2006-2007 Jean won with a prediction of 92 points when the Habs finished the year with 90 pts. If only we could have won that last game.
2007-2008 Adirondack Bud exactly predicted our final total of 104 pts.
2008-2009 Zowpeb won by predicting a strong start followed by a slower 2nd half ending with 99 points. The Habs finished the season in 8th place with 93 points. On September 22, 2008 Zowpeb predicted "I think we'll see a rough patch just past the mid-year point..." Wow!

Our fearless leader won with his prediction of 37-34-11 for 85 points. The Habs record was 31-35-16 for 78 points.
Honourable mention went to Habsfan who correctly predicted that the Habs would score 212 goals.
2012-2013 illWill won by predicting the Habs would finish with a record of 27-16-5 for 59 points.The Habs finished 29-14-5 for 63 points.
Honourable mention to PMAC and to former champion Chips who both predicted the Habs to finish with 58 points.

Predict
a) what the Habs regular season record will be: wins-losses-OTL-SOL
b) in what place in the Atlantic Division the Habs will finishc) in what place in the league the Habs will finish
d) the total number of goals the Habs will score this season (including 1 goal per shootout win).The winner will be based upon the most accurate prediction of the Habs final points, then most accurate record prediction. The latter three predictions will be used successively to break ties.
Don't forget to separate overtime losses and shoutout losses.

Not a good fit. Would have been a good fit back when he was a UFA. We offered more money and he turned us down.
The potential buyout option I'm mildly interested in would be Dany Heatley. He's pretty much in Alex Kovalev in New York mode at this point in his career, a slowing down superstar who needs a recharge. Minnesota will likely buy him out in order to pay for other players. That said he's still going to command some hard cash and I doubt we want to pay that. Just the idea of Heater in a Habs sweater scoring on the Senators feels pretty good. I'd be more interested in a guy like Latendresse as a reclamation project.
I think Heatley is injured and won't be eligible for a buyout. The buyout window will close on July 5 so its doubtful he will recover in time.

As long as they get at least 13 points in the next 18 games, I have it locked up. Not too bad after my second place finish in the contest last year. I'm also liking my Subban prediction so far.

Yes but buying Gomez out a year early doesn't change this. He won't be on the 2013-2014 cap in either case.

I don't see how using an accelerated compliance buyout affects Subban's contract at all (provided we send Gomez home for the year).

I expect him to go to New Jersey and put up 30-35 points in the 48 game schedule.
Can you imagine the fuss if this happens and we finish 9th 2 points behind NJ?
I really wonder if it is worth the risk to buy him out now rather than just send him home as planned. Maybe he'll sign in the West?

Why can't the Habs buy-him out Wednesday and sign him for 1$ ?
One of the rules with a compliance buyout is that the player cannot play for the team buying him out for at least 1 year. We can't sign him and we can't trade for him until that year waiting period is over. Maybe the accelerated buyout means we can get him back a year earlier than if we compliance buy him out in the summer?

There seems to be a lot of confusion here. The new accelerated buy out doesn't really help the Habs at only - only Gomez (and Redden).
It has no effect on our cap hit either this year or next. We get the same cap hit as we were going to get by sending him home for the year.
We pay him exactly the same salary as we would have by sending hi home.
I see only 3 differences:
1) Gomez gets to play for some other (NHL?) team.
2) and so might well end up improving one of our opponents (and playing well against us)
3) We get access to one of our 50 roster spots 6 months early.
I'm not sure this is such a great deal for the Habs. But we have to do it. If we don't we will really hurt our chances with future UFAs.

There will be a 48 game season.
Predict
a) what the Habs regular season record will be
b) in what place in the East the Habs will finish
c) the total number of goals the Habs will score this season (including 1 goal per shootout win).
1 point will be awarded for getting the correct number of wins.
1 point will be awarded for getting the correct number of loses.
1 point will be awarded for getting the correct number of OT loses.
2 bonus points for getting the entire record correct.
6 points will be awarded for getting the Habs final point total correct(3 pts for being exactly 1 off of the correct answer)
(1 point for being exactly 2 off the correct answer)
1 point for correctly predicting the Habs finish in the East.
The total number of goals the Habs will score will be used as a tiebreaker, if necessary.
Make you predictions before the beginning of Saturday's season opener against the leafs.

I predict they will introduce 3 on 3 hockey in the overtime. Possibly by adding 5 minutes of 3 on 3 after 5 minutes of 4 on 4.
Just like last time, the league will want to add some new and exciting aspect to bring the fans back. For the same reason we might see the introduction of some kind of coaches challenge.
I don't think this will happen, but I would like to see scrapped the rule imposing an automatic delay of game for shooting pucks over the glass.

These guys are giving profs a bad name. There are lots of intelligent and interesting ways you can analyze a team and/or a coach.
This is not one of them.
Thinking that anything intelligent can be uncovered by examining what a coach said in his first press conference is just ridiculous. There is no real reason to belive that what a coach says is what he thinks. The coach is trying to make a good first impression with the media, with the fans and with all the players. He is trying to motivate the stars and the journeymen. Maybe he believes Price is overrated, Kaberle is washed up or that Desharnais is too small. Is he likely to express these views in his opening press conference?
Apparently these profs would increase their evaluation of MT if he had opened his PC by saying that Kaberle is over-the-hill and that Gomez is an albatross because the numbers seem to reflect these evaluations. Would your own evaluation of MT as our new coach improve if he said these things?

