Little Mosque on the Prairie

sounds funny to me. I hope people don't get up in arms over this coming from an immigrant family I know and have seen what its like to assimilate. A funny story I heard on the BBC about Halloween was about these indian immigrants from India who moved to Brooklyn just before Halloween. Its a long story but its truly funny that the poor woman who was alone didn't know that Halloween everyone dresses up as characters (like mobsters) (same mobsters she read about in books) and knocks on peoples doors asking for candy. She ended up locked in her room scared to answer the door. Well the story ended when she called her brother and the brother said "There doing something called Halloween".

The CBC is good for one thing and thats hockey. I'd say the Olympics too but now they don't even have that.

The CBC goes for quantity over quality with a bunch of crackpot HBO rejects that no one wants to watch. I know I'm a bad Canadian for wanting to watch those hated american channels ( ) but I like quality shows, not something Mrs.Stewart's 3rd grade class whipped up in half an hour.

Out of everything you listed? Rick Mercer is the only good thing and it's slowly moving to the Comedy Network. Alice, I Think is a decent show too but thats a CN show too. Used to like Air Farce but it's only a shadow of it's former self now. In the mid-90s it was great.

yeah I saw a grammar error right when I had hit Add Reply then was like 'oh snap'

i never even noticed the error...

have you heard of the idea that the brain can usually discount spelling errors or letter rearrangement while reading if the 1st and last letters are still where they should be?

by the way, this idea is kind of 'thrashed' by the fact the the 't' wasn't there in the first spelling of 'against'

I'm a Canadian Muslim and I've seen the ads and gone to the website, and thus far, I'm very encouraged. I think it's about time that there is more mainstream media representations of regular, everyday muslims, and not just terrorists or highjackers or whatever :puke:

I have no problem with laughing at our differences and similarities and misunderstandings, I just hope that the show is fair with its jokes, and doesn't take any low blows at any one group...

thats awesome to hear shorthand. The show is light hearted, has perspective from an immigrant. I'm tired of immigrants being made the butt of jokes when they should be celebrated.

This show isn't making fun of anybody which I like. Unlike shows like He Haw back in the 70's. I remember my mom saying (grew up on a farm) that my family hated that show and how it made fun of farmers and country people. Then I watch this Blue Collar Comedy stuff and I guess I don't get the joke because its making fun of where I come from. Yeah, I make fun of my country roots on both sides but I'm in no way to be taken seriously when I go into a country accent and start saying them instead of they etc.

Funny thing is that if this show was on in America people would be up in arms. But I doubt any show that deals with a small minority would ever make it on tv here.

You guys in Canada are lucky to live where you live. I know everyone disses Canadian tv but I love it. Why? Well besides I think its pretty funny its culturally diverse and reflects the great country. Slowly the US is changing but slowly. For example interracial relationships are still tabooish down here. The only shows that I can think of that have had a long interracial relationship is Grey's Anatomy, Lost, Smallville, and ER. People are stereotyped even in one of my favourite shows Ugly Betty. They just had to go the illegal immigrant route with the father. Yes I know its a hot button topic but why? It just enforces a stereotype that is creeping into this country about spanish speaking people being 'illegal', I don't care if the stereotype is true or not (thats debatable) but coming from a German/Hungarian background where my community was isolated during the world wars because they spoke german and then was forced to ditch there heritage (german schools/church) because of fear of backlash I find disheartening.

People who stereotype need to put the shoe on the other foot (I think thats what the saying is).

Maybe thats why I have such strong feelings about race, I dunno. I mean what is the definition of 'white'? I'm not 'white' I'm more maygar then german even though my hungarian side denies they inter mingled with the hungarian population (long story hungary is very diverse) I don't look german-ish heck my father has a dark complexion, my mom's side thought he was italian.

Anyway before I continue ranting on racial diversity and keeping ones culture and not being afraid of something different as its not threatening and should be celebrated instead of made fun of and criticized.

Wow, Pierre, that's fantastic... I agree all around. I think it's about time more minorities are included in the mainstream media, and I think slowly but surely, it's happening... But it takes a while for "the masses" (if you will) to accept it. It's almost like "until everyone and their uncle has met a muslim / black / hungarian / arab / insert group here and realized that they weren't all mobsters / terrorists / drunks / womanizers etc it doesn't change. Especially with the constant fear-mongering that happens on a lot of mainstream tv stations and radios (Rush Limbaugh, Fox television, etc...)

