Permanent Rumour Thread

Captain? We should trade Gomez for Saku and reduce our cap hit while getting some leadership.

LMAO

I think Saku's days as captain and leader are over. An incredible person, but I get the sence he's tired and his best days are behind him. As much as I liked him, I don't think he was able to lead our team this past year.

I came to the Permanent Rumour Thread to ask if anyone had heard of us talking with the Sharks about a deal, and you're already talking about it. Eklund (sorry) posted a comment that San Jose is trying to get in on the Heatley deal but negotiations over a deal with Montreal is taking longer than they expected. If there is any truth to that rumour then there has got to be a good chance that it is Marleau (38 goals last year) that they may be talking about. Wow, that would be an amazing pickup for us! I don't want to move Halak, but if we could get Marleau then a package including Halak would be worth it. If this is true I hope Gainey signs Marleau to an extension and not wait till UFA season next year.

Any trade for a guy of Marleau's salary ($6.3m) would require us to dump Hamrlik's $5.5m salary. It wouldn't shock me to see Bob actively trying to do that (to the limited number of teams that Hamrlik has pre-approved a trade to in his contract), but it is an absolute requirement for us to do so if we wanted to land a guy like Marleau.

The Sharks are in cap trouble whether they add Healtey or not, BTW.

Neither team could make that trade. 2 teams in cap trouble can't pull anything off unless the money is the same.

Pleks, Halak and Hamrlik would still leave the Sharks capped out.

As nice as PM would be, it isn't going to happen

Hamrlik doesn't necessarily have to go to San Jose.

1) Plekanec and whoever (like Sergei K and/or D'agostini and/or Halak and/or picks) goes to SJ for Marleau

2) Hamrlik goes to wherever for a decent, cheap #4 or #5 defenceman (like a Gorges).

The D is still pretty decent, the top 6 forwards are as good as they've been in like a decade. Not to mention the centre situation. We'd wind up with TWO centers better than our #1 from last year. Combine that with the centers we just drafted and it's just about mission accomplished on that front.

We can dream!

I think Marleau would be an unreal pickup, but it always depends on what we give up to get him. Him and Gomez would be unreal. And this way, when we get to the playoffs, he'll be second fiddle to a guy who's won (twice) before, and not Joke Thornton.

PM would be a great addition but he is another huge contract. Also I'm not sure if Gainey wants there to be any question that Gomez is our #1 centre.

I can`t help but wonder if Jordan Staal is available in Pit. He is being paid 4mil a season to play on third line without any real chance of taking over on the top two. The pens also have some cap issues, so maybe they would be willing to down grade if we give them a more economic choice.

Just for arguements sake if the deal was plex, gorges, and a draft pick for Staal I would love that, and they would get some decent value players in return. I just think Staal is perfect because he is 6 foot 4, has huge ptoential, and he can play any role in our new system we could ask of him (pp, pk, checking, etc.). I`ve never heard any rumours of this, it is just my own crazy theory.

Jordan stall is the centre I had been hoping that Gainey would target before he made the Gomez trade. As much as I liked higgens, a 3 player package of a choice betwen higgens, plex and gorges/s. kost. may have been enough to get it done. It would have given us the big centre who could be a solid 30 goal/75-80 pt centre and solved pittsbugh's salary cap isseues brought on by having to guys making aroun $8.5m each.

The problem for PIT though is that they'd take on a lot more salary with those 3 than what Staal signed for an extension. Wouldn't have worked for them whatsoever.

Also for that Eklund rumour, (below) we're going to take extra salary off them? I guess Monopoly money is accepted as currency nowadays, as the Habs aren't exactly in a situation to take bigger contracts...unless they can find a taker from their own. (Isn't this how all these stupid Eklund rumours come about? Team A wants to trade with Team B but needs to trade with Team C to free up space; Team C needs to trade with Team D, and...you get the point).

