I would try and get a 1st round pick and young NHL ready player for Pacioretty. Deep draft we should try and get as many 1st as we can. What I would do is resign Pacioretty with the idea of trading him at the draft. If he wants a NTC we let it kick in after July 1st, This way we can still trade him. If we can get a top 7-15 pick for Pacioretty and a young NHL ready player then do the deal.

Pacioretty isn't signing an extension that allows you to trade him to any team

He is going to want a NTC that allows him to pick his destination

He isn't signing long term just so you can trade him anywhere

Yes but you can put in a date when that NTC kicks in like Subban contract

Subban's date was because you can't have an NTC as an RFA only as a UFA so it kicked in on the first day he was eligible for UFA

And yes you could ask for a date, but Max will never agree to it.  He can become a free agent and choose his own team.  Why would he give up that control?  The player has to agree to the contract and Max would never agree to such a term this close to free agency. Hes not going to lose control of his destination

There are four options here

1) Sign him to an extension and keep him

2) Trade him to a team where he agrees to go and is willing to sign an extension

3) Trade him as a rental

4) Lose him as a free agent

Thats it.  You aren't trading him with an extension to a team he doesn't want to go to

It's obvious we're not getting an impact C for MaxPac. Trade him for a young LD.

How do you know ❔did Max tell you that himself 🤔. If we sign max to a extension that extension kicks in July 1st when free agency starts. Which means at the draft we can still trade him to who ever we want to because he is still under his old contract.

He will ask for the retro NMC like Price did. Everyone has now learned after Subban's mistake.

He will not agree to it because he will want to avoid the exact scenario you are describing.

If you can figure this out, so can Max and his agent.  They will not want to lose the control of where Max is playing.

This is just common sense.

Their only risk is that Pacioretty could get dealt anywhere on no extension, which might end up happening if his demands stay too high. Honestly think that's what ends up happening. Maybe he goes to a team like Tampa or Nashville just as a rental. Or what I think happens: he goes to Dallas and re-signs in the summer.

Its not a huge risk to them... he goes to a city he doesn't want to go to for a max of 8 months, and then moves to a place he wants to be in.

The risk is getting the extension without a NTC and locking into a place you don't want to be in for 7 years.

Pretty sure players are ineligible to get NTC's and NMC's until their UFA eligibility kicks in.

It's why Connor McDavid's contract doesn't have a NMC until 2022-23. Or Sidney Crosby's second contract only had a NMC in it's final year.

It wasn't Subban's mistake, he was just ineligible to have it for the first 2 years of his contract.

Price got it.

(NOTE: Carey Price's M-NTC in 2017-18 was replaced with a Full NMC in the final year of the contract. Negotiated as part of the 8 year extension)

Price only got it because he was already UFA-age at the time the extension was signed.

I wasn't even addressing your post as I assumed you did the sensible thing and allowed Max to negotiate his own extension with Florida.

Thats fine

The idea that we can sign him and then shop him to 30 teams as Metallica suggests is what is not going to happen

Jacob Larsson, Jake Bean, Julius Honka....

I don't know what value Pacioretty holds now, but I mean a young D prospect is what Montreal need to target.

How about we help out Ottawa and Tampa with this Karlsson trade

To Tampa

Pacioretty

Karlsson

To habs

Palat

Pageau

Ryan

To Ottawa

Killorn

Sergachev

Tampa's 1st round pick and 2nd round pick

We then flip Ryan, Golden Knights lost some goal scorer in Neal and Perron

So

To Golden Knights

Ryan

To habs

Theodore

Palat - Pageau  - Gallagher

Domi  - Danault  - Drouin

Lehkonen  - Plekenec  - Armia

Byron  - Rose - Shaw

Theodore - Weber /Petry

Alzner  -  Petry/ Schlemko

Mete - Benn

Price

Niemi

Not to bad of a line up.

On deal #1, what are the Habs really accomplishing?  Palat is a second line guy (and arguably overpaid) while Pageau is an overpaid third line C.  Is that really what you want to trade Pacioretty for?  Isn't the point of moving him to actually fill a hole?  (That sentence factors in the following comment on the other part...)

On deal #2, Ryan has extreme negative value around the league.  No team wants to touch him with a ten-foot pole.  That's why Ottawa has kicked around putting him in a Karlsson trade because they can't give him away otherwise.  Vegas isn't going to willingly take that contract on and give up an impact young NHLer for the privilege to do so.  The more accurate depiction of his value if a team is taking on the contract would be Ryan + top prospect + high draft pick for a no-name prospect.  The fact they're willing to take a lesser return on an elite player in Karlsson to simply rid themselves of Ryan's contract should speak volumes as to just how bad his value is around the league.

If Theodore is your desired target, I think it would make more sense to try to structure a deal around an extended Pacioretty for him and bypass taking on some bad long-term contracts.  That's going to be more palatable for Vegas as well as they'd much rather have Pacioretty than Ryan.

If you want to help facilitate the Karlsson deal, I'd try to target an expiring deal like Coburn or someone like Callahan who only has two years left and then get some future assets (picks/prospects) at the same time.  You wouldn't even have to move Pacioretty to accomplish that so they could still move him to fill a long-term void.

Maroon expected to sign with Blues. maybe NJD are a nice landing spot for Pacs..

Max to Jersey for Jesper Boqvist, Yegor Yakovlev, and a 2nd round pick (becomes a first if Pacs signs an extension)

At this point I don’t think that should be a necessity.  Get the best return for the future of the club.

If if that doesn’t include a roster player so be it.
