No room for Gill Sask?

I really would rather Gill than Hamrlik, I'd prefer Hammer to Spacek, but with one more year Spacey likely isn't going anywheres.

I'd rather Hamrlik than Gill. Gill's a specialist. Hamrlik plays a complete game. I like Gill, but there isn't much room for him.

Actually, I didn't even includ Wiz. It'd be nice if we could fit him in. Still not used to him at this point.

Well I am not saying I want Kovalev back, I'm just saying that I am open to the idea. I don't understand how you can say that a fully motivated Kovalev would only get 40 points. Ottawa as a whole is struggling to score, that's like saying Kovalchuk is done because Jersey sucks this year and doesn't have alot of points(yes, I acknowledge the age gap). And you also value him around $1 million not based on past performance....but yet you came up with that figure based on this year. In conclusion I would definitely prefer a Gagne or Connolly via UFA or resign Hamrlik at a reduced rate, or just fill spots with prospects.

I had noted this in one of the earlier messages, but Kovalev will be 38 next season. No matter how good a player is, they start to fall off when they get older obviously. Couple that with the fact the Habs employ an up-tempo system that he can't fit into, and he becomes basically a bottom 6 player who sees PP time. Those types of players are good for about 40 points or so (that's how I came up with the number). The $1 million figure is based on about what he'd be worth in this system plus the fact he's dogged it for 2 years now. The question becomes, as you've noted, is it better to bring a youngster along and get maybe a little less production out of that spot on the roster for better long term gain? Like you, I'd say yes.

I would have to say that tearing his ACL must have played a significant part in Kovalev's decline as well. Kovy's game was never built on speed, but at his age, that kind of injury certainly won't help his effort (or lack thereof).

We've got Spacek for one more year though.

We actually have a lot of D depth when everybody's healthy. I wouldn't mind having the exact same D next season. Of course, this would require us to re-sign all four UFA which doesn't happen often.

What do you guys think about Dustin Penner? He has one more year at $4.25M. He's 29 and on pace for another 60-point (30G-30A) season. He could be the missing winger that Plex and Cammy need on their line. He's got size, decent speed and skill. In my mind he's worth the extra mil over Kostitsyn.

What do you think it would take to pry him out of Edmonton?

Considering that this was the most contraversial offer letter in NHL history, (arguably par with Kessel) I would say it would take a lot. Penner was the best player on the team last year, and is a key guy there. It would take more than Gauthier would give, IMO. I think he is a core guy on that team. Stranger things have happened, but I don't see Penner being traded anytime soon.

Yes, but Kevin Lowe is no longer the GM anymore. Besides, that offer letter was 5 years ago. People's memory have short life spans. I constantly see Penner's name in trade rumours involving Edmonton. They're still building for the future so I doubt he's in their plans long-term. His contract is up after next season and I can't see them offering him another $4M+ per year for several years.

If the Habs could get him for a blue-chip prospect like Eller or Leblanc, would you do it?

So basically, the question boils down to, would you deal a 1st round pick (as both were) for potentially a 1-year rental...again? If I'm doing that, I want a star in return, not a good 2nd liner. That said, Penner would be a decent fit, though his inconsistency will drive us fans nuts at times.

To be honest, all our top 6 forwards have been inconsistent, especially this year!

I would do a Eller-Penner trade as well. And sign Penner to a 3-year deal. Habs will have the cap space next year, especially if they trade or let Kostitsyn go. There's not too many 6'4", 240 lbs wingers who score 30 goals anymore. Just the idea of him and Cammalleri on Plex's wings gets me excited!

I'm sure Edmonton would be all over Eller. They need a top center anyways. Horcoff, Cogliano and Gagner are not the answer. He's a good fit as their #2 behind Jordan Eberle. I think this trade makes sense for both teams, if it were ever an option.

If they can agree to an extension off the bat, then I'd be more amenable but walking into another Tanguay situation is what I'm worried about. Especially heading into the CBA year where the cap probably will be taking a tumble.

Eller for Penner is crazy.

Be patient. Give the kid a chance. Nobody wanted Price last season, now everybody loves him. Things can change in a hurry.

I have to listen everyday on this board about O'Byrne, Kostitsyn, Grabovski. The majority of which nobody cared about when they were here.

I don't want to add Eller to that list.

Yep, he has the potential to be a legit top-6 and a part of the future for a while. Sooner or later, it'd be nice to see some results though, he has had some opportunities in the top-6 as it stands. The only way I'd move him is if you knew you were getting a core piece for several years (basically what he can be).

His salary also has to be a factor. If he develops over the next 18 months into a top 6, the Habs don't have to pay him as a top 6.

In that span, yes. If he's a top-6 guy by the end of 11-12, then he'll be getting that type of salary, or around double his current cap hit. Of course if he's earning it, it's not that big of a deal. I know I'm certainly rooting for him.

I'm not giving up on Eller, I just think that Penner would be better.

For a second round draft pick---or less, probably.... Eller for Penner???!!!?? Shades of Reggie Houle. Short term thinking, poor return and with the potential to bite you in the ass for years a' la Darcy Tucker

Ek's reporting that the Flames and Habs are close to making a trade... probably means nothing, but I wouldn't mind a couple of their players and I'm sure Cammy has some knowledge as to who he would like to see join him in Montreal.

Could be AK's on the way out... just a guess though.

It's doubtful he'd get Penner money. Penner was paid as a UFA when he was a RFA. RFA salaries should typically be about 20% discounts. He'd more likely make Kostitsyn type money if he broke through in that span.

I liked his original tweet which someone pointed out to me last night, basically said something's going on between the Flames and Habs. Wonder if it might be that hockey game between the two teams today... Feaster's traveling with the team so the common thought would be that he and Gauthier could meet face to face if there actually was something going on.

I hope as usual he is wrong. I would be pissed if they traded Ak46 for Reghyr. He is the perfect example of a good pre-lockout dman who is in decline, because of his lack of foot speed and inability to help support the transition play. Last year he was probably calgary's #4 or #5 dman and hasn't been any better this year.

You don't trade a 25 goal player for a marginal 2nd pairing, closer to bottom pairing dman. AK is a streaky scorer, but is still #4 on the team scoring with considerably less ice time thn the guys ahead of him