The Sharks are having a tough time making the needed deal with Montreal to free up the space needed, otherwise that would be done.

It wouldn't be to bad for Pit, they also have some holes to fill. S kost for Sykora, Gorges for Gill, and Plex for Staal.

Except the fact that they've already replaced those guys with a lot cheaper options (in terms of Gill and Sykora). Not to mention the fact that I don't think we'd be able to get away with moving those 3 for a guy like Staal...

That may be true I haven't really heard much on Pit's signings. Also like I said, there is no deal in the works, he is just the guy I wanted.

But as for not being able to give up those three guys: S Kost could easily start the season in Hamilton, Plex would be replaced by Staal, and we could make do without Gorges until Weber or Subban are ready. There is also hope that O'bryne will step it up.

I hear you. They went the cheap route on the depth signings (ie: Jay McKee at $800k) rather than bringing in more notable replacements.

Would love for the Habs to grab Marleau, but not at a ridiculous cost. Halak, Pleks, and a prospect?

Although as stated before, I think Pleks will have a HUGE year for us.

I'd like Marleau too, but boy is his cap situation iffy. $6.3 M this year and then a UFA; considering the Habs are likely maxed out even for next season in terms of UFA's because of their spending spree this year, that's a pretty penny to pay for most likely a 1-year rental.

i think we could get stall out of pit, but it would cost a lot more then you guys think....they wouldnt what Pleks, because they got 2 top C...

i think they would asked for subban or weber, chips(replace stall), and kost.

In my opinion the only guys who should be untouchable for trades are Price, Subban, Lapierre and maybe A Kost. This is assuming Bob won't do the sign and trade with any of our new guys. That being said I would give up pretty much anything to get a guy like Jordan Staal.

The only guy who is remotely "untouchable" in a trade (if there is such a thing...which I don't believe) it's Carey Price who represents the foundation of the Habs goaltending for the next decade.

To say that Lapierre and Subban are untouchable in a trade is ridiculous...a guy who has a talent ceiling as a 3rd line C and a prospect who is a potential 2nd pairing and PP specialist are NOT exactly untouchable items in a trade discussion. McDonagh was a better prospect and he got dealt as Gainey went into overkill and offered the fridge, sink and everything else to get friggin Gomez...so how is Subban untouchable?

You really think McD is better than Subban? Maybe you missed the World Juniors last year, but Subban is a future star. Lapierre may be only a third line centre but he plays hard, is amazing defensively, can score when neccesary, and is always the one we look to to provide a spark. Subban and Lapierre are both heart and soul players who you can build an effecvetive team around.

the reason BG traded McD is probably because we have Subban.

Never judge a player by two weeks and junior stats. I have seen plenty of can't miss junior kids do nothing in the NHL.

The hype machine known as TSN has placed plenty of 19 year olds among the pantheon of greats, and three years later

the same guys were writing these players off.

Players like Martin Gendron, Brad Isbister, Daniel Tkaczuk, Carlo Colaiacovo and Anthony Stewart outperformed

their contemporaries during the juniors. So although Subban may turn out to be a great player, I will wait til I see

how he progresses in Hamilton and then Montreal before I label him untouchable.

As for Lapierre, I love the kid, but 3rd line players are not irreplaceable.

My defintion of untouchable is if a team calls you up and offers you a deal, who would give you the most pain to give up.

If San Jose called and said I will trade you Marleau for Subban with no salary cap concerns, do you do it?

If they did the same thing for Lapierre, would you do it?

If they called and asked for Price straight up, would you do it?

The answers are yes, yes and no.

Price is the only thouroughbread with superstar potential, and the only player who scares the hell out of you

should you deal him and he reaches that potential.

Just like in the HWL, let's be honest, no one is truly untouchable. The fact is that anyone, for the right price, can be moved. To label players as untouchable is nothing more than saying they're a little harder to get. Unless Price and Bob are best friends and Bob isn't going anywhere anytime soon, even he can be moved.
