lets take a look at the players we have signed

forwards (10) sure bets to make the team

C koivu 4 750 000

C plekance rfa 1 500 000 / 2 000 000

C smolinski 2 000 000

w kovalev 4 500 000

w ryder rfa 3 300 000

w higgins 1 700 000

w begin 1 058 000

w latendresse 850 000

w kostitsyn 786 000

c/w maxim 583 000

total salary for the 10 forwards signed $ 21 million

3-4 forwards from this group will make the team

c chipchura 1 000 000

c locke rfa 500 000 / 800 000

c grabovski 725 000

f murray 600 000

w ferland rfa * 500 000 / 800 000

w milroy rfa * 600 000 / 800 000

w salmelain 700 000

w lathi * 850 000

so lets say the 3 with the * make the team that would bump the salary up to

23,250 000 ( 13 FORWARDS)

NOW THE DEFENSE ( 7 d men) total $ 17 850 000

1 markov 5 750 000

2 hamerlik 5 500 000

3 bouillon 1 875 000

4 dandy 1 725 000

5 komisarek 1 700 000

6 striet 600 000

7 georges rfa 700 000

GOAL ( 2 ) TOTAL $ 3 375 000

1 huet 2 750 000

2 halak 500 000

so the total salary of the team of

13 forwards 23 250 000

7 d men 17 850 000

2 goaltenders 3 375 000

1 buy out cullimore 620 000

totaL $$$$$$ 45 095 000

so that gives gainey around 5 - 6 million he can spend . here are a few forwards we could add to help score some goals.

1 forsberg 5 million ?

2 selanne 5 million ?

3 shanahan 4-5 million

4 kozlov 4 million

5 guerin 4 million

6 yashin 2 million

7 lindros 2 million

so if you sign 1 of these free agents that would mean one of the 13 players listed above would then go to the ahl and there salary would not count against the cap. so u sign shanahan for 4.5 million it would only be costing the habs about 3.8 million

so gainey we need 1 more offensive player lets go get 1 please.

That looks like it took a lot of work. Saskhab has been doing a great job with the rolling total in this thread:

You can't spend up to the cap limit or you won't be able to bring up an injury replacement, let alone have the flexibility to make deadline deals. You should assume that the team will remain at least $2 million under the limit.

Big cap allows for us to absorb a fat contract in a trade. Ryder is going to arbitration. He might get a 5 million ruling. Don't call me crazy. We've seen this before. Arbitration can BITE! BOb might trade Ryder's RFA rights, Halak and perhaps Plekanec to acquire a marquee player. I don't like the Plekanec idea. I'm not agreeing with it nor subscribing to it. Don't shoot the messenger. But it has been suggested in some forums. Spector even said the possibility is out there with regrets for losing Pleks. I have to point out that this is mostly analysis. No Pleks rumour leaving Montreal exists nor did Spector say so.

Something huge may be coming.

Welcome the the site !

The issue's I have with your math is Ryder. 3,300,000 ? 2.75 at best.

1 forsberg 5 million ? Maybe 2.5 with survival clauses.

2 selanne 5 million . I think he'll retire.

3 shanahan 4-5 million. 2.5 max. with perfoormance bonuses.

4 kozlov 4 million. Pass.

5 guerin 4 million. Pass.

6 yashin 2 million. 2 years with no NTC/NMC.

5 million for Mr. Arbitration ? This isn't the NEW NHL. it's The Hockey Horror Picture Show !!

Please Mr. Gainey....let the kids fight it out in September, then leave lot's of room for trades or deadline deals in March.

Soyez patient M. Gainey
