I think most would say that Hughes has elite skating ability which allows him to make up for any other deficiencies he might have. Hutson's skating is not quite the same level. I think you could say the same kind of player in that their offensive game dominates. Hutson needs to get stronger and he certainly could.

He might even be able to improve his skating. (Armia, for example, has trained multiple summers with an olympic speed skater, and it has improved his speed. Kotkaniemi, on the other hand, pooh-poohed that idea ...)

wth is that ?   % of what ?

Sorry, I snipped a bit too much. that's xGF% (expected goals for percentage).

xGF% does depend on the opposition so Suzuki's number should not be directly compared to White's, for example, but, as a team, the Habs are all clustered far lower than they would be after most games.

Who is calling Armia a 2nd line winger.  I don't anyone thinks he is one.

He's playing on the second line by default, but I don't think anyone, here or media wise, thinks he's a top-6 player long term.

Third line is probably the most appropriate place for him, with the ability to move temporarily up to second in case of injuries (like now). At $3.4M overpaid for that role, but with a more modest contract he would still be a credible middle-six winger, I think.

It’s easier said than done to get a guy like Panarin to sign. When he went to the Rangers wasn’t his choice either NY or Florida, but he really wanted to go to the Rangers. Can’t see us having that kind of advantage where a big name UFA is available AND we are his first choice.

Yes, media and fan pressure. And, yes, relatively high taxes (though Quebec's income tax rate really isn't much different from that of NYC).

But also a young team on the rise. A city that loves hockey. A hall-of-fame coach. An unmatched heritage. A respected GM that treats players well. A safe city to bring up a family in.

Really, it's not all negative. What the final score will be is heavily dependent on the player's priorities.

Armia has never successfully been a top-6 forward. He does great on a third line and that is where I would look to up Armia’s value.

Have you not noticed our second line's (Roy, Newhook and--yes--Armia) play recently? It's the best it has been since the Dach injury, and the coaching staff has been rewarding it with more ice time, too.

well, I am still hoping Roy wins that spot. Anderson is signed until 2027. Dach and Newhook play a fast aggressive game, from all the other options on wing, Anderson is there by default unless Roy is fully healed and wins that spot.

Based on how he has been playing, and his recent line assignments, I really don't thing Anderson is any kind of lock for the second line. Either Roy or Armia would be ahead of him already, maybe even RHP.

Anderson played 12:41 against the Oilers, much less than Armia (18:40) or Newhook (17:40). Even Gallagher got more ice time than Anderson.

    Caufield - Suzuki - Slafkovsky

    _________ - Dach - Newhook

    Roy - Dvorak - Anderson

    Armia - Evans - Gallagher

Would be ideal for lines 2-4 next year.

Oof ... that's a definite downgrade for Roy. And Armia, too, although he might be able to work with Evans (whom he plays with on PK anyway) and Gallagher.

But with Gallagher and Anderson on the roster, "ideal" may not be possible anyway.

This is a tough one. I think it's great that he's showing his versatility by playing pretty good on the right side, but I would prefer that he play his strong side more while he's developing.

I expect he'll be back on the right side in the longer term, maybe even next year, but I think Hughes and St-Louis want him to have the flexibility to play on the right when it's needed due to injuries or otherwise.

I doubt HughGort trades Barron, like Smyalic and Heineman, these are the guys he traded for. I think they will be patient with these guys.

I feel pretty confident that Hughes will make the right trades and not get unduly attached to players even if he picked or traded for them himself. If you can make the team better by trading, you do it, even if you are sending out a player that you like.

As a 3rd pairing RD, I have no problem with Barron.

He can buy time for Bogdan to adapt to North-American hockey

If Hughes is confident about Konyushkov he might yet trade Barron, who would likely bring a greater return than Kovacevic.

This org stills needs top-pairing-quality young D. Even Guhle has not clearly established himself as being at that level. So, although he wasn't a sexy pick, this kid is an important piece. Here's hoping he makes the jump to Laval and flourishes.

Quite right. No one has yet confirmed that he can be a top-pairing D. Guhle has that potential, and arguably Reinbacher and Hutson do, too, but it'll take some time before we know whether any of them can play at that level. Others (such as Engstrom, Mailloux, Barron and Xhekaj) are more likely to have second-pairing ceilings, but they aren't proven yet, either.

Overall, I am very optimistic about our D prospects but they are still very, very young on the typical D development timescale.

Granted, I was pretty young when the Nordiques moved (though at least alive at that time unlike Pelletier) but I don't think too many logical-thinking people could think the Habs unilaterally had the ability to make a team move.  That's pretty naive on his end.

Maybe he was referring to the Nordiques being kicked out of the playoffs in the Good Friday Massacre? :)

The Newhook, Roy, Armia line has been quite good lately. Barring a big trade, the line of Dach, Roy, Newhook next season is going put up numbers.

Agree on Roy. Next year, let's wait and see what trades Hughes pulls off in the summer. Roy-Dach-Newhook could indeed be great but let's see how many centres we have on the roster.

It would be great if the Habs could pickup someone on waivers so that Roy can be sent back.

It would suck for the kid, he has earned his NHL minutes, but it would help the most the prospects being developed in LVL and it would not hurt Roy’s in the long run.

I can't see them taking on another contract right now. Especially as Laval's playoff chances are marginal at best.
