  1. crap - i joined my 'normal' bracket tourney - but - forgot to join this one! oh well - maybe next year good thing - cuz - i'd probably win this thing in HWL anyhow! hehe
  2. i don't mind that pickups aren't included in the list. average joe doesn't use a pickup in Canada (they are much more prevalent in the US) - while average joe (family) will be driving a mini-van or suv. as for the idea that there won't be any more majority governments since they are corrupt with that absolute power - we are forgetting - that there isn't any such thing as absolute power, since every democratic government needs to have it's record voted on by the public every 4-5 years at the least. crazy thing about politics in Canada, is that regardless of how corrupt the Federal Liberal Party was, they continued to be re-elected and re-elected and re-elected. whether it is a minority government or majority government - the people must DEMAND a leadership that operates with the utmost of integrity.
  3. i can't comment on how hockey is marketed globally - but - i'll definitely say that in the Youngstown, OH area - where we are about 1 hour away from Pittsburgh, and therefore defininately within reach of attending Penguins games (this town is 50% Cleveland Browns, 50% Pittsburgh Steelers - so - although it is Ohio, it's also a Pittsburgh town) - the game isn't marketed AT ALL the way i've grown up to love and appreciate the sport. if i had grown up here - i doubt i'd be a hockey fan. in fact, i'm now concerned that my boys may get a skewed view of the game (although I'm sure I'll be countering the local marketing efforts with the truth) - cuz, not many young boys sign up to play hockey ... why? well - would you sign up your sons to play in the WWE? few would, certainly not me. and - if the youth could care less about hockey - when they grow up, there is no one around who likes hockey to buy tickets or watch on television. c'mon Pittsburgh! you can do it! just start selling THE GAME, not THE CRAP!
  4. sad, but true. when i lived in NYC, the hockey was marketed WAY differently. really, it wasn't much different than in Canada, other than that it had to play backseat to so many other major sports. but - where i am now - WOW - i was shocked. disappointed.
  5. since i now live 1 hour from Pittsburgh - i'm starting to know why this region doesn't embrace hockey ... marketing. i've never seen commercials that were all fights all the time, until i got here. the billboards are of fighting scenes. not that fighting isn't a part of the game - but - basically, at least where i live - you can't tell hockey apart from wrestling or boxing on ice! i can't comment on the city of Pittsburgh itself - but - at least in this area that is well within driving distance to see Penguins games, the marketing is poorly targetted IMO.
  6. i hope you're wrong! (there, that's my bias) and THIS will be the Liberal scare-tactic we can expect to see a lot of. no tangible reason to vote Liberal - only the hypothetical 'what if Harper leads Canada back to the extreme right' reason. i hope both the Liberals & Conservative & the also-rans give Canadians REAL issues to debate this time.
  7. please at least TRY to be objective. your bias is SO obvious. of course releasing those ads are a way of getting prepared for the election (whether you like the ads or not isn't the point). and, if the Liberals THINK the Conservatives aren't prepared, they will try and bring down the minority government - and with the upcoming budget debate, IF the conservatives were not prepared for an election and with a new Liberal leader, now would be an ideal time to make the attempt ... IF ... to suggest that Canadians aren't wanting to see another election ........ when exactly DO Canadians want to see another election? in 3-4 more years so that Harper can finish his term? so - it's true, Conservatives & Harper are trying to strut their stuff and intimidate the Liberal Party and all opposition - yes they are trying to be prepared - yes they are trying to communicate to the voting public that they are capable of forming a majority government and that they can govern the country well. greens as the wild card factor? we've been saying that for years and the greens have never been a factor on voting day (only on the days leading up to the election - only to see their influence fizzle). Harper has been moving the Conservatives to a more centrist position (probably not centrist enough for some, but, certainly not on the wayyyyy right like they were). the more time the Liberals give the Conservatives, the more centrist the Conservatives will become. it's a minority government - no one is comfy - it's a HUGE chess match and FINALLY the Conservatives are thinking multiple moves in advance - preparing for whatever the Liberals (& NDP & what the heck, even the mighty mighty Green Party) throw their way.
