Habs Sign Brisebois

I've slagged the Brisebois signing pretty hard and was vilified for it, but not banned or even warned, etc.

Of course I am a doubter who hopes he has his best year ever and leads us to the Cup - who on here doesn't?

Of course this signing does not make or break the season - who thinks that, except for Brisebois himself?

Someone pointed out that bonuses count against the cap until they are met - so he is really a 1.4 mil player, if that is true, as it stands. A bit more of a chunk out of the cap - again, if that is so.

I am more like Saskhab, I fail to see what he brings to the team in terms of getting better. Maybe whoever said it was right, he is going to be the link between Carbo and vets to avoid anymore pr disasters like Rivet or Kovalev. I also think he has always been a poor player with limited hockey sense. I think he has to be matched very carefully when he hits the ice and not go up against fast players who can beat their opponents 1-on-1. He is a blunderer on O and a target on D. We'll see if it is any different this year.

Did I mention I really want him to do well?

All I can say is that for 700 K, if need be, Brisebois may have a cup of coffee with Montreal or maybe he'll be the difference in helping getting us some playoff qualifying points this year as a number 4. Based on his stats, he can do damage. Notice how the rest of the hockey universe isn't mentioning this? It's really no big deal.

With his prior numbers and what he did before he left Montreal, as far as I care, if he goes and lives in Paris all season, it's only 700 K.

Big deal.

Good job BOb :hlogo:

Folks, we can all appreciate one reason why BG brought back Brisebois with a one year contract with a low salary. That is, add an experienced d-man to the squad. BUT...

Is the current Habs defense not experienced already? The youngest guy is Komisarek.

So, what else could lie behind the repatriation of Brisebois, especially when you have a few young turks like O'Byrne, Carle, Valentenko, etc. quicking at the door? One possible answer is the following.

At the end of his career, Brisebois was brought back IMO to retire as a HABS after finding camp too difficult for his aging body. Then, BG gives him a job with the organization as assistant/associate coach in charge of the defense.

Crazy, perhaps. But otherwise, it is difficult to see how the young turks could be as motivated as they are during this week's rookie camp and or show any motivation at all during the "real" camp next week.

not that difficult to see why he was brought back. He'll contribute limited minutes on 5-5 and a lot more on the power play. Brisebois as 5/6 defenseman/pp specialist at 700K is too good to pass up. and he'll be a good influence on whatever kids make the team if they do make it. That's all there is to it.

The reason is simple, the habs d is pathetic. It has been for years. BG is bringing in competetion, people who can skate and pass the puck at the same time. How many times do you watch a game and the Habs spend 45-90 seconds in there own end and your screaming at the TV, "clear it, skate it out, do something".

The young D men are all atleast 1 year away from playing. Fisher, Valentenko, McDonough and O'byrne (although he is close).

It's time to move on. Last year everyone was fuming about how our depth D (Niinimaa) was eating up our cap bubble thus handcuffing our trade ability. BOb gets Breezer for 750 K and now we are complaining (we have 4 million in bubble room now) about that. BOb is damned if he does or damned if he doesn't regardless of what he does.

PRO:

-experienced D-man who knows the best and worst of Montreal hockey, including being a living link to the last Cup

-cheap depth and competition on the blueline

-likely to be 100% supportive of Carbonneau's system, which seems to have been an issue among veterans last season

-potentially useful asset on a PP that will be hurting from the absence of Souray

CON:

-he's Patrice Brisebois

It's a modest but defensible move. It's also a good test of whether Montreal fans have any lingering remnants of their legendary class, or whether they've just become an arenaful hooting, embittered assholes. Please God, no booing. Politely wlecome back an old and scarred Habs warrior.

Why wouldnt we want him, our powerplay could use him, remember, he was our powerplay quarterback a few years ago, he actually did quite well on the powerplay. With the lose of souray, dont you think we need a point shot? now we have two more, hammer and breezer

Maybe.....Just maybe..............................If his ice time is limited to offensive opportunities this could work. I'm more stunned than anything as I feel bad for the player as he will get Booed and probably does not deserve it now. Oh how the Leafies are laughing as Habs resign old players to retire at their cottage like Leafies do...

I am now on the "OFFICIAL DON'T PLAY HIM SIDE".

What was Gainey thinking

I doubt he will play very much though I think he and Gorges may be close to passing Bouillon on the depth chart. Last year, we lost our infamous 2nd pairing of Rivet and Souray, it looks like this year we'll lose our infamous 3rd pairing of Bouillon and Dandenault.

I hope your right on losing those 2. I have been a big Carbo supporter on this board but proclaiming Brisby the match for Hamrlik is just stupid. He has played all of 1 game since last December.

Gorges and Streit have both outplayed Bouillon and Dandy. I thought he said it was a competition. If you a better then the ohter guy and you play, that is favortism, not competition. GC is starting to look like Julien. Only playing a few players he trusts know matter how many times they fail. Oh well, maybe i'm wrong on that but what can you do. Hopefully he is smarter then me when it comes to the defense.

I have questioned BG ever since he brought breexe-by back to montreal. And once again last night vs sens it showed why I hated him for the past 10 years as he gaveaway the puck and Ottawa scored. Get used to that shit boys.

It was his first game of the preseason...

Wow.

If every player was judged only on the one glaring mistake made in last night's game, Price would be cut, Huet would be traded, Grabs would be gone etc, etc, etc....

If any of you actually watched the game you would have noticed that aside from the obvious gaf Patrice made, he played a decent game, especially considering how long it's been since he's played.

Time will tell, but some of you are so clearly set in your minds I will likely have to just put up with your short-sighted and prejudiced opinions on Brisebois and some of the other Canadiens.

I for one hope for the best, and yes I do question Brisebois' role, but give the guy a friggin' chance.

Sheesh.
