challenged them to be the difference makers at the present, while leaving himself the necessary resources to make a move at any point , should the right one present itself, to take a step forward. I see a changed approach, a changed strategy and a much improved thought process just there alone, it leaves more than enough room for optimism going forward, I know you can see that too. There is nothing wrong with acknowledging that we are on a very different path now than we were before, and that it could lead to some promising results if managed correctly going forward. That is not at all the same as singing Yippi Ka Ye or whatever, it is not the definition of insanity, where you do the same thing over and over and expect a different result. This feels very different, this looks different, and for that reason, optimism that this could end up working out much better is warranted imo.

  22. We've all lived through them Cuc. Our allegiance can never be doubted. As for your ridiculous number of posts, thank you. You're definitely a hall of famer in that regard. Always poised, composed and thorough. Little side note: I'm a born and raised Montrealer who currently lives and is raising his family in Connecticut. My wife is originally from here. She (like I) were children of greek immigrants who for better or worse were involved in the restaurant industry. When I decided to buy out my inlaws and renovate their legacy store I had to clear out the furnace/storage room. While doing so I came across my personal holy grail. One game used Patrick Roy Sherwood goalie stick from the mid eighties with a broken shaft and an autographed Roy Koho stick from his days in Colorado. I personally lost my sh!t when I discovered them. My father in law couldn't even remember how he got them. He recalls having a customer of his that worked at the Hartford Civic Center who might have brought them to him. But of all the players that funneled through the NHL in the years the Whalers were in the league what are the odds that it would be my hero's? I grew up the biggest Roy fan. Met him at a softball tournament in Joilette in 1987. It was a larger than life experience for an 11yr old me. Safe to say they are both mounted on my office wall.

  24. I was actually listening to a Craig Custance podcast with Lawrence Gilman, who used to be the Canucks A.GM, and was hired by the league to help with the expansion draft rules. Basically, GMs made rules... and then he did an excercise where he looked at every team, looked at who they were likely to protect and projected what the rules would mean and what Vegas would look like. He mentioned a few things. 1) the original draft of the rules was even more generous to vegas. It required teams to put a certain amount of salary exposed, it would have made them even better as better players were exposed. The process he went through made the rules tougher on Vegas. 2) McPhee started to make his deals with teams at the trade deadline. This really helped them. These deals were registered with the league, but not announced. This was so if a GM got fired between the end of the season and the expansion draft, the deal would still be in place with the new regime. 3) One thing Gilman said would really hurt Vegas would be teams trading away players prior to expansion. Sort of like our Beaulieu to Buffalo deal. Guys one team couldnt' protect but another team could. This happened in a few cases, but not as many as Gilman anticipated. The really smart thing McPhee did was "The Pledge". Any team he made a deal with to take one of their players... or things like that... he forced them to agree that they would not make any other deals of this type to circumvent protection lists. This helped him keep as many players available as possible. 4) He leveraged his cap space and used it as a weapon. Taking on contracts like David Clarkson and Mikhail Grabovski in order to get better deal from the Blue Jackets and Islanders. Gilman thought a team might do that, but he praised McPhee as he got absolute max value out of doing it. 5) He built a team. He didn't just take the best players available necessarily, but he focused on a real concept of what he wanted from his team from day 1.... that concept was speed. 6) He maxed out on the number of D he was allowed to draft under the rules. Because of the rules, D were the best assets available. 7) It was one team of expansion, so he was able to plan his picks very methodically. He didn't have to worry about a second expansion team competing for the same group of players, like previous two team expansions had to. This allowed him and Vegas to keep running the same scenario over and over and absolutely maximize every asset they would get out of the draft. Gilman's main takeaway was that McPhee did an absolutely perfect job under the rules. He basically didn't make one bad move. At the same time he took advantage of team's like Florida and Columbus and Minnesota who gave him extra assets not to take their players. He felt teams overreacted to losing one player, and should have just lost that player and not made these multi-asset trades. The last thing (and this is important for the Habs), teams only had one year to plan for expansion. They didn't know the rules. Now GMs have 2-3 years to know what they will be facing, and can manipulate their rosters well in advance. This wasn't from Gilman, but my on though on how this applies to two players on the Habs... Kotkaniemi and Suzuki. The Habs are better off putting Suzuki in the OHL, where he won't accumulate a year of pro experience... and Kotkaniemi in Finland... where he won't accumulate a year of pro experience (he would in the AHL)... under the old expansion draft rules. Depending when Seattle comes in, this is the difference between protecting the players or them being exempt from the draft and giving us more protection slots.

  27. What kind of analysis is this? Our offense is defunct for multiple reasons, playmakers being the least of our concerns. What is more troublesome are how skewed we are, positionally, up front, we got Wingers trying to be Centers, Centers trying to be Wingers. We lack a legitimate 1C, probably even a 2C but lets worry about one issue at a time up there. Then we have a D core that is carried by 2 guys, both playing from the same side, also happen to be the only 2 capable of producing points on any kind of regular basis. We have no one on the Left side capable of eating minutes while driving some offense on a consistent basis for the forwards. Those are the real issues plaguing this offense, you have to be properly setup at the forward and defense position before you can even get into what style of players you need to compliment each other better and further upgrade that offense. You need a real 1C, you need a real top 6 with maybe only 1 guy out of the 6 being a bubble guy, the rest have to be hands down top 6 guys. You need at least 3 of your 6 Dmen to be very good all around players who are capable of playing big minutes, solid in their own zone, while contributing to team offense, whether on the PP or 5 on 5. We are obviously not there yet, and need to get there before we can even consider talking about how many natural goal scorers, playmakers, or net drivers we are lacking to make it better.

