  1. A look at Petry's possession numbers (from Dobberhockey. The orange bubble suggests he did drop off a bit given that he wasn't facing particularly hard competition & that he had a mix of offensive and defensive zone starts. Still, given his status as a RHD who is still producing some offence, I could see Petry fetching something decent on the market.

If he's with the Habs in the fall, I suspect MSL will give him enough opportunity to look enticing and get a nice return

Doesn't impact my perception at all, but another outstanding (IMO) contract by Hughes.

How did you like the trade in the first place? We’re the two picks a steep price or reasonable?

personally I think Newhook has 60 point upside (and a reasonably high floor) so I thought the price paid was reasonable

  3. Thought this deserved its own thread because IMO it comes in with a lower cap hit than some expected

This seems like really good value to me, as Newhook already seems to offer 3 million dollar value as a mid 30 point, middle 6 speedster, who can hold his own defensively.

certainly has potential to be a steal of a contract if Newhook becomes a 50 point guy in the top 6.

How does this affect your perception of Newhook as a Hab?

  4. After some original disappointment with the Reinbacher selection, I really like the kid.

our D core has potential to be among the best in the entire league if Guhle, Hutson, and Reinbacher reach their ful potential, and our Barron, Mailloux, Xhekaj and Harris type yield another top 4 guy and excellent bottom pair guys.

I do worry that we still need to add a top tier forward, but hopefully we address that in another way

  5. Absolutely brutal announcement by Price as well. I feel bad for him, but I’m also just generally disappointed by the entire thing.

Reinbacher needs to be the next Moritz Seider. I can’t see it though.

Really disappointed but hope to be proven wrong

I guess what I was trying to say is that I like Leonard slightly better than Benson because of the physical component but I really like Benson too.  Just not sure how many small guys you can have in the top 6.  I am no pro scout so my opinions are just opinions of a die hard Habs fan who has read stuff and watched some clips. Should be an interesting week coming up.

Yea I’m kind of in a similar spot in that I’m worried about how good of a fit Benson is. Awesome player though.

Also agree with Don, Carlson falling to 5 would be 10/10.

only way I see that happening is CBJ loves Smith and takes him at 3, and SJS are dead set on Michkov at 4. That would be crazy

    Mine would be:

    Smith: 9.5/10

    Michkov: 9.5/10

    Leonard: 9.0/10

    Benson: 8.5/10

    Reinbacher: 3/10

    Dvorsky: 3/10

I agree with an earlier quote that if we are taking Reinbacher or Dvorsky then we can trade down and still get them.

Interesting with Benson at 8.5. Benson might be my “favourite” prospect in the draft. If we didn’t already have a few smaller guys in the top 6 I’d put him up there with smith. Even then I think I’m letting the difference between 5’10 and 6’0 affect me too much

I have a feeling he’s gonna turn out similar to a Brayden Point

  8. How happy will you be from 1-10 if one of these are picked at 5: Michkov, Smith, Benson, Leonard, Reinbacher, Dvorsky

    Michkov: 9.5/10

    Smith: 9.5/10

    Benson: 9/10

    Leonard: 8/10

    Reinbacher: 3/10

    Dvorsky: 4.5/10

This made me realize we have a looot of amazing options at 5. Trusting in HuGo to make the right choice and not galaxy brain it

There is a growing expectation if you believe all the newsletter writers who are quite often wrong. There is almost always a surprise. Who thought a supposed generational talent like Wright would drop to 4 last year?  Nobody on this forum.

By the draft wright wasn’t considered generational, and some like Scott Wheeler had him at 4th OA. So it was definitely an option considered by reputable pundits

Also a lot of articles about the Habs trying to trade up.  I am sure Hughes is working the phones but those kinds of deals rarely happen. I don't see much point in trying to trade up 1 spot (unless the cost is reasonable) as the guy you want at #4 might be available at #5.  Teams are pretty tight lipped about who they are taking (obviously) to maximize trade leverage.

    https://nhltradetalk.com/canadiens-trying-to-trade-for-number-two-pick-2023-nhl-draft/

This does give us a little insight though. Sounds like this means the Habs don’t like who they may be left with at 5, my guess would mean they don’t want to swing on Michkov.

A trade that actually could happen is swapping 5 for 4 with San Jose, and giving up another decent pick and prospect to do so. San Jose then takes Michkov & has extra assets on top of that.

MTL likely takes Will Smith at 4 in this case.

  11. Which of our left defence (both NHL level and prospect) would you guys consider in a deal for Adam Boqvist?

    Harris, Mailloux, Engstrom?

