Darche may as well stick around as the 13th forward. I think people forget he's approaching 35, so really he's starting to decline. And he was really never above a 4th line guy that could do spot duty in the top 9 to begin with.

Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves with roster decisions. If we get to the point that Diaz or Emelin is going down, we're 100% healthy which is something I'm still doubtful is on the horizon.

Great news about Markov. I just heard that he was wearing a regular jersey during practice today. Let's hope he can be back in the next 10-14 days.

Yet he plays a regular shift and gets bonus PP time......why is he chosen ahead of Cole or Eller? It just does not make sense. Even when Whie returns I am willing to bet the farm that Darche sees more ice than White. I just don't get it.

I have been riding the anti-Darche bandwagon for a long time. Sure he busts his ass, but so would thousands of other fringe NHLers if they had a shot. The guy has hands of stone and drives me crazy with his offensive ineptitude. That is fine if someone were a defensive specialist, but he isn't that either. There's a reason that he's been an AHLer until his thirties. He had a career season last year, although given PP time ahead of more deserving offensive players. His positives for being on the team include: communicating with teammates, showing hustle and hailing from Quebec.

Darche got 1 shift on the PP. Cole was out for all the rest that his regular linemates played. Cole has been a regular on the PP for a while now, and darche's time there has been dramatically decreased. All of the sudden JM gives Darche one shift out there, and we immediately question the coaching decision? Seems odd to me.Seeing as recent games say Cole get all that pp time, and even after that shift cole was back with his linemates for all the other pps, I think we'd be safer guessing that cole had an equipment issue or was banged up a little and that's why he missed the shift, rather than questionning every coaching decision. But we're so fast to get on JM we miss the simplest and most obvious explanation.

It was for one shift true however take a look at the bigger picture here for a second. The PP only started to climb the ladder from 27-28th to 20th overall when Darche was relegated back to the bench for the man advantage and Cole was put in, in his place. So why go back to a failing recipe even if it is for one shift knowing you have a kid like Eller who is just as big, goes to the front of the net and is alot better distributor of the puck.

Eller deserves a break offensively instead of being placed with left over linemates.

If Cole was hurt and you wanted to set up a new unit. Eller would be someone you put in practice and let him start to learn. But this is one shift while you wait for Cole to return. I think they choose the guy who has practiced the PP and done that role before.Let's remember another PP winger in AK46 is missing too.

Good point. You also have to consider when was Darche vs Eller last shift and who is well rested. I don't have the info, but maybe Eller was on the ice when the penalty was called...

Darche earning a 1 way contract was a horrible idea. He seems to have lost that edge and willingness. Of course that's what we see yet Martin still chose him on the PP last night ahead of Cole.

He earned that 1 way contract. The Habs won a lot of games because of his contribution to the team. To not reward him accordingly would have been a dick move.

The Darche this season is simply playing a "not helping/not hurting" game, which is fine by me for a 12th-13th forward. It's just sad that he isn't building on his performance to earn another 1 way contract.

I wasn't trying to start an anti Darche segway to the thread. Merely saying that with a healthy line up, he would be my choice to send down after St. Denis, Palushaj, and maybe Diaz. Diaz only because he is waiver exempt??? I might be wrong there. Emelin has his KHL out clause, Weber is not waiver exempt and can play wing. I like what White brings to the table a lot more than Darche. A fourth line of Nokelainen, White and Moen would be quite good, even though I am not a huge fan of Noke's game overall.

Diaz can be sent down.

I agree that Darche is becoming the 13th forward, but he gets icetime because he is trustworthy and dependable. Coaches love that kind of player. He plays the system and plays it well.

Diaz is waiver exempt for this season only. Emelin is also waiver exempt, but his issue is the out clause, like you say.

I came to the same conclusion watching the last few games. IMO Palushaj has a lot more upside and deserves to play with the big club.

If it reaches the point where Darche needs to be stuck in the minors, there is no question management can and is willing to eat a small one-way deal in the AHL. They sent Dustin Boyd down with a one-way last year.

Gomez I think they'd send down, but noone can be 100% sure, the money is so huge and there is no precedent that the Molsons would eat that kind of money. I understand if people say that the ownership would be reluctant to do it.

I see the precedent for Darche... it was just one year ago with Boyd.

Ask dlbalr about what lengths they went to to try not to pay an NHL salary in the AHL.

The Toronto Maple Leafs or New York Rangers we are not.

It should be noted that this is actually his second one way deal. He was on one last season as well, albeit at the league minimum.

There's bad memories. He cleared waivers multiple times and it was only after they couldn't find a taker for someone with a smaller one way contract that they sent him down out of nowhere (about halfway through the second clear period).

The way he has been playing in the last games, there are no chance that Gomez will be sent to the minors. He might be overpaid, but he is still an NHL hockey player.

Diaz has to be the odd man out. He has the worst +/- on the team I believe, is doing very little offensively, is having a hard team competing physically with alot of teams. Looks like Weber is trusted more at this point. I would like to see Diaz go down to Hamilton and not only learn the NA game but perhaps rebuild some of that confidence that comes with offensive production,.

If Diaz goes down to Hamilton, it will mean that we are very strong on defense.

Strong or just healthy? Hnestly on the depth chart Diaz is behind Markov, Gorges, Subban, Gill, Spacek, Campoli and Weber. I think it's just a matter of between Emelin and Diaz and given the fact we have 5''11 Spacek and Weber I hope Martin sees Emelin as a different dimension to this team.

I agree that if we have 9 healthy Dmen Diaz probably goes down for more seasoning.

I think it would be good for him too.

I wonder though, will we ever have 9 healthy D. I'm skeptical.

If it happens I could see a guy like Campoli flipped for a 3rd rounder or something too.

I am on the fence with Campoli. Sure we can flip him because it is an easy contract for another team to absorb but given his age, his ability offensively I actually wouldn't mind seeing him here past this season. I was really impressed with his play in the playoffs with Chicago and at this stage he will help us alot more on the PP than can Diaz.

Obviously, a business doesn't want to spend money when they don't have to. But there was also the fact that waiving Boyd and stashing him in the AHL meant that the team could never recall him. He'd most certainly be claimed on re-entry waivers as he'd be a depth player at below minimum wage with NHL experience. Having Boyd was great for Hamilton because he was too good for the AHL and was never getting recalled, but Gauthier's job isn't what's best for Hamilton.

Gillett was willing to bury millionaires in the AHL, and to be honest if the terms of the CBA aren't changed regarding buyouts, it is definitely a conversation that Gauthier and Molson will have to have regarding Gomez.

Remember that Gillett paid very little for the team and was paying himself dividends in excess of $80 million per year so burying a million contract was not the end of the world. Molson however paid $600 million and will have to go a long way before he is back in the black. Harder to agree to bury $8.0 million knowig you are still paying off loans.

Gillett inherited the arena debt from the Molsons, though. The Canadiens were still in the red when Gainey buried guys/bought out Czerkawski, MacKay, Audette, and Dykhuis.