Take the case of Keith Ellison. Have you heard about this guy? He's the newly-elected congressman from Minnesota and he's the first Muslim congressman in US history. So he decides he wants to do his swearing in on a Quran instead of a bible, because he's Muslim right, so it sort of naturally follows, and these ppl all get COMPLETELY up in arms about "How can he do this" and "The Quran is completely opposed to all US values" and "then he's swearing an oath to protect the terrorists, not the american ppl" and "if we don't tighten up immigration laws, there'll be more of them coming." and I'm like - Oh, really, that's interesting, because you know that Muslims died on 9-11 too, and there's nothing to say you can't be Muslim and Western and do you really think all these ppl came to West (Canada, US, European countries) if they hate it so much? The funniest thing is the argument that tighter immigration laws will stop it, because Ellison is a born African-American who was Catholic and decided to become Muslim in college...

I always laugh too when ppl look at me in complete disbelief when I get into a heated conversation about Hockey and know the names of all the players and their stats and what-not, and they're shocked because here's this little arab looking muslim girl wearing a headscarf who they probably weren't expecting to speak proper english and now she's talking about how it was the unfair call on Koivu that turned the game around in favour of the Caps, or Don Cherry's an idiot for hounding on Sydney Crosby... Yeah, that always gives me a good laugh, but really, I see no conflict whatsoever with being a hockey fan and a muslim and a canadian and all that wrapped into one. Why should there be?

Exactly!

Yeah Keith Ellison, my uncle said the same thing. I said I could care less if the person prays to a tree or a rock he or she is going to protect and govern by the constitution no matter what he or she believes in. Heck I think they should pass a law that when politicians do a swearing in the put there hand on the constitution since thats what they are to uphold and protect. Plus the whole bible/Quran thing isn't official. Its a photo op basically the official swearing in is when they all do the en mass thing.

I like other perspectives in life. For example most of the people who dis on islam probably have never read the Quran where they would know that Jesus is talked about a lot. Which is why I was talking about why this show is good for people. It breaks the ice. Prejudice starts when people get into uncomfortable situations and then go back to what they feel as comfortable and then they start to think people are after them and feel threatened.

Full agreement there... There was an article before Christmas that the Ottawa Citizen, a major paper here, wrote, about how the religious text with the most references to the virgin mary is the Quran. I knew that already, as a muslim, but I think it came to a shock to a lot of readers...

Yup its all about breaking down barriers, people just have to warm up to people and you'd be surprised how well they would get along.

Exactly. I mean, I was born here and I lived in Canada just about my whole life, and my parents CHOSE to come here, to live here, and they love it. It's there home just as much as it is someone's whose great-great-great-grandparents came 200 years ago or whenever. I go to visit Egypt (where my extended family is) and I don't feel like taht's home, so when people tell me "go back to your home" (which unfortunately, I've actually had people say to me, not often, but it's happened) I think "where are you sending me exactly? This IS my home. This is my country, these are my people. I pay taxes and watch hockey and vote, adn read the globe and mail. I listen to Steward Maclean on Vynl cafe for God's sake. My English is better than my Arabic"... the long and short of it is, I BELONG here, and just because my skin shade is not very light and I call God "Allah" that makes me non-Canadian? Please... this country (this continent, actually) belonged to the Natives (who I think are treated atrociously, by the way) and EVERYONE else who came here, whether last week or 500 years ago, is an immigrant. And that's what makes it different and special, you know?

I took a course in my last year of university about Italian heritage in North America, and when they first came, they were also treated with suspicion and prejudice. As were the irish before them, and the germans before them, and the blacks after them, and the japanese, and the chinese, and the russians / eastern europeans during the cold war, and now it's the middle-easterners / arabs turn... so it happens EVERY time a new group begins to settle in large numbers, which is positive to look at because then I think we'll get over this eventually for the Muslims/Arabs, but sad at the same time because you would think that after that many waves of immigrants, we'd get over it and realize that they're OK...

I'm happy to say that many of my close friends are from all colours and origins and backgrounds. It's really what's inside that counts. And there's good and bad in every group... Anyway, that's enough of a rant...
