"Priceless" 's great, would make a great article title. But I guess it'll soon become overused.

I guess words related to the economic side of the word price:

Inflation, (Stagflation/Deflation/Recession.. depending of the situation)

Jackpot, The Banker,

Economist, Chairman-of-the-Board-of-Governors-of-the-Federal-Reserve (ok that one is not a short nickname),

Scroogy, Stingy, Avaricious,

He'll probably get called "Cowboy" because of his mask.

He is a cowboy.

So the lone ranger.

Or John Wayne.

haha, I was thinking about that too, but not sure "Ranger" would fit well here. Maybe Lucky Luke? Faster than his shadow..

Well Wikipedia already has "Priceless" and the other nicknames up there, hmm can HW do better? I been gone from North America so long I dunno what's PC anymore but, I'm guessing we steer clear of Price's First Nation heritage (unlike Pierre McGuire)? Which is too bad because "Pipes" would sort of touch on both goaltending and you know, the ceremonial calumet. (...If only this were 1970 that could be the nickname...) Also maybe avoid youth-oriented names cos he will grow up one day and we want a keeper for our keeper (woot!).

My first groggy suggestions follow, but they're all bad -- someone's go to do better so far the best we have is "Snoopy" . . . . . .. .. .

"Sir Price" (sounds like "surprise")

"Bob Barker" (cos it's stupid?)

"Butter" (cos he's smooth, and youngest player to win the Jack Butterfield Trophy)

"Snoop Dog" (he's cool and played for the Bulldogs, wait that's taken)

I will add to these later, because there is a big prize for the best nickname . . .

prix = price (in french)

and since we love to double player's short name (like guillaume = gui-gui), i'm now used to say *prix-prix* when i talk about him :)

Hah, you too?

Great choices KoZed, although I prefer the Cujo model with the dog. I am totally on the same page with you on this.

Today with all the gradients and airbrushing they are almost indecipherable on TV.

I loved the simple line work and flat colours on the older masks. Brodeur's is plain but iconic.

People will always remember Ken Dryden's Bullet motif or Cheever's stitches and Bannerman's Indian.

The masks today are overdone, they need to be seen from 5 feet or they lose their effect.

I wasnt around for the first two, but caught Bannerman... Chico Resh in NJ was nice too.

Belfour in Chicago was one of the best of its time along with Roy's. Gotta also remember that goalies used to stick with a team much longer, so a mask was much more familiar.

fuggin' airbrush is a way to say "we're not confident enough to make a bold statement with what we've got, so to play it safe we're going to make it sort of mushy..." It's like Photoshopping naked pix of your girlfriend with the "blur" tool, instead of just get a better-looking girlfriend ^_^ . Anyway this mask was probably a rush job, Price will go with a new one next season I bet.

Hockey, people are already comparing Price to Roy or Dryden...

One thing about past ex-Habs goalies greats: they weren't just good, they revolutionized their position. Vezina was more active in the game than any goalie of his era. Plante brought the mask but also came out of his net often, something no goalies did before. Dryden revolutionized the psychological approach of goaltending position. Roy perfected a technique to the point of being able to dominate games so much as to make goalies franchise players around which a team could be built.

So... where could Price fit in all this? To ask the question is to actually rethink the goaltending position itself.

People talk about the way Price handles the puck so who knows? Maybe thats the next evolution in goaltending. It's especially interesting because there's a restricted zone behind the net now. Maybe Price will be a goal scoring goalie or rack up much more assists than goalies could before. Imagine if, without the 2-zone pass offside Price could regularly send Habs forwards on breakaways with bombs usually reserved for D-men?!

Anyway, just for fun, here's the list of goalies who scored. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Nati...cored_in_a_game

He's not Lakota people, he's Ulkatcho

Since he's "Ulkatcho" nation and his glove is so good we could go with "El Catcho"

....but again, I dunno if any such wordplay might be offensive I live waaay out of the PC loop

Price the Prize (or just The Prize)

Money is good. He's a money player so that'd stick on another level too. Agreed with the poster who thinks Pricer sounds dumb. No imagination in the locker room.

Staying in the Cool theme, in NHL08 when I created Carey the play-by-play nickname I chose for him is Iceman. Make it Pr-iceman!

"Priceman" is pretty good.

"Bull" too but of course has possibilities for ridicule .. .

I'm starting to like "Punch" more too, hmmm.

"Money" communicates greed for me, whereas he seems like a modest kid -- there is the pun on "Price" but I dunno . . .

Yeah, I liked Fuhr's, Ranfords as well. The negative space around the graphics really made them pop!

Always loved Meloche, even though he helped bounce the Habs in 80

I forgot about Cujo's Trumpet helmet, I like that better than the Dog

And this Essensa classic with the Avro Arrow

Yep Ranford's quite a classic: http://www.goaliesarchive.com/masks/masks/ranford.jpg

Dion's old one is spectacular with the long beek: http://www.goaliesarchive.com/masks/masks/dion2.jpg

I didnt get to see many full-face masks. I started following hockey when cages were everywhere. Some funny like this one: http://www.goaliesarchive.com/masks/masks/low.jpg

"Money" would be a play on "money goaltender," a guy who wins you big games. Patrick Roy = the Ultimate Money Goalie. Of course, Price will become a multi-millionaire, so it works on the level of greed too. ;)

First, the Roy/Dryden comparisons are a bit much. He's played one game, fer pete's sake!

But second, if any goalie was going to turn netminders into a scoring position, it would have been Ron Hextall, who was completely radical in his approach to roving and passing the puck. No one has ever come close to that level of aggressiveness and I don't see Price doing it either.

What I saw in that one game was a goalie who might have the most astonishing economy of movement I've ever seen. In that sense, Money may be the ultimate product of the era of 'scientific' goaltending. But really, there's only so many 'revolutions' to be introduced in a game. If Price dominates and wins Cups, I'll be more than satisfied. ^_^

I like priceless.

But he needs a HW nick name too (latendresse = lats, kostitsyn = ####). Something short that everyone will call him.

The themes in no way tie together. There is no correlation between the bullfighters or the logo.

All of these were a way better execution than two contrasting ideas pulled together by airbrush and colour tricks.

There is no signifigance to the Habs typography along the chin. It lacks strength and continuity other than the fact the Bull Rider is blue and red.

Not saying I am a fan of the mask .. I'm not, only that one shouldn't jump to conclusions. All you can say is that there is no "apparent" connection between the symbols on the mask. There may very well be .... or it may just be a pastiche of what Carey like ... who knows.
