Interesting reference re: Panarin. This management team clearly has an eye on the Big Move that will kick-start the rebuild to the next level - it’s a question of timing. It might or might not be this summer,  but I would not at all be surprised if we do see some really major move(s) before October.

It’s easier said than done to get a guy like Panarin to sign. When he went to the Rangers wasn’t his choice either NY or Florida, but he really wanted to go to the Rangers. Can’t see us having that kind of advantage where a big name UFA is available AND we are his first choice.

This isn't a bad college free agent class but a lot of players profile as just depth guys as usual.  There's a young defenceman that intrigues me but I think he stays in college.  Collin Graf is one of the top forwards of the group but he's a bottom-six profile.  I'm not against free assets but I'm a bit surprised they're trying to do much in there unless it's of the ATO (for Laval) variety.  The players they're likely to let go by not having contract slots for them I think might be better than a lot of the college free agents out there.

Who knows though. He could be looking at college forwards drafted by other teams, that they move for one of our young D.

Anderson and Dvorak cannot play together. They tend to go to the same spots on the ice and run into each other; and none of them were able to adjust their game despite all the effort from the coaching staff.

I much rather see Anderson with Dach and Newhook unless Roy wins that spot squarely next season.

Anderson cannot play with anyone. I pretty sure the scouting report from his kindergarten report card said “does not play well with others”.  I think we create a Bergevin cap hell or cap anchor line with Anderson-Dvorak-Gallagher, rather than kill any offensive potential that Evans may have - because he is a guy who works hard and does actually create offense.

i think Roy will eventually be a 2nd line player.  However, considering that we have little depth on the third line, and that he will be a rookie still, and only in his second year of pro hockey, I think starting him on the third line is a better idea.

I still think we need to go out and get another elite gamebreaker for the 2nd line this summer.

Also I think that Gallagher and Anderson together on the third line just doesn't work.  Neither of them pass the puck enough.

    Caufield - Suzuki - Slafkovsky

    _________ - Dach - Newhook

    Roy - Dvorak - Anderson

    Armia - Evans - Gallagher

    Extras: RHP and Pezzetta

Would be ideal for lines 2-4 next year.

Now Dvorak is a placeholder to allow Beck to stay one more year in the minors. or if you can trade Dvorak and get someone else great, but right now I don't think you are going to be able to trade him, so that's likely his spot.  Same with Anderson/Gallagher.  They aren't going to be traded so you have to find them slots.

I’d rather waste Anderson Gallagher with Dvorak and have Roy and Armia with Evans.

We can calm the A-D-G the Bergevin cap anchor line!

Canadiens Nick Suzuki leads the Eastern Conference with 12 even-strength goals since the All-Star break

I'm curious at what point Suzuki tops out? Is he a 90 point centre? A 100 point centre?

The kid improves continuously and damn I can’t wait to see what a full season of Suzuki, Slafkovsky, Caufield can do. A bonus would be having a dangerous second line to draw some coverage.

Habs are young and players are improving and there are very good young players that will be added over the next three years as well.

Exciting times are upon us 🎉

A healthy Dach and this team is a wildcard next season. Adding another top 6 winger would be a bonus.

I was hoping Roy to continue to show if he can be a viable 2nd line option with Dach. But looks like he is gone as for the year as well😳

9th in OHL scoring, pretty impressive.

And this big kid would look good in a Hab jersey, but another LH-d seems very unlikely.

    image.png

If we don’t win the lottery and can pick Celebrini, my top two choices are Demidov and Parekh. From the guys that have decent size, from an elite skill perspective, they look to be the best options and both look like the type of players that can take over a game and win it on their own.

Habs played better than the score suggests. Suzuki line was dominant again.

Habs had poor team defence at times in their own zone but Calgary was sloppy too.

I think @hab29RETIRED is at this game. Sorry bud that the Habs lost while you were there. The last time I saw the Habs live they lost 4-0 to the Capitals.

It was a painful night. First ever game live for my son. Stupid flames had an 80’s theme night where they had old players and kept showing highlights during the intermission of their one and only 89’ cup win.

anyways, it was close until the second period, than the flames pulled ahead, habs battled back and than idiotic refereeing put it way.

some thoughts at seeing most of the young players live for the first time and being able to just follow them:

-top line is going to be something special, but they have to stop trying to setup the perfect pass all the time and shoot more.

-Slafkovsky is a big dude and I’m hoping he can be a Leclair type force - but I think he can also become a much more skilled player that generates more offence on his own than Leclair did.