A move like this would make sense, especially clearing room for Hutson in a few more years. Boqvists numbers are quite good for a 22 year old d man

Smith is better than Cooley who was challenging for 1OA so yes I think he would have went #1 last year

No one is talking Benson who Id like if we dont take Michkov.

Out of Michkov, Benson and Smith, which is your favorite at 5?

  13. To me it seems we’ll have a choice between Michkov, Carlson, and Smith. Personally I’m happy with whichever of them makes it to 5

Michkov is a first overall talent in some drafts. Russian factor is the only thing holding him back from an east top 3 pick, pushing Fantilli for 2. And a DAMN good #2 pick. That at 5, even with the risk, is incredible imo.

Carlson on the other hand seems to be a safe pick. A complete package, who will see the NHL within 2 years. Big body. Similar player to Fantilli in many ways. Would be an incredible pick at 5.

Smith I see as the guy who falls to us. He’s one of the slickest players in the draft. Incredibly deceptive, top notch vision, boggling creativity, with a good shot to boot. Offensively, the potential is sky high. The concern is his overall defensive effort. Will he be a one dimensional guy, or evolve into a genuine 1C?

I’ll be happy with either. Might have to go Carlson if I had my pick, because while he’s safe, he’s still got incredible potential

  14. We’ve heard Hughes say the priority is development. He’s been good so far so I’ll trust him to make the right choice. Slaf has scored the occasional goal and looks good in bursts, invisible other times, but I certainly wouldn’t say he’s getting nothing at the NHL level. He’s improving

still, I think a ton of icetime in Laval could be helpful personally

Subban really dropped off after he went to Jersey. I don't know if it was any one injury, but that fact is, he had a fairly injury-riddled career, and the accumulation of damage caught up to him. His first step was never that great, and without having watched him closely in the last couple of seasons, I would guess that once that regressed he was done as an impact D-man.

Without question the most consistently electrifying player the Canadiens produced after Lafleur, PK was a fabulous player for us and for Nashville too. He brought it every single shift and thrived on the big stage. I loved him from Day One and never understood the joyless resentment of him evinced by some fans. The talk about his dodgy D-zone play was just that, talk, oblivious to the fact that when he did make a gaffe he usually recovered very well. Meanwhile the toxic attitude of Habs management toward him said a lot more about those A-holes than it did about him. Not unrelatedly, he had to put up with a sh*tload of subliminal and not-so-subliminal racism, especially early in his career when he was widely demonized for being too uppity

Although The Trade seems to have been undertaken for the wrong reasons (Therrien hating PK's guts, MB being angry over a contractual outcome which his own stupidity ensured, etc.) it was a classic case of a trade that, thanks in part to Weber's career-ending injury, worked out for both teams.

Props to PK for a great career. 👍 I look forward to what will surely be a memorable second act in broadcasting.

PK made it exciting to be a Habs fan. That’s why I was so gutted when he was traded. He and Price were the biggest lights in a pretty dark era for the Habs.

This new youth has me feeling a similar spark though

I’ll play Grinch and say I don’t like it.

Suzuki is still developing. We need him to find another level to his game, which I believe he will do, but being C of the Habs is a lot of added pressure. Look what it did to Patches.

I would have left Suzuki with an A and given it to Edmundson as a transitional move. Reassess when he’s gone in a couple of seasons.

I get the thought process, but Suzuki seems like a quiet guy, and because of that, a lead by example guy.

I don’t think the captaincy will make him try to do too much, other than work even harder. Plus, he’s known as a sportsmanlike player, and will likely be able to talk to the refs well.

Personally very happy they went with him !

Lunqvist wants out because other Dmen are ahead of him so he gets little play time.

Habs are thin at RD for sure but who is Lunqvist ahead of? Is he better than Barron or Harris at this point?

Would he be guaranteed a regular roster spot on the Habs right now?

Fox and Trouba both shoot right for the Rangers, and the Habs don’t have a single d man of that calibre. He’s certainly got more opportunity in mtl

I am not too impressed by Lundkvist's stats. He may be a puck moving D, but he hasn't produced much up to now.

I would rather try somewhere else

Interesting, I find his stats line pretty impressive. At 19 and 20 he was top 3 in team scoring in arguably the 3rd best league in the world as a d man. At 21, in his first season of NA hockey, he produced close to .5ppg in the AHL. It all screams potential to me.

As for his low NHL numbers, I pay them no heed, as low ice time is literally why he’s requested a trade.

I think Lunqvist has potential to be something like Ryan Ellis
