Bullsmith
This is an arguement i have heard alot. Who is actually fast? Pleks Higgins Lapiere Begin Dandenault Markov is a good skater, but not fast. There is no one else on the team who pull away from other players, make things happen with there speed. So I'll stick to as a team not very fast. Come on, did you watch any of the habs-sabres games last year? Or are they slow too? Johson and Kostitsyn have excellent speed and can pull away from other players. So did Perezhogin. Amazingly Garth Murray can absolutely fly once he gets up to speed, although it doesn't really matter since he can't do anything with the puck. Koivu's not a rocket but he's very quick in the zone. Samsonov's problem wasn't his skating either. Streit's also a strong skater. As for guys coming ups Grabovski's unbelievably quick and even Chipchura is a deceptively smooth skater. So that leaves Bonk, Kovalev and Ryder as the only slow forwards. I freely admit we were very inconsistent about using out speed, but when we did we could skate with anyone. It's the one area the habs could really compete with the better teams.
PB
The team's speed is rather good, specially on the quick side of things. This aspect was more readilly apparent during Gainey's tenure as a coach, less so under Julien and somewhat even less under Carbo. Gainey's system depended more on speed to be efficient, just as it should when your team has it. Anyway, above the speed and explosiveness as personified by the like of Higgins, a team's good overall speed is in large part the result of a great level of syncronicity found from the group as a whole...... cohesion and syncronicity of intents make for faster and better executions.... this level of cohesion wasn't reached during our last season and both our apparent and actual speed suffered.
