As for the reason the habs apparently suggesting the SHL, as a fan I would prefer to see him in the OHL ***if*** there was confidence there will be a season (although Erie, Flint and Saginaw being in the US would/could be problematic ... even more so for the WHL with Everett, Portland, Seattle, Spokane and Tri-City) ... wonder if he could be traded to Blainville-Boisbriand (???)

From Caufield's perspective, wonder if he would get more money in SHL than the the max signing bonus ($92,500?) he would receive from signing with the Habs and going the CHL route?

Players in one junior league can't be traded to another.  For him to go to the QMJHL, he'd have to sign with Sault Ste. Marie, get cut, and clear waivers.  Then he'd become a free agent and could sign elsewhere.

As for the money, I think he'd probably do a little better than that overseas while getting a better level of competition along the way.

Another opinion on Norlinder from over in Sverige

Mattias Norlinder, LHD, Frölunda HC (Montreal Canadiens)
Fearless. That is the best word to describe Canadiens prospect Mattias Norlinder. He was true to this characteristic throughout the preseason while also showing his killer instinct which is not very common among defensemen. However, Norlinder certainly does not lack an offensive upside and it was evident particularly during the game against Malmö Redhawks. Frölunda won this duel 8-3 and Norlinder scored a hat trick. Although he did not notch any of these goals during a power play, he has had a pretty big role in the first unit so far in this season. Norlinder usually plays with Lucas Raymond on his left side and they have already shown really good chemistry between each other.

But what exactly makes Norlinder fearless? It is the poise that he plays with. He is not afraid to try risky plays but he does it with such confidence that it pays out almost every single time. It is very enjoyable to watch and also effective in all three zones. When you combine these aspects with his intelligence and excellent movement, you get a defenseman that is not only good defensively but extremely dangerous offensively.

« Wow ! »

I don't take it as a slight of Caufield, but and endorsement of Norlinder.

8-10 weeks means December at best. ☹️

As a side note, Ilves has Joona Ikonen (not related) playing on their top line ...

Another prospect, like Thrower (first that comes to mind), Bournival, Bozon, , ... that will not make it to the NHL.

Quite possibly, yes. Although you can still do it later ... but we will lose him if we don't sign him, and it might be too risky to sign him.

I just watched an interview on TSN's site with Coach Leaman talking about that.  Caufield said he is focusing on improving leg strength along with his defensive game and mentioned he is working with Rob Ramage.

Relating to Norlinder, I've seen numerous impressive clips of him but wasn't sure how good he is because he seems to be able to skate right around the opposition so easily that I sorta questioned if he was playing against pylons.

Recognizing that highlight clips are by definition only good ... but this guy is piling them up
