    I agree With this

The fact that JD has any say in the next GM and isn't just hanging on to his job through the deadline is why Columbus will continue to suck. The organization needs to clean house and that starts from the top. Firing Jarmo was the right start, but JD and every other decision maker needs to go at the end of the season. Nothing changes if he just keep letting the same decision makers move the deck chairs around.

To CBJ: Tanner Pearson ($3.25M/pending UFA)

To MTL: Jack Roslovic ($4.00M/pending UFA)

Habs get someone who has played center in the past

Jackets get a winger for a player that was playing the wing.

But what is the benefit to Columbus? Why trade a local kid with no future on the team who can play center when Boone inevitably gets hurt again for a pure winger with no future on the team?

Take your complaint up with @dlbalr- he's the 1 writing down to that level.  (I'm teasing because it is common practice to write at that level)

Although I agree that Grade 9 level sounds low, but it actually isn't.  The average American reads at 7-8th grade level and the UK recommends content to be at Grade 9 level and Canada isn't much different.  It is possible to graduate from high school and not read at grade 12 level.   Also, people prefer and are more comfortable reading at 2 levels below the reading level they are capable of.  For that reason the majority of popular high selling novels are written at a 7th grade level.   Another issue is if you write at a Grade 12 level over half the population wouldn't understand most of the "big" words and would have to look them up and because of that they don't bother reading it.

Well that's depressing. Though I have to admit, I'm guessing the vast majority of Star Wars novels I read are at most at a 7th grade level, so I suppose that shouldn't surprise. Although I am curious how a grammar service would just the technobabble, haha.

Cashing in on a very good 22/23 season and Ottawa's ongoing desperation for a goaltender.

He was miles better than Merzlikins, but that didn't take much. He was good down the stretch, but as good as he was early in the Edmonton series, he was that bad in the last three games. That's what he is - brilliant at times, but mostly mediocre or bad. I just don't see how he isn't a guy that just goes year-to-year being a backup somewhere.

The CBJs chose Torts over PLD and then decided to let Torts walk at the end of the season ... and IMO Dubois is doing better by Winnipeg than "your" big UFA signing did by Calgary last season ... being honest and transparent ... just like Hellebuyck and Scheifele ... PLD just gets more media coverage ... but I don't see either of us convincing the other, so to each his own.

Oh, if I were a Flames fan, I would absolutely feel the same way about Gaudreau as I do the likes of Panarin and Bobrovsky (I'm struggling to think of a comparable in Montreal, except maybe JK and his offer sheet). If PLD had ended up in Montreal, than all would have been forgiven. Habs still trump the Jackets for me.

  6. 4 hours ago, GHT120 said:

I think that is the "glass is empty" perspective on PLD ... IMO he wanted out of Columbus because of John Tortorella ... not the first player with that opinion, and CBJ was so impressed by the rest of that season that they then let JT walk when his contract expired a few months after the trade ... AND ... not certain PLD actually has asked Winnipeg for a trade ... he told them that, like their other pending UFAs, he won't re-sign next summer and the Jets are desperate to optimize their assets ... what I recall hearing from NHL related folks and "real" experts (i.e., not Internet clickbait bloggers) is that PLD is a good teammate, excellent two-way player and hard to play against ... how much he is worth on a long-term deal or in a grade is a separate debate.

Well, that fits because I'm a glass half empty person. And I'm a Jackets fan, so that first strike is a big one for me. If he had played out his time in Winnipeg and just gone his merry way at the trade deadline as a rental, that's fine. But so openly wanting out of a second team in two years... it's hard to think anything would be different in two years anywhere else.

At this point I am over Dubois.  Too much BS already.

I also think I Suzuki is the leader I want and the future at first line center. Dubois will disrupt this as well as the internal cap, he will hog the media attention and become a distraction to what is becoming a tight knit, lead-by-example, trust-the-process type of team.  I believe that is more important than any individual accolades.

That's the whole problem with Dubois - his attitude. He is a me first player. He wants to be treated and paid like a first line center on a good team and that just isn't what he is. He is 25 years old with a 63 point career best season and has twice given up on being part of a team. If someone wants to pay him like a #1, let them. If the Kings aren't willing to commit to him as such and no other team does either, then maybe it humbled him and he's someone to work with as a good #2 at a reasonable price.

I understand that once a player leaves, hes gone from fandom.  Im just asking why you think he's a turncoat?  Why is he a traitor when he never asked to leave the team?

