JLP
it's called leveraging your debt and assets. also, he didn't build the bell centre. molson did. he bought the team for $180M and now they're worth $400+M, the financing he needed to purchase the team is almost certainly paid off. capitalizm sux

Peter Puck
Yes. The alternative has failed in every society it has been attempted. Is that so? Why is it that the US is $11 trillion in debt ($7 trillion of this is government debt) and $1 trillion of it is owed to China?

Would you want to live in China? I surely wouldn't. That being said, let's get back to the topic on hand, the financial situation of the Habs. If we want to continue this particular discussion, then take it to the Lounge.

If we want to continue this particular discussion, then take it to the Lounge. I have no illusions that China is a great society. But the claim that Capitalism is doing well and in particular that all the other systems that have been tried have failed is just propaganda. It doesn't stand up to any scrutiny. I agree, we should move this discussion to the lounge, (although I don't think I want to say anthing more than the previous paragraph) but perhaps a mod should split the thread. Colin
the cold war? Fair enough. But one could make a very legitimate case that Fascism bore witness to substantial technological gains, in particular, from about 1933-1945.

BCHabnut
We could live in Cuba, where there is a doctor on every block. We would also have free prescriptions. The only downside would be the whole, "having your daughter prostituting herself to tourists issue." Other than that, great place. Probably one of the best third world counties you could want to live. I have an acqauintance who was Croatian. His father had some pigs. Any pig deaths had to be acounted for. A pig was slaughtered to feed his family, and he was extremely worried that he would be caught. "FOR Eating A Pig That He Raised!" One of my friends is Finnish. When he grew up, his aunt was lazy and wouldn't work. His cousins had the exact same clothes, cars, TVs, vacations as he did. His dad died from cancer working in a pulp mill all of his life. His aunt is still living like a Queen. Too much socialism is also a bad thing. IMHO Incentive to perform.
Colin
It might be true, but it was at the expense of 6 million jews! That may be so, but it's hardly the point of the original observation: Capitalism, for all it's fault, is the best system to move a society forward in terms of technological advancement and superior services. No one said anything about being good to people. As an addendum, if you weren't Jewish, you can make the argument that Facism granted you superior services in Nazi Germany as well. Again, just arguing the original statement. His dad died from cancer working in a pulp mill all of his life. Incentive to perform. Socialism. Jobs. Capitalism. Do not necessarily have jobs. How many poor people are there in the States and Canada? Just sayin'...

We pay alot of taxes and dont get adequate services in return. Last month, i found out that out of all the people in the province, 40% of them don't pay ANY taxes!! That is ridiculous! Habsfan
Are most of those 40% under 18? No, we are talking about the people who are considered to be of working age...that is from 15 to 65 years of age!
