Agreed. It's unfortunate but Winnipeg just doesn't have the economic base that other Canadian cities have. It's not cheap to buy season tickets for an NHL team so you need that big corporate base to support it. Winnipeg has great fans and an excellent team but it seems it will always be a struggle to support it.

13,000 average attendance is not just a question of the size of the city. London gets more than 9,000 to their OHL games!

Canadiens claim Colin White from Pittsburgh; place Brandon Gignac on waivers  | Montréal Canadiens (nhl.com)

Seems like a bit of an odd minor move to me, but what do I know. I guess they feel the need for a little more veteran FW experience in the organization.

I think they expect Gignac to clear thanks to the two-year contract (with $150K minimum) that he signed.

Barry, err, Colin White is a centre as well so I assume they need Gignac in Laval and thus White will fill in.

What kind of miracle do we need for the stupid Sens to pass the Habs in the standings?  Same with Arizona - wth have they been doing to have 10 straight losses?

Sens now three points behind but three games in hand. Maybe they could win one or two?

Clearly these two teams are our nemeses for the draft positions.

Hey, I recognize that we have nothing to play for (apart from seeing young guys improve), and I recognize that the higher pick is the better pick. But I still don’t cheer for them to lose, when I’m watching games. “Frustration” is a bit of a strong word for it…but I feel a lot less motivated to watch under these conditions for sure. At least this game was pretty entertaining.

Couldn't watch tonight, but an entertaining close game seems all right, especially with Roy and Xhekaj playing well. Sabres now two points clear of the Habs which is not a bad thing.

Wins will come more often next year.

MSL does not know yet how to coach veterans to get their best. I think Anderson is another victim of the learning path the coach is progressing on.

Which veterans (besides Anderson) do you think have suffered from St-Louis coaching? I think Monahan, Matheson, Armia, Kovacevic have all benefited, I think. Savard seems no worse. Gallagher and Pearson?

At the start of the year, I dint think it made sense to send Anderson down - we had to hope that he turned things around and increased his trade value. At this point I think we should send him down. At least at the start of the year, it looked like he was trying SOMETIMES, now it looks like he is just collecting his pay check, but isn’t even trying to earn it!

Maybe there is a GM out there that thinks he can make Anderson productive. And if there is, maybe we could take back a smaller bad contract ... OK, it's really stretch, I know.

In the meantime, fourth-line minutes would be appropriate. Give the ice time to younger players who need it. (The sad thing is that Anderson is only 29, a year younger than Armia and only two years older than Evans.)

I don’t think Allen gets sent to Laval in any scenario but would waiving him be a bad PR move if the intention is to offer him to other teams for free?

I think it would be easier to move him if the Habs retain 50% and collect some modest draft pick in trade.

  9. Nothing is for certain--not even Suzuki and Caufield, one never knows--but I think Dach has shown enough that I'm comfortable that he has the potential to be a key contributor. Now, we still need to realize the potential, but it's certainly far closer than that of a potential top-ten draft pick in this year's draft.

Hmmm, i dunno if put much stock into 'pedigree' being a plus?

But, having a millionaire former NHLer father likely cant hurt opportunity for development though.

Good genes are real, but those, like the development/training, are already baked into what that prospect is today, it's unlikely that anyone's genes ("pedigree") will result in a huge improvement (relative to other prospects) after the draft.

The flip side to that is IF he develops a solid defensive game, he makes a great 3rd line player.  A more offensive version of Lehkonen that can play higher in the lineup if needed, but is a solid 3rd liner.  Which is a great idea, but defense is arguably the hardest thing to teach effectively.

As I recall, he was on the PK while Armia was in Laval, and was not terrible (in spite of this being a new role for him) but I don't think he's seen any PK time since Armia returned.

I’m sympathetic to the idea that there is more there, but we should remember: he is currently playing on one of the worst FW units and one of the worst teams in the league. If he can’t make himself an important cog in that environment, is he really going to do better on a team that actually has quality depth at the FW position?

Some players are able to make good players better--they are essentially complementary to good players--but cannot drive or enable a weaker line to become a strong one on their own. I would say Hoffman might have been in the complementary category, he could help the scoring on a top line but couldn't do much at all on the bottom six. On the other hand, Monahan could make almost any line better. Somebody else probably has better examples. 😊