Tampering always happens. Don't buy into anything you hear it doesn't. Players know where they want to go and agents know where they want to and they always contact GMs or their assistants in secret to see if there's a chance they can get a certain player. If you're a player like Parise, you know exactly where you can go and for how much.
Remember when Wilson and the Leafs got nailed for tampering? That wasn't because they were tampering but because they got caught. Don't believe anything otherwise. One of the easiest avenues to avoid being nailed for tampering is for example, let's say Mike Cammalleri a week before free agency called up Josh Gorges and asked him if Montreal was interested. Gorges then talks to Gainey about Cammalleri and Gainey says, "Yes, we're interested". Gorges goes back to Cammalleri and tells him yes, Montreal is interested. While it is wrong for Gainey to give Gorges that information, nobody would know because it's a private conversation between a GM and his signed player. It's not wrong at all for Gorges to talk to Cammalleri about it because there's no rules against players discussing what teams they wish to play for. This is how the "Miami Heat Three" got created with all three players signing to the same team at pretty much the same time.
Tampering always happens.
I don't dispute that tampering occurs. But the statements I bolded are both wrong. Gainey was allowed to tell Gorges that we are interested in Cammalleri. Both Gainey and Gorges were Habs employees and they are within their rights to discuss what players to target to improve the team. But if Gorges passes this info on to Cammalleri before Cammi is a free agent then Gorges and the Habs are guilty of tampering. The rules are explicit that players are not allowed to tell other players under contract about potential interest.
It probably happens but it is explicitly against the tampering rules.

Doesn't the Price arbitration guarantee us a 2nd window to buy out Gomez? I don't want to buy him out but if the Habs do, I'd rather do it later when we have as much info as possible about UFAs and possibly the new CBA.

So every year as part of my draft prep, I sit down and make a mini list of who I think the Habs could take with each selection (all the way to the 7th round which is always a doozy to predict). If I'm lucky, I pick a player that gets drafted by the Habs once every three or four years (the last one I had right was Leblanc, before that it was Corey Locke and I guessed the wrong round). This was my list (2 players per pick plus one wildcard):
3rd overall: Galchenyuk (3rd - MTL), Murray (2nd - CBJ)
33rd overall: Thrower (51st - MTL), Bozon (64th - MTL)
51st overall: Nieves (59th - NYR), Pelech (65th - NYI)
64th overall: Hudon (122nd - MTL), Vail (94th - MTL)
94th overall: Whitney (191st - CHI), K. Roy (97th - ANA)
122nd overall: Khaira (63rd - EDM), Stolarz (45th - PHI)
154th overall: Vermin (N/D), Rauter (N/D)
Wildcard: Mallet (57th - VAN)
Of the 15 on my list, 5 were picked by the Habs which is beyond unprecedented for me (although only 1 was in the right spot). That was part of the reason I was particularly happy with these selections. Interestingly enough, I was way off on both guys I had in the 122 spot. Both played in lesser leagues, the BCHL and NAHL respectively, I thought they'd have slipped through the cracks but evidently not. Also trying to predict college-bound guys hurt me as the Habs didn't pick any, file that one for the memory banks when certain media folk talk about a certain stereotype we've all heard before. Something tells me I'm not going to have a list like that again...

I (like everyone else) am very pleased and surprised at how well the Habs made out. I heard Timmons really liked Nystrom whom he saw when he went to scout Samuelsson.

This is great. I'm sure Murray was not our guy. Timmons gets to pick his guy. I'm hoping for Galchenyuk but I'm happy with whoever Timmons chooses.

Forsberg gives me a slightly lukewarm feeling...I think it's all the scouting reports that praise his work ethic and his willingness to be physical, without making really extravagant claims for his offensive talent. My sense (which I concede is not in any way expertly informed) is that this kid represents a 'safe' pick who nicely fits the preferred robotic NHL profile and will probably become a good NHLer and coach's favourite, but is unlikely to set the world aflame as a top-line star. I dunno, I'd rather we swing for the fences and get someone with the potential to dominate - if that's possible. I'm damned tired of second and third liners. But who knows, I could be way off base about all this.
I agree. Forsberg is a safe pick. If Yakupov and Galchenyuk are both gone when we make our pick, I think we'll chose one of the defencemen. I'd rather swing for the fences and take Grigorenko. I'd be willing to risk him busting and many fans feel that way. But Timmons doesn't have that luxury. If our pick ends up being anything less than good, then people will be saying we blew it for the next 15 years. For this reason, I think we'll be making a safe pick. To me that means Yakupov, Gachenyuk, Forsberg or a Dman.

I think Ellis and Tinordi have looked great in this tournament. Bournival has been pretty good too. Beaulieu has struggled especially in his coverage in his own end. Its only 4 games so I don'twant to read too much into this tournament.
Many people are comforting themselves with the fact that Subban had similar deficiencies in his game at Beaulieu's age. But Subban's progression was incredibly rapid and is very unusual (essentially unique). The chances that Beaulieu improves at the same rate are practically zero. I think Beaulieu will be a good player but his growth is more likely going to be at Weber's pace. I think it is pointless to compare the weaknesses in Beaulieu's game with those of a 19 year old P.K. Subban.