-Caufield’s shot is still off. I know he scored of a deaflybshot tonight. But his One timer isn’t there. Too many times tonight, he just didn’t have enough zip on his shot. Hopefully he is fully recovered by next training camp.

-Harris just isn’t physical enough and doesn’t bring the offence you’d want from a non-physical dman. May be a bad night, but was really disappointed in him and how easily he was pushed around.

-Suzuki can really slow down the game. There were times the Habs were running around like chickens with their heads off, and Suzuki got the puck ragged it around until everyone settled down. He will score 80+ points next year.

-as with the top line, this team needs to shoot more - way too many cute passes and too many cross ice pass attempts - particularly too Caufield. Can’t keep doing that when you have to make those passes through traffic.

-Evans effort level surprised me. He is an also a very good stick handler. He’s also being wasted between the two Bergevin two worst remaining long term deals. Anderson and Gallagher are useless. Garbage play by both. Anderson hit a post, but otherwise was useless. Can we just buy them out this year??? I know it’s going to cost a lot, but may as well get them out of the lineup and reduce their cap hit two years from now, when we hope to be competitive.
-Roy is a smart player. Hoped to se more offensively. But you could see the high hockey IQ Jennie was on the ice - with and  without the puck.

-we need someone from the young D to step up. Wasn’t really impressed by anyone tonight. Was hoping to see more and better from Guhle, wifi and Struble, and like I said earlier, was surprised how disappointed I was in Harris.. And the young D also need to start shooting more. Savard was shooting, but the young guys during the first half were just not getting the puck on the net hen there was traffic in front. I wish this game was a few w escalate and maybe I could have seen Hutson live.

-Premieau flops around and is out of position. A LOT!! He.needs to work on his positioning and not take himself out of the play as much.

anyways, this was really the only game I wanted them to win for the rest of the years hopefully they lose the rest, but the young guys get a ton of points.

Yeah I didn’t watch it either but Primeau must be over the moon. 40 something shot shutout, including a highlight reel save.

Watching Slafkovsky’s PP goal has me thinking about how dangerous our PP is going to be. Caufield’s deadly shot on the right, Slafkovsky’s deadly one timer on the left side. Tough to cover both sides.

I think a big difference than earlier this year, is that Matheson is finally passing to Slafkovsky. Before he would be defaulting to Caufield and Suzuki, and seemed to be avoiding Slafkovsky.

  9. 2 hours ago, DON said:

Or a top pairing offensive d-man would work. Given Reinbacher/Guhle unlikely to be scoring a bunch.

A Matheson replacement like; Dickenson or Parakh, if Dadinov & Catton are gone, would be fine by me.

If we don’t get Celebrini, I think my two two choices regardless of where we draft are Dadinov and Parakh. Both look like players that can totally take over a game. That’s something we lacked outside of the goal position since Lafleur.

Incidentally, I will be in the lower bowl with my son wearing my Lafleur jersey at the Montreal-Calgary game on Saterday😁. It’s been a long time since I’ve been to a Montreal game!

I'm not hoping for that ... all I want for him and Dvo is to have full, normal summers to prepare for training camp.

100% agree. Why the hell would we want to take a chance at him coming back right now!! Dvorak - who cares. Hopefully we can dump him in the offseason anyways - although I won’t hold my breath waiting for it to happen.

They can both come when their seasons end.  Reinbacher's fate is tied to whether his team needs to play in a relegation series.  If not, I think it could be late this week.  If they do, closer to the end of the month.  Hutson's will be dependent on when his team finishes in the Frozen Four tournament.  It starts March 28th and ends April 13th.

Reinbacher can (and almost certainly will) be loaned to Laval.  If Hutson signs a contract that begins next season, he can also go to Laval.  If he signs and burns the first year now, he won't be able to go to the Rocket, similar to Farrell last season.

Two others to watch for prospect-wise to come over somewhat soon are Adam Engstrom and Oliver Kapanen, players who I expect will sign ELC's for next season.  Their regular seasons end soon (SHL on Monday, Liiga on Tuesday) so it'll be dependent on their playoffs as well.

    Thanks!

He is the fourth NCAA defenceman since 2005-06 to have multiple 40-point seasons.  Of the four, he's the only one to do it in his first two seasons.

When is the earliest Hutson and Reinbacher can come over? Can either also be loaned to Laval?

Suzuki has improved every year and Suzuki improves despite not having quality wingers.

2024/2025 will be the first season that Suzuki has two legitimate wingers in Caufield and Slafkovsky for an entire season. Unless Marty insists on destroying that line with Anderson again.

Suzuki is going to hit 80 something points this season and that is with playing with Anderson for too many games.

