The Hockey News released their annual Pool Guide with projections for the 2007-08 season. As usual, they don’t seem as optimistic as myself, but that’s not uncommon. Here are the Montreal skaters, with their overall ranking, followed by GP, G, A & PTS.

65. Saku Koivu 77 20 50 70

102. Michael Ryder 81 30 30 60

129. Chris Higgins 78 30 25 55

139. Tomas Plekanec 78 22 31 53

152. Alex Kovalev 74 20 31 51

189. Bryan Smolinksi 80 20 25 45

201. Andrei Markov 75 10 34 44

218. Mark Streit 79 11 30 41

221. Gui Latendresse 80 22 18 40

254. Roman Hamrlik 78 8 28 36

322. Andrei Kostitisyn 72 14 15 29

400. Tom Kostopolous 76 8 14 22

419. Janne Lahti 73 9 12 21

432. Steve Begin 73 10 10 20

455. Francis Bouillon 70 4 15 19

518. Mathieu Dandenault 75 2 13 15

Here are the goalie projections, with their ranking, W, L, OT Loss, SO, GAA & SV%. It’s important to note that the ranking is seemingly based on Wins.

26. Cristobal Huet 26 21 5 2 2.61 .912

34. Jaroslav Halak 14 12 4 2 2.89 .906

Lahti 9 goals :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

I'll bet that he has 9 by November!

Kostitsyn will be better then that as well and Smolinski will be worse.

I love these guys. They are always good for a laugh!

These are realistic projections but I think we can do better.

They have us finishing with 93 points which means 7th-9th seed.

Projections are the most ridiculous thing in Fantasy Sports.

Look at Jerome Iginla in the last 5 years

63 PTS

71 PTS

96 PTS

67 PTS

73 PTS

67 PTS

94 PTS

What is Iginla's projection for this season? Is it 90+? Or is it 65+? Is it 70+?

Do you believe that the guy compiling these stats has seen every player on the roster play?

Projecting what Higgins will finish with considering they have no idea who he is playing with, how many PP minutes he gets, what line he is on...ridiculous. Does anybody who watched Higgins play last season think he is really only going to get 55 points if healthy? Come on.

And who annointed Halak the backup?

Reference last years projections with last seasons results if you ever want a laugh.

If you have access to last years predictions from THN that we can compare to I'd love to see them!

the player pts are quite realistic with a dash of optimism! no doubt about that

the Goalie numbers on the other hand (in accordance with the Habs players pts and their ranks) are telling us (1) either the rest of the league doubled its production per player pts .... which means our guys suck ass. or (2) around 30 of those game losses were by one goal and we only lost 9 of them in OT? with two SO each, a loss that doesnt count right? which = 89 pts?

26. Cristobal Huet 26 21 5 2 2.61 .912 ==> (26x2)+5=57pts

34. Jaroslav Halak 14 12 4 2 2.89 .906 ==> (14x2)+4=32pts

so we aint doing shit with 89 pts or I'm mistaken in the calcs

I have the mag somewhere. I will take a look.

I would expect more form the Hockey News. But they are essentially analyzing it like this.

Projection/Last year

Koivu (70/75) PPG - (.909/.925)

Koivu is in his prime, he will put up similar numbers but slightly less than last year.

Ryder (60/58) PPG - (.74/.71)

Ryder has essentially put up the same numbers every year. So let's put up the same numbers

Higgins (55/38) PPG - (.705/.62)

Higgins is a young player, we don't think he is an elite scorer, let's slightly increase his numbers

Plekanec (53/47) PPG - (.68/.58)

Plekanec is a young player, we don't think he is an elite scorer, let's slightly increase his numbers

Kovalev (51/47) PPG - (.69/.65)

He is what he is, he is past his prime. Roll out his numbers from last year

etc etc etc.

These numbers are ridiculous. They are no more relevant than me telling you that Kostitsyn will put up 65 PTS. Where is the projection here. They are safe. It is easier to say who would have known that Eric Staal would score 100 Pts then to say wow we were wrong with him.

If you are in a Fantasy pool. Do not use the Hockey News to prepare. There are way better Forecasters out there that actually take risks.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong but THN predicted Iginla and St. Louis in the 60s and 70s last season. Correlate that to what they did the year before and it is safe. But they both rebounded in the high 90s.

Maybe you missed the more detailed projections near the back?

If they are wrong about Kostitsyn and he makes more noise than their projections, I like this list.

I think Kostitsyn, Lahti and Higgins (to a lesser degree) will have better numbers, while Smolinski will have less. Kovalev might surprise us, but Im sure as hell not putting my money on that.

What about that time where Higgins was at a point per game pace? ;)

Higgins will score more points this season. The guy played on a bad ankle and shoulder at one point.

A healthy and determined Higgins is a dangerous one for the opposition.

The problem with these forecasters is the same problem that afflicts ALL sports media (and to lesser degree all media, period): a total lack of accountability. You can bet THN forecasters will crow about the handful of predictions they got right, but say scarecly a peep about the far larger number they got wrong - just as Jerk Todd will contradict himself 56493 times per season.

Ryder and Higgins will combine for 200+ points this season ryder will have 108 and higgins will have about 100.

Should the happen the Habs will be near top spot in the league.

Yeah. Ryder and Higgins will get 100+ points each. And Kovalev will lead the league in blocked shots and pre-game streaking, Aebischer will crack Hainsworth's record of 22 shutouts, and Gary Bettman will suit up as the Leafs' No. 2 centreman and shatter the record of 92 goals while racking up 400+ PIMs and scoring with Ed Belfour's wife.
