HABS SEEMED TO HAVE SIGNED MIKAEL JOHANSSON FROM THE SWEDISH ELITE LEAGUE...FORMER DETROIT LATE ROUND SWEDISH PICK

"In Swedish media today... This is just some examples, there are more articles also.

FBK-star on his way to Montreal

"I am leaning towards taking the chance"

FÄRJESTADE Mikael Johansson is on the way to the NHL.

The forward has received a contract proposal from the classic Montreal Canadiens.

- It tends that I'll take the chance, "he told Sportbladet.

"23-year-old Mikael Johansson is very close to break his contract, despite two years remaining on the contract, and sign for the NHL - Montreal Canadiens club.

A one-year contract - which data is worth more than eight million kronor"

Färjestad may well lose Mikael Johansson to NHL. Montreal Canadiens star forward has offered a one year contract. "I received a contract from Montreal, but nothing is official yet," says Johansson to Expressen. (eurosport.se)

"Johansson has seen a great development as of late. A skilled player that can be used both on the wing as well as play centre. He is a good skater with impressive hockey sense and fine technical skills. Controls the puck with ease and stickhandles smoothly through traffic. Not very big, but plays with some grit and handles larger opponents well. Could improve some aspects in his defensive game"

sounds like another tier 3 player destined for the 3rd or 4th line- i wonder if you can ice a whole team with 3rd rate talent

I guess we can hope that he is closer to zetterberg, franzen and holstrom then to Kromwell.

How many more years are we going to go without a 50 goal or 100 point player???

It's not like they're signing this guy at the expense of signing a 50 goal, 100 point player. They're signing him for nothing. Why use this as an avenue to complain? This is like signing Brunnstrom or Leino last year.

Nice, cause we never really replaced Dackell and Sundstrum...

[rolling my eyes out of my sockets]

Seriously I saw this and somehow Andreas Dackell came to mind . . .

oh, you beat me by 54 minutes.

I must admit, I was 54 minutes late to work too... so no worry.

According to the Gazoo, his contract is a one-year, two-way deal worth just over $1 mil. The scouting report seems to pigeonhole him as an offensive forward with holes in his defensive game, so if he's the next Dackell - who was a PK specialist - then he is a work in progress. 34 points in 49 games does NOT suggest elite offensive talent, though.

Gainey likes depth and competition for roster spots - indeed, I'll bet that he explains last season's disasters partly in terms of a *lack* of these things - so the move is probably intended as little more than that. The logic likely being that this guy has potential and may catch enough lightning in a bottle to be a 2nd-liner, or else put pressure on the lower lines, or else be a useful project in Hamilton. You guys are right, though, the most likely scenario of all is that he putters around in obscurity and goes back to Sweden.

He was by far the youngest top 6 forward on his team. Those European professional leagues generally don't heap a bunch of responsibility on younger forwards, so their numbers end up down a bit (hence why Brunnstrom's numbers were so underwhelming last year yet everyone seemed to want him). My guess is he was getting groomed to be a top line forward for his team in the next year or so.

Doesn't mean he'll be as good as even Mikael Samuelsson or Andreas Dackell, but it's something to work with. The team definitely seems to be scouring the globe for talent right now (plenty of Russian player rumors, this guy, the Russian coach thing), so it's encouraging that they aren't leaving any stone unturned.

Franzen was never slated to score as much as he has in the NHL.

Why do people always feel the need to shit on everything like this that teams do?

On a brighter note, as everyone knows Yemelin and the habs have been talking for a bit and it looks like he will be in N.A. for next season :D

According to RDS, Swedish medias have been reporting today that Mikael Johansson has signed a one year contract with the Habs. Johansson, a forward, had 6 goals and 28 assists for 34 points in 49 games in the Swedish Elite League in 2008-2009. He was drafted by the Red Wings in 2003, but never played in the NHL. I suppose that his rights no longer belong to Detroit, but I am not sure about that. Anyhow, we'll have to wait and see if there is some truth to this news.

man, people see "Detroit" "Swedish" and "prospect" together and suddenly the forum gets a bit moist.

We'll see what he brings in training camp, but I'd personally keep the "Zetterberg" talk to a minimum.

I found a couple of references to Johansson on hockeysfuture.com. The first was from June of 2007.

"Johansson on the other hand has been improving consistently since being drafted. He was a very solid soldier for Färjestad this past season, contributing with 7 goals and 16 points in 55 regular season games. He has the skill and hockey sense, but his work ethic and conditioning needs a lot of improvement. Plus, his small stature makes it even harder to be in the fight for an NHL contract."

The second, is a brief bio on Johansson: http://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospects/mikael_johansson

Yes CC, exactly what i was thinking. I guess they are replacing the older ones with younger ones.

You have to like the fact Detriot liked him, they are gold in the later rounds.
