Great. Thanks!

So we have to keep $3.5M open for Price (in case he makes the team and reaches his bonuses) we have to give Ryder a raise (@#$%^ Ryder!!!) Plex will end up with the same deal as Higgins and Komi so

$1.7 plex

$3M for Ryder???

$3.5 for Price, unless they get a good deal (yeah that's you Marleau $4.5 M) in a trade and send Price to the dogs no matter what.

We have roughly $3M left.

Gainey is done signing players then.

They will be lucky to get Ryder for $3M, thanks to the Horton signing. I've been hoping gainey packages Ryder and either Dandy or Bouillon for a true top 3 d-man or toptwo centre (i.e Marleau). With the signing of Smolinski i doubt that will happen unless Pleks is moved and i'd rather have pleks over Smolinski any day.

Sorry..what has Price to do here? or maybe I got the wrong Price...

but if anyone is implying Price will make the team next season? its only because we traded Huet. not Halak .They already said if Price is making the team its not to warm a bench. he should and will be Hamilton next season a full AHL season is needed before rushing him to the NHL. we still have room for one more UFA either a winger if a centre is coming via trade and if not a UFA centre Yashin unfortunately.... were done UFA D's the next D is coming through trade

His salary plus bonuses total 2.2 million, not 3.5 million.

I stand corrected, and it works better

As for Ryder... I pray we trade him.

The Islanders need to spend around $13M right now just to reach the NHL cap Minimum...do they have anything we want (prospects not their crappy players ha ha) for Ryder?

Am I the only person who is unimpressed with these moves? wacko.gif

A big longterm deal for Roman Hamrlik? Why? Is he worth it? Can he still contribute? The jury's out on all fronts. His mobility is down, he's old and his offense is in major decline, he looked better playing with Phaneuf. Why not give Souray a similar contract? I'd take him over Hamrlik any day of the week. I'd take Scott Hannan over both.

As for Smolinski, decent enough but if this is the promised second line centre, Gainey's got some explaining to do.

Shoot me, but I'm not drinking the Kool Aid on this one. Option F again, hope it doesn't bite the Habs in the rear yet again.

well maybe there is a reason why people don't want to come here. (the big names) as that article about Roman Hamrlik said on tsn, the players around the league know what a fish in a fish bowl Montreal is. I think that has something to do with it.

Hamrlik's contract is THE WORST contract I've seen handed out this summer. He's getting more than Kubina, and he's no better than Kubina. He's also older... 37 years old making $5.5m?

This was our most important off-season and Gainey has failed miserably. There's no other way to put it.

Smolinski? Why the hell didn't we just re-sign Bonk? Bonk is better than Smoke. There's a reason he always gets traded. The deal itself isn't an albatross because it's only 1 year, but it's completely meaningless and means we're locked in to another make-shift checking line. Honestly, we could have kept Bonk & Johnson and at least had some chemistry going forward rather than try and start from scratch again.

If you can't sell Montreal to hockey talent, then you probably can't sell fast food to fat kids. Gainey's lost his touch.

hamrlik isn't worth that contract... holy sh!t .... 4 mil/season maybe more like it

IMO you are wrong about that. I have watched him in the west for years, and Hamilik does not get the credit he deserves. To be honest, I would rather see Hammer and Smolinski than Souray and Bonk. Smolinski will work hard. Granted he will be on the checking line, but I think that our 5 on 5 production may improve this year.

Watching the Habs 5 on 5 last year was pathetic. Carbo had them collapse out of the neutral zone and into the defensive zone cuz he knew that our D was too weak to recover from a mistake in the neutral zone. Hammer is a better all round D man than Souray. We now have a number 2 D man which we haven't had for a long time. Souray is a PP specialist not a top 2 D man. Rivet, Shelly, and even Komi cannot be called number 2 D men at this point. I know that Komi will be our star D man soon though. Hammer cost a little more than I would have liked, but there is some cash left over for trades if the Habs have a good season.

i agree with you...

not everything is money when you try to sign players.. you have to be a good communicator and salesman... most people tend to be brown-nosing gainey and saying he's god... he hasn't done a hella lot since he became gm... he hasn't sucked either, but i expected more with all the board hype and worshipping he gets ... you can slice and dice it and look at it from all angles but the bottomline is we did not acquire any of the big name players when we had the opportunity...

coupled with the changes other teams have made in the eastern conference it may be another playoff less year... :puke:

Once again another habs fan who wanted gainey to do something, and when he does he spazzes that it was the wrong choice.

