That is an interesting though that I have also wondered.  Stamkos did play with Marty for 6 years.

I also wonder about Kane too due to the Wings missing the playoffs where will he go next year?   Kane went with the Wings because he likes original 6 teams and he is friends with DeBrincat.  The Habs are an original 6 team and Kane is also friends with Dach.

    Marchessault is another interesting possibility.

People ask why would any of them want to come to Montreal?  Because them signing with the Habs would basically end the rebuild.

I dont end the rebuild with a 35 year old in stamkos or Kane.  That doesnt make a lot of sense.  I think you need someone who will be at least close to the age of your core and grow with them.

Ending the rebuild isnt signing a 35 year old to a one year deal to try and win now and see them retire in a year or two.  The goal.of the rebuild is to build a team that will be competitive for a longer window than they have left.

Trade Cary Price's contract, one of the defense in the logjam, and maybe a draft pick to Utah for future considerations and use the new found cap room to get Jake Guentzal.

I also wonder if the St Louis/Lecavalier factor to get Stamkos to come to Montreal for the right price if Tampa doesn't work out something.

Utah is not going to be run the same way phoenix was, talking everyones bad contracts.  That ends with the new ownership who are going to spend on actual players

For me the key is Dach. It's a shame he got hurt so early in the year. It robbed us of the opportunity to see if he is a long term solution at center. If Dach can stay healthy (hardly a certainty) then we could be set at center.  It would have been nice going into the draft this year with a little more certainty about Dach but that's the way it goes.

Exactly.  I like Dach but to say there is no room for a top 6 centre... hogwash.

Imagine we win the lottery? Are we passing on Celebrini cause he's a centre?

Kidney, Mesar, Beck, Kapanen are all maybes... and the fact is Beck and Kapanen are most likely to make it but are also unlikely to be top six centres.

And its not Newhook can play wing.  Its hes better at wing than at centre.  There is a difference.

So all of this means, if you think our top 6 centre spots are set... that means you are counting on both Suzuki and Dach to be in those spots.  And if you add one more and those two are healthy and productive, great... you can have the equivalent of the Oilers having RNH, or you can put one on wing.  You cant have too many good centers.  No such thing.

  4. Anaheim is stocked on LD.

Im also not sure Mtl is done at C.

Consider that Newhook is probably better on the wing and while we all hope Dach will come back and take the next step hes missed like 2.5 seasons out of his last 4.  It wouldnt be wise to put all the eggs in that basket.

    Zegras also can play wing.

Im not crazy about giving a lot for him and Ive said why, but I dont think we are so stocked at C to look away from that.

I agree that Kovacevic is not worth a lot, but a lot of young defensemen have been sent to the AHL and have turned out OK.  I think Xhekaj was sent to the AHL this year to work on things and I am pretty darn sure he has a lot of value. Getting sent to the AHL is certainly not a kiss of death for a young defensemen.

Didnt say its the kiss of death but its the third season in a row hes been sent there to work on his defensive game.  Does that mean he can never have an NHL career? Of course not.  But it certainly has to mean his trade value is not the greatest.

Anaheim has a ton of prospects in their system and a lot of draft picks, they arent going for quantity over quality right now.

Perhaps that's what they ask for, you can't blame them for asking for more. Just saying that if it gets to the point where they want our first (especially this year) or Reinbacher then you let some other team take him.

Trevor Zegras certainly has talent but not sure what his ceiling. Is he a 60-70 point guy who plays one end of the ice or will he be a 80-90 point guy who plays a 200 foot game?  I don't know.

I wouldnt do it either... but my point is that a pick in the 20s, a 22 year old dman who got sent to the AHL due to being a liability and a 26 year old D who is third pairing, isnt gonna get that much.

Perhaps but don't forget that  Anaheim's best young D (Mintyukov, Zelleweger) are  LD. Barron certainly may have some value after trading Drysdale and he did score 7 goals in 48 games with the Habs. They are weak on the right side as they picked up Lindstrom from Montreal on waivers.  Barron and Kovacevic might solidify their right side, plus the 1st round pick has some value.

Anaheim is loaded up the middle after trading for Cutter Gauthier. I think they trade Zegras somewhere. Is that offer enough? If it isn't it isn't that far off.

I like the trade from Montreal's point of view. It makes it easy to draft a stud defensemen at #5 if that is the best player available. If a top forward falls to 5 then that is great to.

It may be a crazy proposal and is a classic quantity for quality trade that I like from Montreal's point of view but there are also enough pieces for Anaheim to make them think about it. I am not sure how much more they get for Zegras.

