Here's a cut 'n paste of an interview with Gilette by le Journul de Montréal (english resume follows):

"Avec des gardiens efficaces, avec Markov et un autre défenseur aguerri capable de jouer durant 25 minutes par match, que nous souhaitons pouvoir trouver durant l'été, et compte tenu que l'attaque sera améliorée par l'arrivée de quelques jeunes, je m'attends à de belles choses."

- Gilette clearly says that they're actively looking to add another D-man that can play 25 minutes per game this summer. NICE :-)

He also says that the offense will improve by the addition of youth from the farm...

So it seems that the CH has decided that the star UFA they'll try to attract will be a D, not a foward... they're counting on the youth to improve offensively...

I guess Gainey made the same conclusion as on this forum : UFAs at the C position aren't what we need, but interesting UFA D-men are advailable...

If we are getting a star D-man UFA then Souray will not be getting signed so that is a load off my mind.

Could someone toss together a short list of the biggest names in D that are UFA's this offseason? I am a lazy bugger.

Hannan, Rafalski, Timonen, Schneider, Chelios, Poti, Sutton, Danny Markov (?), ...can't think of anyone else right now.

But the first 5 guys I mentioned can definitely play 25 minutes a night, Poti is coming off a very good season and Sutton would come cheaper than the other but will be a very solid player for the second pairing.

Thanks that was quick. Any of those other than Schneider and Chelios and we will be sitting pretty D-wise. Then address our next big center issue via a good trade and next year will be bright.

Let us hope that Muller was precise when he said in that interview that Schneider would like to play in Montreal.

Sutton/D.Markov would do now what we hope O'Byrne does in 2 to 3 years. That works too. Timonen is probably going to Edmonton.

cause it's from Ekclown land. and even the guy reporting it says he's skeptical...

it might happen, but no such offer has been put on the table as of now... these clowns are not important enough to know any news before reporters.

From Eklund I might agree with you. These other guys might actually have sources with the teams they cover...not just any NHL team like Eklund claims.

It isn't far fetched. It does fit the Isles past practices, and in light of the buyout for Yashin it likely isn't far off.

O'Donnell, or Hannan would be a good partner for Souray

if we can't keep Souray I go for Rafalski or Timmonen

good list by the way... I also think that Schnieder might be worth a look if he can come for cheap(ish)

I kind of like Sutton. Obviously Timonen as well..but I think he will remain with the Preds. Hannan would be nice depending on the contract.

Hannan and Shneider are my top 2 picks but I would seriously consider Brad Stuart..he has a good point shot, physical etc.

I believe Gainey has a quiet interest in Tom Preissing as Plan B, if Plan A (Souray) doesn't work out. Good minutes, PK, PP, nothing exciting, but effective and relatively good value for the dollars.

Timonen, Stuart, Hannan, and Preissing would all be very smart acquisitions. As would re-signing Souray.

I don't know much about Sutton. Markov would be good too, but he wouldn't help our transition game.

Schneider is a nice sentimental favourite, but obviously only a stop-gap at his age.

But my real reason for posting is to express my enthusiasm for the game plan outlined by Gilette. I sure hope this is, indeed, what the Habs plan to do.

If people are looking towards Preissing for topfour minutes they'd be well served to realize that he is nothing more than 6th D/PP specialist who is quite weak in the defensive zone.

Preissing has inflated plus-minus stats from only playing in good situations for the Senators. At the start of the season, his game was in the pits so they moved him back to the third blueline pairing so he could regain his confidence. He averaged all of 15 minutes a game the entire year, and is hardly what the Canadiens need on the backend.

As for the others, they seem fine.

This is the main reason I want Souray back, hes a great leader and he sticks up for his teammates.

Get this. This is from a blog I was reading concerning the Sharks and their want to get drury.

"One team, is conspicuously trying to free up cap space to pitch and close Drury.

That team is the san Jose Sharks.

Doug Wilson is in desperate need of a number one centreman.

Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau are #1B centres. They are the same guy. They score and they compete in the 84 game exhibition season, however, they stiffen up in the real season.

I've heard that the Sharks would be willing to part with Marleau, their Captain, and a top 4 Dman (Hannan or Maclaren) in order to create the necessary cap space needed to fit Drury. True or false, you have to respect the aggressive play on the part of the Sharks, the team that has given so much, and gotten so little in their postseason history"

Thornton and Marleau are #1B centres? WOW Drury is the new Forsberg...maybe even Gretzky!

I'd love for Gainey to relieve them of Marleau and Hannan....where do we :contract:

Careful with Marleau. His play significantly declined over the last 25+ games of the regular season; whether this was a physical injury or some other personal problem - nothing has been disclosed (and for good reason - why devalue your asset?). However, he would remain a very interesting acquisition as long as the full story (if there is one) is on the table.

Tampa could use Huet, we could use Lecavalier. With some other players you could have a deal. But i dont know about depending on 2 rookie goalies for the whole season, like some people suggested.

We'll see what happens, its great time, with all those suggestions and rumours :D

You have to read better, i didnt say Huet was proven. They were looking for a number one goalie for quite some time.

There have been several indications that the Habs want Lecavalier and maybe we now have something in return Tampa wants.

And about that Holmqvist takes them further than Huet did with the Habs is Bollocks. Huet was injured during the last period of time, and he took us the year before that to the playoffs. When Huet went down we were on a playoff spot i believe. And its not only a goalie, its most of the time the whole team. (our goalie could use better D)