I just reserve the term turncoat for someone who actually turns their back on an organization. Like Id understand if someone said that about Dany Heatley asking to be traded from Ottawa, or Pronger in Edmonton.  I just want to know what PK did to be considered a traitor?

Agreed. Turncoats are guys like Adam Foote who claimed to be willing to resign in Columbus, but on trade deadline day had a private jet waiting to take him to Denver to sign for less than what Columbus had offered.

Will they?  I think it's way too early to make any definitive predictions.  They haven't played well lately and one line can only carry a team so far, especially now with the goaltending starting to struggle.  Are they a last place team?  Probably not at this point but I don't think they're going to just come up short of a Wild Card spot either which is how you get a pick in the mid-teens.

Montreal and Columbus seem to have switched places. Heading into last season, the Jackets were expected to be in contention for the top pick and Montreal was hoping Price would be back early enough to get them in wild card contention. Instead, Montreal went off the rails immediately and never got back on, while Columbus surprised and while they were never truly in playoff contention, they scored enough goals to give people a sliver of hope through mid-season, before ultimately finishing in the top half of the non-playoff teams.

This year, Montreal was expecting more of last year, while Columbus thought that Johnny Gaudreau would put them into the playoff hunt. Instead, Columbus went off the rails immediately and it is Montreal scoring goals left and right, giving that slight hope of sneaking into the playoffs.  The most likely scenario in my mind is that Montreal does exactly what Columbus did last year and finishes in the top half of the non-playoff teams.

My son likes the Mighty Ducks Gamechanges series on Disney. Maybe we should follow suit of one of the teams on that show, and make everyone play with their off hand, too.

How great was the Bash Brothers cameo? And how disappointing was it that Charlie Conway wasn't the secret contact inside the Ducks front office?

A good line from Calgary's GM on how the conditions came about:

“We’re trying to give up the worst pick we can and they’re trying to get the best pick they can. So there’s just a ton of profanity back and forth and then you keep putting in different layers. So that sort of sums it up."

Brad Treliving is the man! Chill forever!

Again, I'm not saying the rules make sense.  I'm just providing the NCAA explanation for the rule.

There were a few kids about 10 years ago (I think was 2009-10 or 2013-14) who attended their team's rookie camps and then went to school cause the rookie camp was earlier than usual due to it being an olympic year, and their particular school started later than usual.  They were allowed to attend cause the school wasn't in session, but other players whose school was in session were not allowed to attend by the NCAA.

Oh, I know. I'm not trying to contradict or anything. I'm really just highlighting the wishy-washy-ness of the NCAA, an organization who for a time allowed schools to provide bagels to student atheletes, but only if they didn't also provide cream cheese.

Secondly, the NCAA is still an educational institution.  Players need to be in school when school is running.  If the school is having classes, the players need to be there and not at an NHL training camp.  They could lose academic eligibility to play.  This works in Summer Camps cause most schools aren't running, but by mid-September when Rookie Camp starts, and then training camp going into October, we are talking about a lot of missed classes which isn't allowed.

Athletes get super special treatment. A lot of them were already doing all their classes online to maximize training time even before COVID. And as the NCAA is now dissolving into two mega-conferences that are going to range from coast to coast, we're going to start seeing schools setting up home bases thousands of miles away from campus so athletes can have a central location to live during long road trips and attend classes remotely. In other words, there are reasons why college athletes can't attend camp, but missing classes is at the bottom of that list.

At some point NCAA will likely need to change their rules. I think there is a lot of pressure on them as the universities make money hand over fist on sports and the student athletes get more or less nothing.

Well, the big schools make a lot of money off of football and basketball. Must sports at most schools are just trying to scrap by. Student athletes also get a lot. Tuition, room and board, elite trainers and facilities, top notch health care, etc. That's probably six figures a lot of places, plus now athletes can make money off of their name, image, and likeness while still in school. Sure, it kind of crazy how the top football/basketball players are making pennies compared to what their programs bring in, but that is not true for most sports at most schools.

All that being said, it seems like the NHL could simply allow teams to invite players to training camp without having to sign and pay them. Like in golf, amateurs can still play professional events and simply not take their winnings.

Currently the Habs show as $1.9M and change under the ceiling ... since I don't expect them to make any significant additions Hughes may well be able to avoid LTIR this season, especially if he manages to move another veteran out ... that would allow them to accumulate cap space to use at the deadline (retaining salary  on an outgoing player and/or maybe even being the "third team" in a deadline deal).

Keep in mind they have Drouin listed on LTIR, so adding him to the roster puts them well over, with 3 roster spots still to fill. Of course, if Price is done, then they are in the clear easily.