I ask you, if he would have did NOTHING would you be happy....

When you see Souray the -28 player we had last season sign for over 6 million, when he doesnt have a season like he did with us last year would you still be pissed ? or will you be happy we got a Overall good defensmen for a reasonable price at 5.5 btw hes 33 YRS OLD ! not 37.

Now age you were freaking out about.

Shanahan look at that hes old

Lidstrom Oh my gosh isnt he in his late 30's DAMN he must suck tho....you tell me

Schneider yup once again someone who sucks

Chelios i think 45 yrs old i dont remember rly but i know hes RLY FRKN OLD.

Sillinger in NYI he had a pretty good season and hes 36 i think...

Nylander hes 34-35 with a 83 pt season....

So really you have nothing to say about the 5.5 million Hamrlik is getting.

Now on to Smolinski

Hm better offensive touch then bonk, and just as good defensivly. hes able to play anywhere we put him, hes a rental player for one year, so when Chips is ready to come up hes gone 2million for that bah im happy. Oh and picture Smolinski as a derek Roy in buffalo he isnt a scorer but he plays with talent, and montreal has talent. Gainey is looking into having a similar team like that this season.

What els would we use the 2 million for? so it can sit there with the 20 million we have free yup your right let it go to waste.

Now gainey failing badly, Honostly i got nothing against you but can i ask what your smoking?

he offerd more money for

1. Briere

2. Ryan Smyth

3. Scott Gomez

3 of the biggest UFA players...and other teams beat him to the punch. Would you be stupid enough to get married to briere with a 8yr no Movment clause, i know i wouldnt.

Then Ryan Smyth he thought we werent immediatly good, nothing can be done there gainey cant just be like oh look our team got magicly better becuase you want it to.

and Scott Gomez...look what the rangers did went all out giving him a 7.5 million dollar deal for 7 yrs..wich again montreal had a better offer according to everyone els and chose to play in the big apple.

Please think before you go nuts.

37 equals 33 + 4, I'm talking about the final year of his contract.

Hamrlik's a decent enough d-man, but he's had knee problems which have slowed him up. He played well in Calgary, but nothing to even warrant a raise on the $3.5m he was making. I compared Hamrlik to Kubina. He's a top 4 guy, not a top 2 guy. He's not a top PP guy, he's not a top shutdown guy... he's a good (sometimes very good) 3-4 guy. But 4 years and $5.5m is about 2 years and $2m per season too much.

Smolinski is whatever, but I don't even think he's as good as Bonk. Hell, Bonk once had a 70 point year so I don't see the "more offense" of Smoke, really. That won't be his job here anyways.

I wish Gainey had more creativity. This signing is a panic move just like Sammy was.

And players don't think Montreal has success in their future, guys. That's part of the reason they aren't coming. Gainey has to sell our program way better to these guys or we'll be stuck overpaying for mediocrity over and over again. Nashville was able to the last couple of years... why couldn't we? Coming out of the lockout, the Preds were a young team that finished in the 8th seed and snagged Paul Kariya because he believed in their future success. Ryan Smyth said he thought Colorado had the best chance to turn it around under his tenure than the other teams that were in the picture (NYI, Toronto, Montreal, and the Avs).

Believe me... I've given this plenty of thought. We didn't improve and we obtained another albatross of a contract. $5m+ the guy should be an All-Star candidate, not a second pairing guy. Hamrlik won't make the All-Star team in his tenure here.

Just because we have the cap space doesn't mean we should blow it unwisely. But that's what happened. We failed on the guys we really wanted and now we've tied our hands for future acquisitions. Hell, we could've learned from last year and waited until after arbitration and pick up some of the guys teams walk away from.

Think of it man, We would have gotten no one then we would be in the hole, then every other Player this season in the UFA was a greey prick im happy we got him even if he isnt what Souray was you dont have to have the best team to win the cup. Edmonton made the finals.

Bonk one year he had a 70pt season. just like blake had 40 goals once in his career and never again and we all know it, his home was in New york with their system.

hamrlik might have had problems but so did souray remember his wrist a hole year he was gone. injuries happen you cant say he had problems. even someone who never did can have a problem.

and face it Samsonov wont happen again. I noticed he was never like he was since the last year in Boston even when traded to Edmonton i looked at him closley wasnt like he used to be.

You got to have faith man theres nothing better we can do, and you got to stop bashing wtv we do because mainly be happy someone even signed here.

