What does cowboys/horses have to do with anything?

he's part of a native tribe up north bc( I think his mom's in charge). I guess horses are part of his daily life.

My rant from the other thread :)

It actually looks pretty lame

The best masks are ones that reflect a nickname or a theme. Cujo's looked good and it fit even though a dog has nothing to do with the Leafs, same with Belfour who had the Eagle's. But the Habs goalies always have something similar.

Roy's looked good, and ever since then it has been a blue mask with the logo and some lame airbrush on the sides.

T-Bo had the right idea, a jacques plante tribute. Just very poor execution.

The worst one I saw was last season when Ward put Nickleback with some bad Hurricane swooshes. BRUTAL!!

Goalies now put way to much shit on their masks. I like the simplistic shapes of the 80's like Murray Bannerman, or Steve Baker. Or 90's greats like Patrick Roy (Habs) and Mike Richter

These were actually designed and not just a bunch of bad ideas thrown together.

WTF does a rodeo have to do with the Montreal Canadiens? Why merge them together?

Why not go with one central theme?

How did that conversation go?

Hey Carey what do you want on your mask?

Canadiens logo

What else?

I don't know

Well, what do you like?

I like Bull Riders

Ok, I will put a Bull Rider with a Canadiens logo and throw in some gradients and shadows

Sounds good

Why not just put a raging Bull on the mask? To simple?

Rant complete ^_^

Your analysis is way to simplistic. I think mask like "The Eagle" or "Cujo" represent a player who only identifies with their hockey identity. Now, Carey MAY be looking to reflect a little more. It could be a reflection of his western/native identity, or it could be that he realizes that playing in Montreal and dealing with its media will be like riding a raging bull.

Personally I don't care about the mask .... but I doubt Price was just like, "I like Horseys ... could you paint me some horseys?" I'm sure there is some personal significance, and that it goes just a little beyond his own over inflated ego that has culminated in his hockey name .... a la Eagle.

Roy's mask was still the best, IMO. Also, I like that mask from the Senators goalie who had Marvin the Alien on it .... love that Marvin -- goalie sucked though.

I think it's a Bull Fighter. He is from Western Canada, i'm sure it means something to him

Ha, that's funny. Bullfighting is a Spanish sport/entertainment, where the Matador tires a bull before killing him with spears and a sword. What you see on his mask is bull riding. The 8 second kinda stuff, where a rider has to stay on a bull for 8 seconds, after said bull has had his testicles or anus zapped with a whole lot of electricity.

Those first too masks look like they should be worn by mexican wrestlers. While I agree that some masks are a bit overboard, I like Price's.

Alright, so all this "The Price is Right" stuff is going to get old pretty soon, so I figured we need something fresh.

Watching Carey in goal last night reminded me of Snoopy. Why Snoopy? Joe Cool! Price plays goal with seemingly little emotion. He moves and makes saves like it's nothing - I mean, did you see the couple glove saves he made?

Just another game & just another save. Soon it will be just another win.

Anyway, if you think I'm totally off my rocker with the new nick, that's fine :). Just trying to get creative, and I'd like to hear anyone else's idea of a new nick or something of that sort regarding our young tender.

Kinda lame, but who cares, really. It's not like the old days, with those flat masks that left a ton of room to make a powerful statement a la Gerry Cheevers. Too bad he neglected the 'Price is Right' theme, though. (I'd have gone for a version of that gigantic wheel they spin on that show, with Habs logos where the dollar values are).

In other news, does anyone else find that Price - with his mask off - looks a lot like Anakin Skywalker?

So agree. Best goalie masks were from the late 80's to mid-90's... Now you can't see anything during games. Its all a blur. Back in the days you could tell a goalie from his mask. Designs were simple but they fitted with the logo and jersey of the team. Brodeur is probably the best example of that type of mask.

Well being a Graphic designer I have been a fan of goalie masks since I was painting my own Denis Herron mask on cardboard.

Art has always been subjective, to each his own. I could care less what the signifigance is of the mask. The execution is horrible.

The themes in no way tie together. There is no correlation between the bullfighters or the logo.

Look at Jeff Hacketts mask, the kids on the side were done by a well known canadian painter which tied the themes together.

Thibault's was an attempt at taking Jacque Plante's historic act and creating a modern tribute, not the greatest execution but a good idea.

Theodore taking the Montreal skyline and having them end with twin Gargoyles.

All of these were a way better execution than two contrasting ideas pulled together by airbrush and colour tricks.

There is no signifigance to the Habs typography along the chin. It lacks strength and continuity other than the fact the Bull Rider is blue and red.

As far as the mexican wrestler reference they are beautifully done with simplistic shapes, strong bold colours and strong negative space.

Just like Patrick Roy's and Mike Richter's. You do not need gradients and extra airbrush to create a strong visual.

It is just my opinion. As a mask it looks ok, as a piece of art it is meh.

Great choices KoZed, although I prefer the Cujo model with the dog. I am totally on the same page with you on this.

Today with all the gradients and airbrushing they are almost indecipherable on TV.

I loved the simple line work and flat colours on the older masks. Brodeur's is plain but iconic.

People will always remember Ken Dryden's Bullet motif or Cheever's stitches and Bannerman's Indian.

The masks today are overdone, they need to be seen from 5 feet or they lose their effect.

Seeing as it is a sport that is seen from wide angle and in quick bursts their is no impact now.

i call him *prix-prix* since i follow the calder cup playoff...

prix = price (in french)

and since we love to double player's short name (like guillaume = gui-gui), i'm now used to say *prix-prix* when i talk about him :)

In that case let's just call him "CASH" as in money!

Our goalie is Money.........

Carolina's and Tampa are the worst I have heard on the Center Ice Package.

Montreal beat Tampa in a game they were outshot 37-25 or something and the Tampa announcer screamed

"THERE IS NO JUSTICE" as the puck slid into the empty net.

Joe Bowen on the Leafs broadcasts is unbearable as well.

I hate all the homer bull shit. Always good when an impartial 3rd party does the game.