  8. as a minority PM, he has no choice but to watch the polls. that's why some people like minority governments. if Harper actually governed like a dictator (or someone with real 'king-making' abilities) he would be open to criticism or error that he would never be able to shake since he wouldn't have 3+ years to either have people forget or prove that his policy was good for the country or correct the policy. Harper has done a great job of leading this country given it's fragile political state. i'd like to see him with a majority next time. then, if the country doesn't like the results, it would be a good time to go back to the Liberals, after they have been out of power for 5 years (after being in power for what seems to have been forever)
  9. i agree. next question then ... Why are they effective? my opinion ... because people are lazy and don't research policies for themselves, so they rely on media. media consists of people doing their job and, as people, they are lazy. so - if a political party can serve on a silver platter the issues the media should target, they have a better chance of swaying the people's opinion, because, essentially, although people are good and mean well - they are lazy. negative ads --> happy media --> satisfied people --> votes come election time now - if people would actually research the issues and come to their own conclusions, then, maybe then, issues based, positive advertizing would be effective.
  10. i believe PM Harper HAS brought integrity back. these ads don't tarnish my image of him. to me - it's the game that needs to be played - unfortunate that it is played at all - but - we all know it was going to go there anyways - again, i'm just happy to see the conservatives on the offense instead of defense all the time.
  11. although i'm never a fan of negative campaign ads - i have always felt that the Liberal Party set the standard and the Conservatives were always left reacting to the first strikes of the Liberals. so - i'm actually happy to see the Conservatives as being pro-active and initiating (offensive), instead of re-active (defensive).
  12. ya - NWT is the best plate out there - by far. so - with your state bird being the blue bird - you would naturally have an easier time cheering for the Blue Jays - as opposed to the Cardinals! actually, i've always understood that the Cardinals were not named after the bird, but after a class of catholic priest. anyone else have info on that?
  13. i don't like the reflection - and the ribbon is meaningless to me i went for the bird - assuming that the bluebird is significant in some way. i'm glad they are keeping the 'show-me state' slogan on there - and - i'm glad they are not using those brown plates anymore - yuck!
  14. i remember those years - we were waiting desperately ... HOPING he'd join the HABS. dryden had been gone a few years, and a superstar like Tretiak would have been amazing.
  15. nice pic - thanks bebe but, this debate should be moved to the lounge where i can't find it! you bunch of humans. (is that P.C. enough?)
  16. no no no - Tim Hortons story and store pic goes on the back in the place or the art sculptures that are currently there ---- Tim Hortons marketing strategy, now THAT has been a piece of art!
  17. off-topic - to PTG ... i thought Pierre Trudeau was great when he was Prime Minister and I was a kid - but - then i started leaning to the right as far as national governance goes, so - i started liking Mulroney et al. that being said, the idea of Pierre on the $20 bill is a great one, IMO. regardless of whether a Canadian loved him or hated him, Pierre is a national icon and well deserving of the honor of being on our most popular dollar bill.
  18. i hear there is a problem with all the trees in Seattle - that it has been noticed they all lean towards the north. why? cuz Vancouver sucks so much. right Minny?
  19. i think Downie was getting 'revenge' because of the incident that happened with 9 minutes left in the game when O'Marra tried to hit a Russian who then turtled so that O'Marra flipped over him causing his head to hit the ice and his skate to hit (and break) the glass --- i know a lot of OHLers were real upset about the turtling-tactic the Russians were using to avoid getting hit. watching the Downie hit live, i thought it was clean ..... they didn't show replays
  20. i'm in Oshawa (just east of Toronto) but am moving in January to Youngstown, Ohio (i heard George W. needed a couple of Republican voters there - hehe) unfortunately, that Habs-Jackets game is on a Sunday but - i am only about 1 hour from Pittsburgh, so - i may get a healthy dose of Sid the Kid & Jordan Staal
  21. Mason from London was in net.
