  1. I'd take a 2nd rounder for DD and be happy with that. I'd trade Markov for a big blue chip prospect center or winger and a draft pick or two to replace DD. I'd trade Gionta for a blue-chip prospect on wing,to a team looking to make a playoff run. Getting prospects as opposed to draft choices is the key. You have a better idea of how they project, and they are closer to contributing at the NHL level. Halak for Eller looks pretty good in that light now, and one wonders what we would think of the trade if MT actually used Eller properly and gave him DD's linemates. People talk about DD like he's some offensive genius. He is leveraging his linemates ability and makes the occasional decent pass Not exactly the second coming of Gretzky. He does not perform against capable shutdown defenders, and he is a huge defensive liability in every way. Trade him!
  2. I can't understand why anyone would trade Pleks. He's an awesome 200 ft player. DD is completely expendable and not a component of a championship team.
  3. The problem with DD is that he also produces goals against.
  4. I wouldn't say Eller has a good shot. In fact, I'd say he needs to work on it. I wouldn't trade him though. I would pencil him for the 3rd line center position for the next few years, and work on other ways of improving the forward group as a whole. We have a fourth line. And we have pieces of the other three lines. I would keep Gionta for a couple of years. I would move Markov and some of the regular suspects like Bourque, DD, and Briere for the scorer we need. Could be a blue chip prospect who will be ready in 2 years or so.
  5. As I noted in an earlier post, there is no doubt that Diaz was better at keeping the puck out of our net than others on the D. The question though, is what is the best path to building a team that can compete for a championship. In that light, he is too small, not physical enough and for a supposedly offensive D, doesn't generate offense. If Weise plays well, he could be a useful component of a team that can go deep in the playoffs; I don't think that is truer of Diaz than it will be about the players we eventually replace him with ( i.e Pateryn, or someone from another trade). That's why I don't mind the move. Totally agree though, that sititng him for 8 games prior to moving him was stupid. And in spite of the fact that I don't mind this particular trade, I still think the management team of Bergevin and Therrien is a disaster.
  6. I don't mind the trade. I have thought all along that the team needs to get bigger and faster. This is one step along that path. Diaz may be a better defenceman than some other guys we have, but he is not a legitimate top four D on a championship team, and his skill set does not make him a great bottom pairing D. Vancouver has a lot of injuries on D, but when everyone is back I doubt Diaz will play in the top four. He is not physical at all, and based on his entire time with us, his offensive skills are highly questionable. NEVER hits the net with his shot, and doesn't do much in the offensive zone. I'm sure we would have preferred a scoring prospect, or a big defenceman, but if the market was not there for guys like that, and we have no reason to believe it was, why not move a pending UFA who does fit into the long-term plan for someone your pro scouts obviously like? Waiting until the deadline might not make sense either, because Vancouver needed a D now. As to Weise, he's very fast (fastest player on the Canucks), big, physical, fights, and has decent enough hands to score well in the AHL and pot a few in the NHL in limited ice time with less than stellar linemates. Organizationally, he fits the need for character and team toughness, is a huge upgrade from Parros in terms of the bottom 6 forwards, and with White, Prust and Moen gives us a good 4th line plus one. People always underestimate skating as a tool; conventional wisdom has it that we are a fast team, although I think we get outskated quite often. Well we just got MUCH faster. It also allows us to waive or trade Parros, as well as Blunden, keeping Tarnasky in reserve as a 4th line callup. We also make room on the for either similar players in our system ( Nygren) or upgrades through subsequent trades. Championship teams often are built with small moves like this. What did you think when the Bruins traded for Kelley or Peverly or players of that type? Weise could be an asset if he plays well and is used properly ( big IF with MT coaching). Note also that it should remove the temptation for MT to play Briere on the 4th line, where he has no business being played.
