Trading Kostitsyn (or both) for Jordan Staal isn't "giving up" on them. It's an exchange of assets designed to improve the teams involved. It'd actually be a genuine hockey trade.

Trading a guy for a draft pick or prospect could be considered "giving up" on them, since it's trading a known quantity for a bit of an unknown one. But trading a known quantity for yet another known quantity isn't "giving up" on the player.

The only problem is that as of 2008 both Kostitsyns were projected to become star or near-star-quality wingers. It's pretty risky to give up two potential stars in return for one, even if that one is the long-hoped for #1 C.

Sergei was projected to be a star? I always thought he was projected to be a good player, probably a better defensive player than his brother, but he was more the Rob to Andrei's Scott (Niedermeyer reference). He didn't have the strength or shot that his brother had.

We're also talking about a guy who was drafted 2nd overall and is only 21. And top two centres are more valuable than top 6 wingers... it's why Chris Drury and Shawn Horcoff get $5-$7m when Scott Hartnell, Brenden Morrow and Milan Michalek get just over $4m.