  31. This strategic mastermind, this managerial wizard, gave us all a look behind the gilded curtain of his overpowering visionary acumen at the presser yesterday: "The goal is to get younger, faster with character, and that’s what we’re going to try to do moving forward...We’re going young with speed and character." - Marc Bergevin These penetrating words, which so brilliantly cut through to the nub of the matter and demonstrate a far-seeing, prophetic insight into the future direction of the game well beyond that of his colleagues - most of whom are, of course, have yet to make the realization that MB has arrived at in year six of his rebuild, i.e., the pressing need for youth and speed - come from the same Napoleonic mind that brought you -Shea Weber -Karl Alzner -Jamie Benn -Dwight King -Steve Ott All players who made the team inestimably younger and faster. One can only be uplifted by this track record and the new revelation of how consistently our GM has built upon this clear and inspiring vision of the Montreal Canadiens. No doubt, given another decade, he will come to the realization that the league has legalized the forward pass! Meanwhile, here's a sneak peak at next year's edition of your Montreal Canadiens:

  33. The team needs a better center for the 4th line? I wonder if Bergevin is up to the task.... Cut to Habs' hockey ops meeting Julien - "Marc, I think it's pretty clear that acquiring a top 6 centre would really benefit the team." Bergevin - "uh huh..." *starts looking at custom suits online* *Timmins does pushups while muttering about Galchenyuk* Muller - "Or uh, maybe a puck moving defenseman who can play 25 minutes a night...?" Bergevin - "zzzzzzZZZZZZzzzzzz" *Timmins does deadlifts and sneezes, "SERgachev! Oh, excuse me." Daigneault - "a bettar 4th line center wud be gud!!!1!!" Julien and Muller - "JJ! NO!!" Bergevin snaps awake, twinkle in his eye - "Now we're talking! Scott, who did I help draft in Chicago that can play center on our 4th line?" Mellanby - "Um... Byron Froese, sir." Bergevin - "Tabernac! This is as good as we get, guys! Nothing more to do for this team!" *Muller stares at nothing. Mellanby thinks he should suit up for a tryout. Julien caresses his locket of Brad Marchand. Timmins does burpees in the corner. Daigneault writes in crayon.* fin

  34. Welcome to the new look forum. This is what has caused all the downtime on the site over the last week or so but I believe we should be good to go now. There are still some things being slowly returned via a background install (to avoid any overloads on the server) but I don't think anything of note is missing. There are some new features on here that we'll discover as we go along. As you find new ones, feel free to post them here. A few that I'm aware of: - Embedding media - For tweets in particular, all you should have to do is copy/paste the URL inside the post. It should, within a second or two, convert to the actual tweet. That's better than having to convert to HTML to post tweets like in the past. This should work for YouTube videos and other media (Instagram, Vine, etc) as well. - Replying to partial messages - If you want to reply to only a certain part of a post, you can highlight that text and then a little 'Quote this' bubble will pop up. Click it and a reply will open up with only the part that you highlighted as the quoted text. - The PM system has changed. For starters, notifications are bit more visible - when I logged on I had a notification on the bottom right on the page, just a little bubble that popped up. There are a couple of other tidbits - if you're interested, click here. I'm sure there are many more but I'm in the middle of trying to figure out where things are in an entirely new admin panel. (I did figure out how to upload a certain smiley at least...I can't find a corresponding 'sarcasm off' one though...) If any of you have any questions/comments/feedback, feel free to post those. If you see anything that doesn't look quite right, let me know as soon as possible (and if you can, send a screenshot).

  37. I'm not saying that I think Bergevin is the bee's knees, but people clamored for MT's head and to get CJ...he did. People have been complaining about DD for the past 2, maybe 3 years. He's gone. Everybody knew that Duchene and Landeskog were not getting traded until the offseason. That left Vrbata, who stayed put, and Vanek, who people didn't really seem to want anyway. Maybe holding on to that 1st when it could used for a trade in the offseason is better management than using it for a couple of months of Vrbata? Where is the mythical top 6 available player that should've been added? I'm not an Ott fan, but I do like King and appreciate the addition of Martinsen. Seeing him in person a few times, he's big and seemed fast out there. I'll appreciate those two on a bottom line instead of DD and Ghetto. Davidson and Benn make it seem like we won't see Nesterov in the lineup anymore. People seem to forget that most teams "selling" are getting assets for UFAs that would walk at the end of the year. Seriously, take a look at the forwards that were traded today. Look at the top UFA lists for 2017...most of those players are already on playoff bound teams. I know you can't please all of the people all of the time, but man, this fan base expects the moon more often than not.

  41. Flew my 7 year old boy and myself up to watch this game. I've seen a lot of great Habs games in person but it may have been my favorite of all time because of how much he enjoyed it. I even caught a stray puck during warmups that was likely off a crossbar and we didn't see coming till last second. And most importantly I didn't spill my beer!

  42. Wait... am I being traded too? Guys, come on, I'm trying hard out here, I'm just in a bit of a rough patch. Put me on a line with DON and The Chicoutimi Cucumber and I swear my posts will improve.

  43. I simply don't get how trading the best offensive players on the team for offense makes any sense. We need to add offence not make a lateral trade that gains us (maybe) an extra goal or 2. Although Mark down Mark seems good at lateral trades that accomplish shite.