Anaheim thinks about this for two seconds and says  make it your first rounder or David Reinbacher as the RHD and then we can talk.

I am sad for the kids, they deserved to continue playing.

I have posted it a few times over the season, I feel the Habs organization should have helped Laval better to allow them to compete in the playoffs.

You were wrong every time you posted it... ignoring issues like the 50 contract limit, or the idea that they should trade picks for 26-28 year old journeymen (even with an AHL limit on how many vets they could carry) and other issues that were all explained to you at the time but double down on it now.

An AHL winning team is not necessarily the same as a team that is developping kids for the NHL.  Getting vets who take ice time away from kids isnt the way. That said, ideally you do both, but the development always has to be the priority, especially for a team rebuilding like Montreal.

As always, with soooooo mnay players, the question is whether the #s will translate to the NHL.

After watching his junior career I was so pumped when the habs got Corey Locke in the 4th round of the 2003 after his CHL Player of the year and Top Scorer Awards (Regular Season: 66 gms, 63 g, 88 a, 151 pts; Playoffs: 46 gms, 23 gms, 19 g, 19 a, 38 pts) ... GREAT AHL player ... 9 gms, 0 g, 1 a ... albeit Locke was smaller.

That is why NHL scouts/GMs get well-paid.

In order to succeed in the NHL at that size, you need something else to make up for it.  For most players who make it, its skating at an elite level.  It could be shot, or hockey IQ too, but for most people its skating.

Locke didnt have the skating and its also why he was drafted his second time through the draft and not his first and he went in the fourth round.

Catton will be a first rounder, likely top 15 and maybe top 10.  He has the skating and intelligence to get by.  Of course no player is guaranteed though

This was from April 15, I looked it over several times as I couldn't see Konsta Helenius in the 1st round. Am I going blind? How could you possibly not have him in the 1st round? Crazy. Then I did some research and this guy Jake Rill is a baseball reporter, maybe shouldn't write about things you don't have a clue about.

Frankly, I would have like to have seen Lias Andersson and had the two of them trade spots during the year.

Lias Andersson was injured and missed a lot of the second half of the season.  Josh Anderson finished 2022-23 strong, so when he struggled to start the year, they were going to give him time to work out of the slump.  By the time they would have made such a switch, Lias was injured, and then by the time he came back, he needed time to get to game speed again after the long injury.

So when would the move have been made?

  12. Mattheson is the vet to keep around.

Guhle, Kovacevic, Harris, and Xhekaj will be entering their third seasons in the league.  They aren't rookies anymore.  At this point, they should be able to take a step without Savard.

Struble played four full years of college so he's a bit more mature as well.  And Barron is make or break now, does he need Savard standing in his way on the Right side.

    RANDOM THOUGHT:

If David Savard were willing to sign a 3-yr extension this summer for $2.25 AAV with 25/26 20-team, 26/27 10-team NTC and 27/28 5-team NTC would you do it?

Makes him (hopefully) the 35-yr-old, 3rd pairing, veteran RHD to support Reinbacher and Mailloux the season after next ... AAV still tradeable.

    No

I'm moving him this summer or next trade deadline when his value will be highest.  He will only decline with age.

That's what he said, he also said in an interview with Servalli not that long ago that if the best player was a Left Defensemen they "might" consider trading down.

I think the bottom line is that Hughes is a smart cookie and will keep all options open. Everything he says is carefully measured as most teams like to keep information about who they might draft hidden to maintain maximum leverage in case of any trading.  Just glad the Coyotes won last night.

He said he MIGHT... key word MIGHT trade down in that interview.

Never did he say he wont draft a dman, which is why i asked Boagalott what he was talking about.

  15. 6 hours ago, Sir_Boagalott said:

As long as the 2 lotteries are won by teams ahead of the Habs they might be able to get Lindstrom or Iginla for sure if they want him.

At 1 point I was wondering if Hughes might surprise everybody and draft another d-man, but he has since said that he wont.  I pondered if that was intentional misdirection but I doubt he would publicly lie about it.   However, imagine the scenario that Celebrini, Demidov, Lindstrom, and Iginla are all taken before the 5th pick.  That could possibly change things.

No matter what happens they will get a great player.

He just.said yesterday that if D was the clear best player, hed take him.

    What are you talking about?

Yes, the Sens win was a pleasant surprise. Would have preferred a Habs regulation loss BUT the kids look good, will likely draft before Ottawa and maybe Arizona pulls a surprise tomorrow night. Hopefully the Canucks get a point tonight so it's a nothing game for the Oilers.

Arizona should be motivated for their last game.
