ShortHanded
I don't think this necessarily means that Bonk and Johnson are gone. I imagine that Gainey will let them test the open market, and perhaps try to sign them for a bit less than the other offers, if they are willing. I agree with this. I hope we resign Johnson. Bonk, I like him, but I'm willing to let him go as I doubt he will sign for what I consider a low enough price. Gainey did not say he would not make them offers. He said he would not make them offers before July 1st. I think the addition of Lahti means that Gainey was looking for a cheaper alternative to Johnson for a fourthline line role. That being said, it was great to have Johnson on board and we should consider re-signing him if he's willing to take a big enough paycut. Johnson is not a 4th liner. 3rd line or second line depending on how they're used. I hope he comes back to play on the third line with Chippers. Agreed... but do we have enough for a checking line minus Johnson? I think if we put Johnson on the third we would have nothing left but the kids to make up our checking line... the checking line necessarily need a New face with proven checking line ability... needless to say I like your idea
JoeLassister
I see the new players in the fall as being Lahti LW Jancevski D O'Byrne D(maybe) Ferland RW (hits hard and plays 2way) Chipchura C (takes over 4th line on the way to the 3rd) call ups - Grabovski , D'Agostini, Milroy I assume that Kosty will be on the team again and don't list him here because he was on the team when the season ended. The UFA I think Gainey will sign will be Keith Tkachuk to play with Koivu and Kovalev. I can't see them getting a #1 center in the offseason. I disagree with all the posts including Jancevski, Ferland, Milroy and Chipchura in CH lineup next year. And i would agree with every posts including D'Agostini or/and Grabovski (i don't think Grab will be part of the team next season) in the lineup. What the heck about Jancevski. I've seen him play and does't find him better than Markov, Souray, Komi, Streit, Bouillon, Gorges, Dandenault. So i don't think he has a chance next season... and then Emelin will arrive, O'Byrne is almost there... Jancevski has to impress WAY MORE than he does right now to clinch a spot. but as one brilliant poster posted in another thread Imagine our fourth line is our checking line .. with Johnson there Dreaming here = three offensive lines the third with two way prowess (alla vermette like the senateurs) and the foruth is the checking B)
IN THE HEARTS OF MEN
with that said, O,bryne does have a bigger up side (future potential) compared to dan jancevki but he is not a better defensemen. i have seen 20 home games this year and he is the doggs best defencemen. he even won the team award by a land slide. You must of seen the game at the bell. dan at 25/ 26 is closest on the farm to ready. Emelin hasn't come over yet and until he does we must assume we will have hockey without him next year. if we want to make a push for elite hockey the close to 4 million spent on both bouillion and dandy is the play that is not justified. dan jancevski is the team leader/ #1 defencemen / +- leader and (what tied for points?) on defence for a bulldogs team 2 games away from a calder cup. Yet all the hype goes to the bigger younger flare guy in o'bryne who carries that high prospect status. Meanwhile WE let another guy slip away the last time we were in this spot IN THE PLAYOFFS. (FRANCOIS BEAUCHMEIN) francois quietly went about his business in hamilton and was hands down are best guy but we spent all are time and focus on others like hainsey and whoever else and look now. he's logging 30+ min for anahiem. now im not saying Dan is Beauchi but i am saying that you are disreguarding the fact that Dan is better right now then obryne. P.S. If montreal is looking to replace the shot on the point by a defencemen from HAM it's BENOIT he's "that guy" Team America World Police Hamilton Division Edited June 6, 2007 by IN THE HEARTS OF MEN
IN THE HEARTS OF MEN
Oh, and O'bryne did have a one hella of a game 3. He had a mean streak i haven't seen in about 4 games from him. But the nhl is based on 82 games plus an extra 16 playoff wins. He still lacks that consistency. So, if you watched them ( doggs) on a regular basis you would see O,bryne has a great future i believe it's just not quite yet. Not that I am wondering if he is NHL bound, or not. More just a question as to how he is playing and if he is progressing at all. He was a tough defenceman here with a lot of offencive upside. He surprised a lot of people here I think with how much he developed during his stint with the Rangers. Was a great team leader who came to play every night - I really liked watching him play. So just wanted an update on how he's doing.....
IN THE HEARTS OF MEN
BIG shot from the point and does have that offensive upside. he is getting up there in age now (i think 25)and with an influx of youth coming up the organization Emelin, valatenko, obryne.... plus guys ahead of him now like jancevski, cote(injury porne) i think he has not grabbed the bull by the horns and made the best of his chance. *****believe me this whole bulldog crop of defence looks a whole lot better right now since that 19 year old went between the pipes. They barely sqeezed into the playoffs and now price has taken everybody for a great ride. Come on, 40+ shots a game in his last 3 alone and were the ones popping in 4 goals on counter attacks and PP. Lever himself asked the D to push up more because the staff has so much confidence Price can make that big save and has shown he can bail them out time after time. This Calder cup if won belongs to Carey Price, the rest of the team can have it for the day! ShortHanded
I think, just based on last year, that Cote will be the guy who's brought up from Hamilton last year. You're right, he's injury prone, but he's the guy who almost made it out of camp last fall, except he got that injury... and didn't he get a call-up at one point? None of these other guys saw minutes with the big team at all. I haven't watched the bull dogs at all this year, so I can't make a judgement on which D is closest, but based on Habs' brass decision, I suspect if Emelin can't come over, it'll be Cote that we see (unless it's a big trade and we bring in another d with prior NHL experience instead)... kaos
Cote, Jancevski and Biron are all career minor leaguers and will never see any significant time in the NHL. O'Bryne and Emelin are the future, but O'Bryne needs are year of seasoning in Hamilton and Emelin hasn't even played in North America yet, so he probably needs atleast a year in Hamilton. The Habs need to sign an unrestricted free agent defensman to help fill out there roster. Or must do it via a trade
