Pierre the Great
Should I as an international student, be involved in politics on a local and federal level? What CAN and I CAN'T do? What should I avoid? Here's the dilemmas: Okay as you all know I'm politically active I write for the school paper about guess what, Canadian politics. I need the money (20 bucks every time it gets in the paper, so far I say I'm just a kid from Vancouver) Should I not write about politics in the Student Paper? Should I get involved in the Student Union? Next there's a good possibility that I'm going to get a radio gig for the student radio station, for the news and current affairs division. (of course) Should I do the job? Is that crossing a boundary? Next I wrote to the local MLA here in Nanaimo about BC Ferries raising their rates again. Question is should I do this considering I'm not a citizen BUT I take the ferries on a regular basis and rate hikes DO affect me. Should I be doing that or am I going to get into trouble? Ugh this is so complicated, yeah I'm a student but I'm not on a visa, I'm on a permit. I'm in BC Medical, I pay canadian taxes, I will eventually give back to the community by getting a professional job after school and I'm going to work in Vancouver in the summers. I will get a workers permit. But what exactly am I? I'm not a citizen but I do everything citizens do. Pay the same taxes, everything. What can and can't I do? I don't want to get deported. help me out here.
Mont Royale
There is no basis to deport you based on the activities you've described. You and/or your views could be ignored, second-guessed, mocked, or ridiculed, (i.e. nothing you haven't already experienced here on Habsworld )... but not deported. JLP
Canada's strength is in its diversity, dissent is woven into the social fabric so no problem in fact social and political criticism is welcome (or used to be when i lived there). Go ahead, but no hate speech . . .
Habitforming
The only way you can deported because of a specific action is one of the criminal nature. You can write that Harper is full of shit in an opening line of every article you ever write and nothing will be done (maybe a polite "stop that please") but nothing major. Write what you want on any subject you want. It's less confusing then you think it is.
Pierre the Great
lol hahaha. For example I signed CUPE's petition in Vancouver on the weekend. (there's a big strike going on if you haven't noticed) I almost decided to join this huge rally for Taiwan to be in the UN. Then a couple blocks down there was the anti war anti us imperialism rally. but yeah I wrote to the MLA here about BC Ferries, people have been telling me that's not place. (but I use BC Ferries?) crazy
Athlétique.Canadien
Check out any and all university SUB buildings and university youth movements. I'd also recommend visiting the provincial and federal offices of the party you want to aid. Even if you cannot get involved they will direct you in the best way. You don't have to be a citizen to be involved. Even scrutineering is OK I believe. Be thankful you don't live in Edmonton. When the news reports a "protest" you might see 2 people at said "protest". Athlétique.Canadien
NDP doesn't have a club here, BC Liberal-scum does. Book an appointment with the nearest NDP MP. Ask lots of questions.

Pierre the Great
See: Electron and jetsniper >_> Hey, be nice, my cousin is in that club. i feel for your cousin. If he or she is an actual "liberal" they're in the wrong club. BC Liberal= Reform/Social Cred. Campbell kicked all the liberals out when he took over the party. Sadly, most people who vote BC Liberal outside of the hinterland, think they're like the federal party. i joined the socialist group. go figure eh? http://www.ppmnanaimo.com/
