the order in which they fell by points then the Thrashers

1. philly

.........

14. avs

15. NYI

16. tampa

17. flames

18. wild

19. pit

20. dal

21. nashville

22. thrashers

leaving, rangers, sens, sj as the non division winners, buf, nj, van, ducks, wings as division winners. So the next four teams to fall, will go by order of non division winners first then division winners.

So 23rd is the best the Sharks pick can be for us, and that would mean that the Sharks must lose to the wings, rangers and sens both win their series. If neither the rangers or sens win their series, and Sharks lose to the wings, then the pick goes to 25th. But if the Sharks beat the Wings then the pick goes to 27th at the worst.

That change only applies to the Final 4. The Rangers can still pick 17th if they lose to the Sabres.

Basically, that change would've meant that last season:

26. Detroit (Presidents Trophy winner - out in first round)

27. Anaheim

28. Buffalo

29. Edmonton

30. Carolina

Bob MacKenzie first broke the news of the change and later corrected it. He acknowledged he had made an error and the actual pecking order is less complicated and radical than he orignally had thought (and wrote about).

So here's all you need to know about the new rules for entry draft order of selection: The only change to the existing format is that the final four teams that make it to the Conference finals will get the final four picks in the draft, regardless of where they finished in the regular season.

The Cup champion will pick 30th, the Cup finalist 29th and the two losers from Conference championships will pick 28th and 27th. Whichever of those two teams finished lower in the regular season standings will get the 27th pick.

Otherwise, the order of selection process is not changed for the other teams that don't make it to the Final Four.

As it sits according to the Draft Value Chart, Habs would need to package their two first rounders plus their second round pick to move to #3 overall. Two first round picks would get them to #4. Their own first and second picks to #5. S.J. first and their second to #7 overall.

There are some variable there. Last year they had an offer for the #16 pick (1100 points value) from S.J. for their first (#20) and third (#83) which total 1120 points. But the Habs shopped around and got a better offer, so the Sharks upped their offer to a first and a second (#53). In the other draft pick deal, Montreal traded their picks at #79 and #109 to move up to #66 for Ryan White. That deal was almost exactly even as far as the draft value chart was concerned. I think Mtl gave 1 extra point or something out of about 500.

Yea I had it wrong, I reread Bobby Mac's article, so it's only the final 4 which effect the draft order.

So since the rangers and Sens are behind the Sharks, a win by both teams and a sharks loss and the pick would drop to 21st. A Sharks win and the pick goes to 27th and counting. So the pick will end up between 21st and 30th. Sorry for the mix up.