Uh, Hamrlik got 38 points last season...compared to 37 in 01-02 and 41 in 02-03. He played over 70 games in four of the last five NHL seasons (he only had 51 after the lockout, but lots of players were injured that season). This hardly signifies a guy on a huge downward arc, either in terms of numbers or health.

The comparison with Ninimaa is fatuous. Ninimaa WAS a player on a downslide - he was in the press box in Dallas, for God's sake, while Hamrlik was a minutes-eating machine for the Flames. I fail to see the comparison.

Now, I haven't watched Hamrlik studiously. Maybe the decline is glaringly obvious and somehow it's just not showing up in the numbers. But the 'sky is falling' crowd really have to do better than just point to the guy's age (33) and infer all sorts of awful things from that. Besides, 33 is the new 30 in a great many cases in today's NHL due to superior conditioning and diet.

Again, here's the TSN scouting report:

Assets Has all the physical tools every organization looks for in a top defenseman. Possesses a terrific point shot, a nasty streak (no one's metnioned that!) and great skating ability.

Flaws Doesn't always use good judgment on the ice. Can be somewhat erratic at times in the defensive zone.

Career potential Top four defenseman.

Those who expect him to be a total rock in the defensive zone may be in for a rude shock, but all things considered this sounds like a pretty reasonable signing to me. Anyone complaining about the dollars or the length simply hasn't been paying attention. If you want a UFA that's what you get. You can't whine about Bob NOT signing guys and then complain when he DOES sign one at basically market value. Sheesh.

I pretty much agree with what you are saying. 5.5/yr is a little high, but that is what needs to be done just to get anybody these days. It kinda sux0rs, but thats the way it is.

I have no idea why people think Habs are better off with Hamrlik than Souray though. Not sure how many fights exactly the Habs were in last year, but Souray was in almost all of them. I dont think Hamrlik will be anywhere near the same in that regard, and since nobody has been aquired to fight, there will be that hole.

Also, I find it odd that nobody here has brought up why didnt Sutter resign him? I bet ya its his "mean streak" Kinda like Komi, but Komi has a golden horseshoe keeping him out of the penalty box.

Smolinksi 2 mil? Kinda shaking my head over that. Bonk got $1.35 million in 2007-08 and $1.6 million in 2008-09.

I wish the Habs would actually talk with their players and find out whats up. I highly doubt Bob talked to Bonk, because at that price why not resign him. Bob probaby just assumed he'd want large $. I'll freak if Johnson signs somewhere for pennies. :puke:

The fight argument is useless. Yes Souray was the man to punch But he Hogged all the fighting chances .. Komi would stick up to anyone so would Lapierre so would Begin etc... so valid but useless point

Smolo with 2 Mil and Bonk with 1.47 per seaon arent worthy to compare... One is a one year deal the other is a two year deal. Bonk didnt wanna do a one year deal and more importantly the tax in MTL so in essence Bonk would have wanted in MTL 2x (1.45 + 20% diff) = 2 x 1.7 = 3.4 Mil which is much more than 2 mil for Slomo ( remember we got plenty of potential 3rd line 2 way kids in Hamilton)

There that answers your queries I hope

Why, because Colorado is such a powerhouse? Smyth apparently doesn't want to come here because we won't be 'strong enough in the immediate future.' Did he happen to notice that the Avs have no goalie and sucked ass last season?

*stumbles across this gem of a post*

I'd be careful knocking a team that finished better then yours. 44-31-7 sucks ass? Peter Budaj seems to look like a goalie to me if that helmet and pads are any indication as well.

I don't pretend to follow the Habs, don't pretend you follow the Avs.

Hogged? Thats ridiculous! When Colby Moore'd Saku, Souray wasnt the closest habs around. Any one of them could have went and did something, but they didn't. They all paitiently waited for Souray to skate across the ice to "hog it all" Eh. Where are Komi Begin etc when Souray isnt on the ice at the time? Let me guess, Cubes "hogging all the fights" then? Seriously, those are the only 2 I saw in multiple fights last year. I didnt see Komi in a fight last year, I I'll be shocked if I see him in one next year. All I've seen Komi do is push people, and players will only take you so seriously unless you make them listen to you. i.e. if you run my G, and i push ya and say dont do it again, your more than likely going to do it again. Now if I punch you in the mouth instead of just push, you probably wont do it again (nor will anyone else on your team!!).

