Trade Value Of: Yannick Weber

Recommended Posts

On D, New Jersey is also regularly using Foster (3:18/gm), Larsson (2:17/gm), and Fayne (1:40/gm) on PPs.

I'm sure Larsson needs to stay there because he's being groomed for the future, but I think Weber would be an upgrade for Fayne on their second unit and DeBoer always liked him.

I can see them adding a Dman, I mean I just don;t see the short handed goals against changing anytime soon. Thats the risk you have when you have a forward back there. We went through the same when Pleks was playing the point.

Personally I see NJ, LA and possibly Edmonton as the 3 possible candidates for Weber

Oh I agree.

Ive always felt that if you are putting a forward on the point, The SHG against are acceptable when that forward is making your PP dangerous. But they have 23 PPG and 12 SHG against, so if I were the Devils I'd change that... .but I doubt they will.

I fad actually posted around 2 or 3 months ago tha paajarvi is a guy I would target.

Edmonton is also a team that I think might want Gomez for his veteran presence and his declining salary vs his cap hit. As long as Edmonton is not on gomez's no trade list, I really think it would be a great fit for both teams and gomez, given the number of skilled guys he would have a chance to play with.

Paajarvi for Gomez and weber?? Could turn out to be a Sam pollack move that gets Edmonton higher int the standings this year so we can improve our draft position.

First I would like to say I would only trade him if it was a good hockey deal for a player that could at some point be a top 6 forward.

I feel our defense is our deepest position as far as prospects go, I would like to see a deal where they would package weber + picks or prospect to a team that's in need of d. For example to Edmonton for a Magnus paajarvi. For a forward with some huge upside

Gomez has no trade value. Put yourself in another GM's shoes. Weber I hope we keep, but if so will have to move 2 of Campoli,Diaz,Kaberle. You can't go through the playoff gauntlet with such a small/soft D

I would like paajarvi and edmonton could be interested in weber, I could see something like weber+ working.

Edmonton won't want gomez, they have their own high priced, under producing centre in shawn horcoff (who is signed longer than gomez). They also are a team that generally is well above the cap floor so I don't see them needing him.

Other teams like phx, nyi, colorado, etc are better targets IMO.

Weber is the number 7 or 8 dman on team that is really bad defensively. He is also playing forward. At best he is a throw in to another deal. Maybe a 4th or 5th rounder.

I think that possibly next year and for sure the next year IF AND ONLY IF gomez continues to play like he has the last couple of games, a team needing to get to the floor and looking for a salary that is lower then the cap hit (next year, i think his cap hit is $2.3M less then his salary and the following year $3.3M less), they may bite. I did read hear that Florida was interested (why we didn't move him is beyond me!!!).

Edmonton is really struggling and needs a veteran presence other then Smyth and Horcoff and needs another playmaker to take the pressure off RNH and for whatever issues we have had with Gomez's production, our the young guys (MaxPac, Subban, DD) have spoken very highly of Gomez.

Not sure what Edmonton's cap situation is - I do know they have that crappy Horcoff salary and frankly, as much as i can't stand Gomez, I'd rather have him over Horcoff. With Hemsky moving on and I think Khabibulin comes off the books at the end of next year (could be wrong), I think they would be able to absorb Gomez's salary. I really think they do need to someone like gomez to play with their kids, because as i've said earlier, the one positive about Gomez has been the good feedback he has gotten from our young kids and how they said he's helped them.

I also think that with guys like Eberle, Hall, Smyth, EDmonton needs another centre and Gomez could not only provide veteran leadership, but also replace Hemsky's playmaking ability.

I also really think that Weber will be a top 4 Dman once he leaves Montreal. With the right coaching and opportunity, I can see him being as effective or better then Liles and has the potential to be a Rafalski type of player.

Edmonton also has Belanger as a leader at C. Their centres are RNH, gagner, horcoff, belanger, plus they rwally like Lander as a prospect. There is no room for Gomez,

If they want a vet, its on D.

Oilers are also potentially the 2nd pick getting another C iN grigorenko.

Forgot about Gagner. Weren't they trying to move him. I do think they need a veteran with some skill. To me Belanger is a great 4th liner. How Horcoff got the money he did is beyond me. I think Edmonton was in a similar situation as Montreal is.

Montreal has to pay stupid money to make up for the ridiculous tax situation. Edmonton has to pay stupid money to get people to be willing to live there, but still the Horcoff contract is just ridiculous. If there is an amnesty period, that is one contract they need to buy out.

Oilers are also potentially the 2nd pick getting another C iN grigorenko.

I really think they will go for a Dman this year. You can go on drafting forwards for so long. they need a stud on Defense and i don't think they would to sorry about dropping down one or two spots and taking a dman.

I really think most people are being unfair to Weber and discounting his age, how he's been used, while willing to use the same arguments to support Subban. Weren't both of them picked in the same Draft??? Weber might have been a year earlier, but I do remember they played against each other in Junior or were in the memorial cup playoffs during the same year (getting old, losing my memory :D )

Anyway, I'm not saying Weber has the potential to be anywhere near the player that Subban does, but I don see Weber having the potential to be a #3 or #4 dman and a first pairing Dman on the PP, whereas Subban has the potential to be a Norris winner.

