Woah! Unexpected! I thought you were joking or something. HUGE trade.

I think Boston wins. They get a strong defenceman, a decent checker and a good forward. Is Sturm a center? If not their first line has deteriorated. If not then it's all good. It definitely hurts San Jose though. They traded their team for Joe Thornton.

Yes Sturm is a center. He is okay, never really lived up to his promise. Stuart is a pretty good D-man abd Primeau is a career grinder (a pretty good banger). But ... there is no way this package is worth Thornton, one of the top centers in the league. I can't believe they couldn't get more. I don't believe Boston offered Thornton to many teams.

I'm not sure, but I don't think it was a 30 game guaranteed clause......more of a payment the Habs had to make if he didn't play 30 games (cause the CBA didn't allow the Habs to offer him a one way contract which is what he wanted to come to NA). Anyways, this is kinda semantics.....even if he was guaranteed 30 games played, what would happen if the Habs disregarded that? No court would grant an injunction forcing the Habs to play Streit, he would be awarded damages in the form of money. Same difference.

Nothing really stops the Habs from not playing him. I think they want to play him, they haven't given up on him.

We thrashed this question out quite a while ago. I believe the answer was that if the Habs don't dress Streit for 30 games we have to pay the Swiss Elite League a (relatively small) financial penalty. I don't think this is a serious consideration for Julien and Gainey when they decide whether to play Streit.

Perhaps Hainsey would have been better than Streit but the Habs brain trust definitely didn't think so. Even if Hainsey is/will be better, Streit is definitely the next on our defensive depth chart.

  3. This doesn't make any sense. We have a (short term) severe shortage of defencemen and many of you suggest we solve this by trading away our defencemen. What we need to do is pick up more defencemen. I truely doubt we can improve on defence by exchanging the few we have for others.

We could trade a forward, or a goalie or a prospect (not a defencemen since we haven't got any) but we still need to find an available D-man. I don't know of any particularly good choices available right now. Perhaps Gainey will find us someone but it won't be for Streit.

Hainsey may pan out but I wouldn't count on it. I think he is a career AHLer.

It's because I have so much work to do. I've found the busier I am, the more time I fool around on HW.

    Interesting.

You mean you have work to do outside of HW?

    ;)

  5. People, give your heads a shake. While things have not been going particularly well for the past couple of weeks there is no need to start throwing blame around. Gainey has done a fantastic job.

Here is part of a post I made during the preseason in a thread about Gainey's performance.

Gainey has been our GM for 17 months including 10 months during which he couldn't make any changes to the nhl roster. Looking back to the state of the team in the pre-Gainey era makes it crystal clear what a good job he has done and is doing.

There are of course some problems and he has made some mistakes but we can't expect perfection.

  6. All this discussion of the leafs and the refs reminds me of something I saw in the November 11th game with the leafs at Buffalo.

In the third period the leafs took a delayed penalty and one of the sabres (I forget which) walked in alone on Belfour. He took a wrist shot and beat Belfour. On the play Belfour got a piece of the puck with his stick but the puck just deflected a little bit off its course and went into the leaf net. The sabres were celebrating when the ref waived off the goal.

Why? Because there was a delayed penalty and when Belfour touched the puck with his stick the ref ruled the play was over.

I loved the expression on Lindsay Ruff's face as the ref was explaining his decision.

I won't be watching the game till the third cause of work.. but I have sent out several prayers to all the religious denominations I could think of for a strong first period and a dumb penalty-free game...

I can't promise any thing but the smart money says that Ganesh has our back on this one..(like all deities..hes a habs fan).

I saw a rumour on Bob McKenzie's blog that the Hurricanes are going to put Nergal, a minor Babylonian diety who has a huge upside, on waivers this weekend. BG has to do something before its too late. We got Begin off waivers we can get Nergal too.

Let's hope he can refind his form. If he keeps on playing like he's now, he could be down in hamilton for one very long conditioning stint.

I don't think he can stay in Hamilton for more than 2 weeks. He didn't have to clear waivers when he went down because he is on a conditioning stint. I think we have to take him on the nhl roster or else expose him to waivers if we want to keep him in Hamilton.

Just checked (took me a while) and the answer is no.

Nov 4. We scored 1st and trailed 2-1 after 2 periods.

Nov. 5 We led 2-1 after 2 periods and scored to make it 3-1.

Well I was close. Thanks for checking...:/)

    You are welcome.

Looks like we are starting to apply some pressure.:ghg:

    Peter Puck, love the avatar!!!!!!!

Actually, what you said is the truth. Low, Low scoring game by the looks of it.

    [Edited on 2005/11/26 by Howie_Morenz]

Thanks, I liked my Gainey/H. Richard avitar but I thought I should go with something more in character.

    :)

That Avatar was something??? puck in intermissions when I was a kid. cannot remember his name. Was it Peter Puck? It was great when I was a kid as I liked the intermissions.

Yep - that's Peter Puck. Here is an article

The fact is that Dagenais is a marginal NHL player who had the misfortune of starting his career right before the new rules came in.

If it werent for the premium now placed on speed then his sniping abilities and large frame would make him a decent player..as it is hes too much of a liability defensively for what meager offerings he does bring to the table.

All of that aside..with the large number of injuries we are seeing develop over the course of this season I just feel that his presence here takes up a roster spot that could be filled by a player with much better all around skills that would be useful to the team in many more ways.

If he were not french canadian from montreal then RDS TQS LA PRESSE and the journal would have been hollering for his head for months now.

I completely disagree with the highlighted statement. I do not know who we could replace Dags with. We don't want to bring up one of our prospects - they are much better off getting ice time in Hamilton than getting 2-6 minutes per night with the Habs. We could bring in a new player but we don't want to spend any more than we pay Dagenais.

Although you may not feel that he was worthy of 3rd star against Florida his contribution to that game certainly put him in the top 6-7 Habs for that one night. I think it very unlikely we could find someone more useful for similar money. In many respects Dagenais is an excellent 20th guy on the roster in the new NHL with its shootouts.

"Carey Price is experiencing a cruddy beginning to this season. Here's his stats so far:

    7 games

    389 minutes played

    210 shots against

    29 goals allowed

    0 shut outs

    4.48 average

    0.862 save percentage

    1 win

    5 losses

Don't know what the factors are. The Tri-City Americans lost 6 - 2 last night but it wasn't Price in nets.

The Tri-City Americans have the worst record in the whole WHL with 3 wins, 7 losses, 38 goals for & 48 goals against."

    :hlogo::ghg::hlogo:

Well Price has really picked up his game since shortcat1 posted the above on October 27.

    Here are his current stats:

    18 games

    1026 minutes played

    559 shots against

    53 goals allowed

    0 shut outs

    3.10 average

    0.905 save percentage

    5 wins

    8 losses

That means in the intervening month he has these stats:

    11 games

    637 minutes played

    349 shots against

    24 goals allowed

    0 shut outs

    2.26 average

    0.931 save percentage

    4 wins

    3 losses

I'd say he is back on track.

    :can:

very nice work and calculations, pp. :/) Truly appreciated. :/) :/) :/)

You are most welcome shortcat1 (is there a shortcat2?).

We all have to help out watching the prospects - especially now that Beckham is trolling elsewhere.