Well the Avs did suck till the 2nd half of the season.

Its not Smyths fault for going to a team who has players he can talk to and relate with. Personally I think thats the main reason why the Habs cant land any UFA of high significance. The Habs are basically all Euros and Yanks, and the majority of UFA's are Canadian. I bet if the Habs actually had a Canadian who was capable of being on Team Canada, they would probably have an easier time landing big name Canadian UFA's. i.e. Smyth, Arnott, Shanny, who all turned down more $ to play somewhere other than Montreal. I dont think the media is the only reason. Yashin wants to come here. Bob better be offering Selane 4+ mil for 1 year.

For what it's worth, Gaston Therrien on rds.ca believes that the Canadiens are a superior team for the signings... maybe not massively superior but a better team nevertheless...

"Dans l'ensemble, les deux acquisitions de lundi sont plus positives que négatives. Pour le moment, on peut dire que le Canadien est supérieur à ce qu'il était hier." (On the whole, the two acquisitions on Monday are more positive than negative. For now, we can ssay that the Canadiens are superior to what they were yesterday.)

Good signings... an experienced and balanced third line centre with some offense who can step onto the PP or move up to 2nd line if there's an injury. And Roman Hamrlik, a former top choice, who used to have offense in spades and now knows how to play the other end. Don't forget how many points and powerplay minutes a guy like Phanuef would have taken from him. Plus Hamrlik has a bit of a mean streak too.

ummmm, why would you want a third liner asking for a NTC. He's a 3rd liner - easily replaceable!!! If they were going to sign a smolinksi, they should have just upped their offer for Briere or Smyth.

I'll ignorthe second part of yuor post because it's just a bad argument, but as to the first part, it's called comitting to your players. Why would we trade Smolinski if he's on a one-year deal? He's a solid no-risk kind of guy for the third line. We're not taking muc hof a risk at all wit hthat NTC.

Indeed, we are in Plan F.

F as in Future.

Smolinski is an offensive upgrade on the guy he will replace (not in terms of skating, but point production). We have him for all of one year, so he doesn't hurt up-and-coming players' development. Plus I'm sure he can teach plenty of tricks to the young pups on the march up from Hamilton, or those already here (Lapierre). He is a hustler, a decent skater, a team player, seems to be a vocal vet. Smart move, we had the room and the roster spot. If Chips needs to work on his skating, as many who have seen him have said, better to do it in Hamilton than with us now.

Different kind of player than previous, maybe more the kind of player Bob wants (looking at the future, of course).

Hamrlik, looks decent. Souray was never going to re-sign here. We have a guy who is infinitely more balanced than Souray. What we lost in leadership can be replaced by Smolinski, the ever-burgeoning Higgins and maybe Hamrlik himself.

People complain that he coughs the puck up. And Souray didn't, apparently. Hamrlik is going to make mistakes, but he will be much more solid at the back. So his plus minus was inflated playing with Phaneuf? Then play him with Komi and let him skate. He will be a good influence on younger players as well, with his knowledge and responsibility.

Overpaid? Check the UFA market lately? MARKET VALUE - doesn't mean good or bad value, but what the market will bear. Or maybe we could let Souray walk and sign nobody?

Again, I feel Bob is changing the team here. He has to change the type of player we have first, and that is what he is doing. Plus, a D-man playing well until he is 37 is no rarity now.

These two moves are in no way 'panic' moves - that kind of comment is ludicrous. We are well under the cap still, enough for a trade or two (forget Marleau, I think), and we have gone a few steps to change the team's identity, in terms of younger players seeing what it takes to wear the shirt.

The Future, the Future, coming soon. These are moves that help the future.

Rarely I stand up when I watch a hockey game. But, last year, when games were tied late in the 3rd or in OT and Souray was skating toward the offensive zone, I couldn't help but rise and scream "Pass the puck to Souray! TO SOURAY" because you knew he was going to score. And he did so many times. I don't care for his defensive mistakes.

Here, practice this:

"Pass the puck to PK! Pass the puck to PK!"

PK Subban, come on down and tee it up!

What the hell is wrong with some of you?!!!!

We have all read the reports of Bob offering more $ for every big name UFA out there. Players take less money rather than sign with us! What do you want Bob to do? Very few players want to play here, for many, many reasons.

We should be happy Bob was able to sign who he did.

hehehe yeah, PK wants to make the team, he may have a chance now who knows Habs might have some hard/good choices to make at training camp?