Look at how Weber has been used. He has constantly been shuffled back and forth from defence to forward as a 20, 21 and 22 year old. He needs to learn to play defence to improve that part of the game, but instead he is being asked to play a 4th line Dman role - that is just plain stupidity!!

I think 3 years from now, we'll all be discussing how we gave away a good Dman, if we give him up for a middle or low draft pick or a 4th liner that some have suggested. The guy is 22 or 23 years old. He has a rocket for a shot and wasnt that bad of a Dman defensively in Junior. If PG trades him for anything less then a 2nd rounder for him, he is an idiot. Even then, I'd be hesitant, I'd much rather pick up a good prospect who can make an impact sooner.

Belanger is more than a 4th line player IMO. He was the 2nd line Centre for a playoff team in Phoenix last year.

Now ideally I think he's a third liner, and not a 2nd; but he's much more than just a scrub.... and given all the other considerations, he's a better asset for the Oilers than Gomez would be.

=======================

I also don't see Weber as a 3/4 defenceman.... more of max potential of a 3rd pairing guy who can be a PP specialist as well. I really don't think he has the defensive ability to play on a 2nd pair. I saw him a lot in Hamilton, and even in the AHL his lack of strength could make him a defensive liability in the AHL.

This is the same league where Frederic St. Denis is a defensive stalwart despite the similar size.

Weber was fantastic on the PP in Hamilton, but defensively, he had major issues 5 on 5.

=========================================

As for the Oilers drafting, yes I think if they got the right package they'd trade down... but I don't think they are desperate to do so either.

They acquired Teubert last year in the Penner trade, and then drafted Klefblom at 19th overall, and Musil at 31st. They basically added 3 first round (or close enough at 31st) D men in one year. All three guys are prospects though, they may not be making an impact now, but they will.

The Oilers are not desperate to draft a D.. sure that would be ideal, but they aren't going to pass up Grigorenko to reach for a player either. If they get a good package they'll trade down, but if thats not available, you can't go wrong with two elite centres like RNH and Grigorenko going forward.

Weber/McDonagh/Subban and Pacioretty all 2007 picks for Habs, the last year they have had a 2nd round pick.

And i agree 100% that he may be one that got away and down the road a solid puck moving point producing d-man for some team, Oilers/Florida/Colorado/Islanders may be a good fit for him for a 2nd round pick or forward prospect.

But Habs are too small on back end right now and Diaz makes him expendable and a nice asset to trade to another rebuilding team by himself or in a package deal with say a Plekanec or Desharnais?

I have followed him since OHL days and would hate to see him go, but Habs dont lack defense prospects.

I think it's pretty clear that Diaz is ahead of Weber right now and, as such, it makes Weber expendable. I wouldn't be surprised to see him shipped out of town as part of a package before the deadline.

i agree partly that gomez may have some value to a team trying hit the floor but i woould expect the habs would have to take somewhat bad contract back to get any kind of deal done, and would not get much of a return. and i feel paaravi stock is at an alltime low and weber could be a nice asset to get him.

I saw Weber as maybe being moved earlier in the season but now I wonder. His low cap hit & his shot asset could have been dealt to a team that is out of the playoffs but likes the idea of getting Weber's skills at 900 K for the 2012-13 season. Perhaps as part of a package under those conditions we could have gotten a key player back to help for the drive.

But now (Unless there's a miracle) we are sellers. So, Weber is now an attractive acquisition for a contender heavily up against the cap that wants his shot for a playoff drive.

I now think that waiting on any decision to move Weber should be shelved unless the offer fits moving him. I'm stumped on what to do if anything regarding moving Weber now.

Very low value IMO. No more than a 4th round draft pick.

With most people of the opinion that he is only going to bring back a 4th or 5th rounder would you rather just keep him then?

Seriously the Habs would have like a 5% chance of drafting someone as good as Weber that late.

There's something about Weber that just rubs me the wrong way. I get an Anton Stralman vibe from him.

Funny you say that. i feel the same way about Diaz, but I do like Weber. I think he's got a raw deal here, and hasn't been developed properly

With Gill as good as gone I would love to see Gauthier try to part with Weber and acquire a guy like Sutton. I am not saying a one for one deal but Sutton would be a perfect complimentary pick up as a #6-7 type of guy. If I did this I would pair Sutton with Diaz as our bottom pairing and then giver Emelin Kaberle to work with for the balance of the season.

Sutton is the type of D-man I wish we'd keep as that spare part instead of a Campoli.

I agree on needing a Sutton style of player, big and mean and nasty, but I think he's a little on the old side.  Isn't he in his late 30s?  I really think we need a true top 4 guy, and I like Sutton's style, but I'm not sure on his ability to do that. He's also UFA so I don't bother trading anything for him even if we do want him. No need to have him this season.
