Carolina took one look at this guy, who also has a public video of himself doing cocaine, and said... yup that's better than KK

So ... that's how the 1% live (and play) ...

I thought the game was quite even for two periods before Carolina woke up in the third and really put the hammer down.

Agree on the first line though, they've been out of sorts for a few games now.  It was bound to happen after the hot stretch they had.

    Agree on both points.

The second line has been very good on this road trip, though. Roy-Dach-Newhook might have some potential yet.

Dont get too excited, Primeau had similar NCAA numbers and we all know goalies are an odd bunch. I still remember Craig Button going all GaGa over Zach Fucale; who played all of 4 NHL games.

Definitely voodoo. And no one expected Lindgren to play 90+ games in the NHL, either.

That said, having Fowler ranked third is still encouraging. Hopefully this time the voodoo is on our side.

  4. Scott Wheeler of the Athletic ranked Fowler as third-best goalie prospect in the NHL, behind only Wallstedt and Askarov (and ahead of Knight and Levi).

Fowler has established himself as one of the top goalie prospects in the sport with his play over the last three seasons. That started when he was named to the USHL’s All-Rookie Second Team two years ago and its First All-Star Team last year after leading the league in both save percentage and goals-against average. It has been stamped this year with a stellar freshman year at BC that has seen him play virtually every minute behind arguably the best team in the country (and while the team in front of him helps, their strength is most pronounced at forward and he has stolen some games). (I should note that I’ve seen him look just OK with Team USA both in Gothenburg at the world juniors and Plymouth at the World Junior Summer Showcase, but he was also excellent at the World Jr. A Challenge.)

He’s the kind of goalie who if he can see a shot and move to it, he’s going to stop it.

He’s got work to do on some other things (conditioning/fitness, less business on scrambles, losing his posts at times) but he worked hard to cut some weight last summer, seems committed to staying in better shape, and has so many clear tools, highlighted by good hands, an ability to take space away through square angles and sound positioning, great tracking/reads, legitimate power/movement and a knack for making huge pad saves/stopping high-danger chances. He’s got a legitimate shot not just to be an NHL goaltender but to be a very good one, and there aren’t many goalies his age (or even a little older) I’m comfortable saying that about.

  5. I think this is wishful thinking on the Carolina fans' part, not to mention that the writer doesn't understand how salary retention works.

A player that has time to fill out and hone his skill, the former 2018 draft choice has tons of potential. For this reason, his value is still fairly high around the NHL. The contract is not ideal currently but it is seen as a "steal" if he finds his true potential down the line. For this season, the Canes may need to take on some of his contracts for the remainder of this season to trade him.

Hard to see anyone taking on six years of salary retention. And a reclamation project at $5M/year for six more years? I don't think there would be many GMs that would risk that. Maybe Carolina will buy him out at $800K/year for 12 years?

That is still a 20+ point jump ... I expect them to be in the wildcard chase next season but not close enough to make the eventual playoff teams too nervous.

Maybe 15, maybe 25. This one's not finished yet so don't know how much of a jump will be needed to get into the 95-point range. But, regardless of where they finish, like PMK, I do expect to see a step forward in results--not only in individual performances by the young players--next year.

Armia at 50% retention has some value but unless you can get something pretty good then I would prefer to use the retention spot elsewhere.

I suspect Armia will play out his contract with the Habs. As you say, not enough to get anything significant back, and yet his contract is not crippling the team. And his next contract (with whoever he signs with) will be considerably more modest.

Armia might be worth something at the deadline next year and hopefully Anderson can get back to being a 20 goal scorer.

Armia has some value but not $3.5M, that was wishful thinking by Bergevin. Anderson is a much more difficult problem.

What I said was that it reflected the fiscal situation of the franchise.

DIDN'T say they are either not viable, or moving, but neither are they a financial success.

Not directly the fiscal situation (ie how is the cash flow of the team, or the balance sheet). It's just an estimate of what someone might be willing to pay for the team. It's more to do with the financial potential of the team rather than the current state--and the prestige level of owning said team. That prestige will entice billionaires to buy, but a team in Winnipeg will generally be less desirable than one in Toronto, NYC or LA, for example. Whether they sell 2000 more season tickets or not really won't make much of a difference in that perceived value.

Which is why I really wouldn't use the estimated franchise value as a proxy for the team's financial performance, any more than I would use the estimated brand value to judge whether TikTok does better financially than BMW.

It may somewhat offset, but the Jets' franchise value is 5th lowest in the NHL ... they are not in a fiscally strong situation.

Franchise value doesn't directly affect the team, that's like the stock price. It's the perceived value of the team, but having a higher (estimated!) value doesn't bring any additional revenue to the team. And while 5th-lowest is not high on the NHL scale, it does not necessarily mean that it's not a viable team. We really don't have enough data to determine that.

In the long-term, even filling their building may not be enough ... it has the lowest capacity in the NHL (ignoring the joke in Arizona obviously) ... especially as "regular fans" can't pay the premium "corporate" prices that most teams depend upon, and the corporate market is likely the weakest in the NHL.

Maybe yes. But tickets are far from the only income source. I expect the TV contract will bring the Jets much more revenue than Arizona, Anaheim or Caroline etc will get. Merchandising is another facet, don't know how well that works for the Jets. But, for sure, ticket revenue is not the only determining factor.