We may also need one of Caufield/Slafkovsky to play with Dach.

    Great explanation Hab29.

I would say then alongside with points, Suzuki brings a stronger all around game but I agree that Suzuki isn’t a game breaker in the same way Pettersson is.

Let’s revisit this conversation in a couple more years. Suzuki continues to grow every season, including this one so we haven’t seen his ceiling yet.  I imagine a full season with Slafkovsky taking a step and Caufield rebounding with a perfect shoulder and a competent PP unit…Let’s see what Suzuki has got left in him.

Well, I did pick Suzuki to get 87 points in our annual prediction contest, so I’m high on him. Having said that, I still think that if he can stay healthy and find consistency, Dach may become our #1 centre. It would really be something to have to 85 point+ centres.

  17. 12 minutes ago, DON said:

With so many good looking d-prospects, some teams will bite on a couple early, so Habs might do fine at 6th or 7th pick for a forward.

Maybe a Demidov, Catton or Helenius might be fine forward options.

My order of preference is as follows:

    1)Celebrini

    2)Demidov

    3)Lindstrom

    4)Parekh

    5)Silayev

We aren’t getting the top three unless we win the draft. And we we are picking late for Levshhnov. Is take BPA, rather than position and Paekh looks like a Coffey or dman that will be real special. Man already screwed the pooch not taking Hughes (or at least Tkachuk), wouldn’t want to pass on Parekh if he is available.

This is a D heavy draft, and last year was a forward heavy draft. I really wished we had taken Michkov or Leonard last year!

Dickinson is very impressive, there seems to be no weak point in his game. He really stood out watching some of the OHL playoff games last year and he keeps getting better. I think he has top pairing defensemen written all over him. I think he is similar in style to Kaiden Guhle, but a little bigger frame and stronger and will provide more offense.

Zayne Parekh is certainly an offensive dynamo, no other defensemen in this draft like him but Dickinson seems so well rounded.

Sam Dickinson | Sam Dickinson Profile | Sam Dickinson Scouting Report 2024 (mynhldraft.com)

If we don’t get lottery luck to get that three top forwards, I want Parekh.

I am certainly no Petersson (damned autocorrect) expert. I was just looking at the point stats and Pettersson looks like a 100 point guy and is on pace for about the same this year.

Maybe Pettersson is a 120 point guy I don’t know. But if he is 100 point guy and Suzuki tops out at 90 next season then is that 10 points really that much more?

IMO it’s not the point difference as much as an ability to take over a game.

There were some season in the 80’s, Bernie Federko had more points than Trottier, but who would you rather have? Bossy typically only had 10-15 more points than Federko. But he was much more of a game breaker than Federko ever was. There’s a difference between a guy who will get his points and a guy who can win it on his own. Pattersson is among the latter.

I don’t know what “geiggon” means, but I agree with that ranking (McDavid > Pettersson > Suzuki) and that overall assessment.

Hard to believe that we once had Koivu, Turgeon, and Damphousse down the middle and managed to trade away the latter two on discounts, without having adequate replacements in mind. Good ol’ Reggie 🙄

    Apple “auto-correct” for friggin.

Reggie was put in a job that was over his head. That decision was Corey. Tremblay though is the ass wipe who chased Roy and Turgeon out of town. If it was up to me, Neither of those two, or MB/MT should be allowed in the bell centre.

four guys who out their egos above the team.

  21. 12 minutes ago, Prime Minister Koivu said:

I agree with the spirit of your post but I wonder just how much better is Petterson ?

If Petersson is pegged as a 100 point guy and Suzuki hits 90 points, is that really that big of a difference?

Let’s see what Suzuki can do with an entire season having two good wingers and a decent PP unit.

Patterson is a guy that can take over a game. I’d say his a notch below McDavid and McKinnon. It say Suzuki is two below Pattersson. Nothing wrong with that though - Suzuk is the best centre we’ve had since Koivu. If Dach can be the 1a or 1b with Suzuki we should be good at centre with Beck hopefully as a solid #3. That’s the best we’ve been at the position since the unholy trio of Corey-Tremblay-Houle turned us into the geiggon Harrold Ballard leafs.

  22. 6 minutes ago, The Chicoutimi Cucumber said:

Even so, I don’t think they’re getting that for Savard. Adjust all those scenarios downward to a 2nd-rounder and I think it’s more plausible.

Savard’s stock seems to be lower than it should be, given how much GMs like blood-and-guts veterans for the playoffs. I wonder if that’s because the Habs have priced him out of the market.

Given what Calgary got for Taney, I don’t see us getting a first.