  7. Absolutely he should be moved, but for prospects, as opposed to draft picks. Shorter development time. At worst a combination of the two. If you can get a 2nd rounder for Hal Gill at the trade deadline, what would Markov fetch from a team looking for a 2nd pairing PP guy and 3rd pairing even strength guy who can play key minutes. I'd say a good prospect and a 2nd rounder. Make the move!
  8. That's the point. This organization is being run by ppl without high school degrees. Anyone who can't see that the team is better with Murray out and Diaz in is an idiot. And yes, 5-zip and Bournival and Leblanc are pluses. Bourque and Briere and Murray need to head to the pressbox and stay there.
  9. Agreed. I sat 1st row behind the Habs bench during the debacle in Florida. Bourque is absolutely disinterested. He just can't wait to end his shift and get off the ice. Blank and vacuous expression on his face the whole time. There were only a few players who had any life on the bench...PK, Pleks, Gally, Gorges, Eller....it looked a lot to me like they had completely tuned out MT. I want a Captain who is a difference-maker, who shows no quit, and plays with passion. PK...
  10. Just to completely empty the sack... if ANY deal can be found for DD, unload him. Anyone who thinks this guy can be a #2 center is crazy. No defensive capability and his size is a liability. Gives up a goal for every goal his line scores. When Chucky comes back, give him DD's job and his winger. MT needs to stop moving problems around. Put Bournival with Pleks and leave him there. Eller is a perfect #3....keep him there and play him at #3 center. Put Gallagher back with Eller. Leblanc should get a regular shift. Murray and Bouillon to the pressbox. PK with Markov. Call up Pateryn. Play Beaulieu. Play Emelin on his best side. Play your best players in their natural spots until you run out of fits, then fill. Playing PK with Murray shows how desperate and disoriented MT really is!
  11. Funny things happen at the trade deadline. We got a 2nd rounder for Hal Gill! Wait until the trade deadline, see where we are, then make some decisions. Bourque is a big body who can skate and has a history of scoring goals. Some GM's of playoff-bound teams might view him as a 3rd liner who can make a difference in a long playoff run, and might believe he would benefit from superior linemates, better coaching and better overall utilization in their system of play. I would also make Markov available at the deadline. People forget that he never was that great a skater; now he's lost a full step below that. At the beginning of the year he was effective playing with PK because PK would cut across the ice to block people going around Markov, or he would cover for Markov's pinches that left him out of position. His cap hit is high, and he will want term to stay. GM's around the league will want his PP skills in a playoff run. He's a great trading chip. Same goes for Gionta. He's not scoring in the Habs system now, but GM's may view that as having to do with MT's brilliant dump and chase strategy. As an article posted on this site a few weeks ago clearly demonstrated, he's a possession beast, can play in all situations, and is defensively awesome. but he has lost a step, and his shots are nowhere near as crisp since his injury. Perfect deadline trade bait. MB needs to decide on a timeline to build this team. For me, it's 3-4 years out. Get some high picks or better yet, prospects, in order to shorten the development window. While I'm at it, they should make PK the captain.
  12. I keep reading that Kaberle's conditioning is poor. How does anyone know that or how can it be validated? I will say that he doesn't look especially fit or strong. I wonder how much better he could be if he was bulked up a bit? What kind of leverage does a team have in getting a player into better shape? Which brings to mind a broader point. I often wonder about how much work goes into helping players improve weak parts of their game, even if they are veterans? Sometimes they are small things that would make a big difference. Examples would be Hal Gill's inability to keep the puck in at the point. Or Josh Gorges' truly mundane and unimaginative play in the offensive zone ( if you're gonna give him all that ice time, why resign yourselves to poor offensive play?)....there are many other examples...faceoffs, clearing the zone, etc....but I digress. Kaberle of course would play much better with a solid partner. I watched him for years with the Leafs when I played in Toronto. He was never especially physical but he was decent defensively by using his skating ability and by making quick, crafty decisions. We need two new D...one should be a Craig Ludwig type player who would be a natural partner for Kaberle. The other should be a top 4 with a bomb from the point. Our D for next year worries me more than our forwards.
