Trade Value of: Hal Gill

Recommended Posts

In the second last article of this series, let's ponder the towering PK specialist, Hal Gill.

Some thoughts to ponder...

- Should the Habs look to re-sign him?

- If yes, what should the money be? (He makes $2.25 M currently)

- Should he be dealt just before the deadline (day before or on the 27th) or earlier?

- What teams do you think would be interested?

- What should he get in return?

- Does the fact his ice time has been dropped to that of a specialist help his value, hurt it, or have no effect at all?

The plan is for this to be on the site for Saturday, be sure to add your 2 cents before then.

Love his effort, but he is near retirement and would be happy to see Habs sign him, but as a d-coach.

I am guessing deadline day would get most for him? with some other d-men resigning with own clubs.

Hawks, Pitts, Caps or Bruins.

i would go with typical answer; get a 2nd round pick for him.

He will be depth/PK specialist d-man on a contender, so his reduced icetime lately should have little bearing on value, he has been around and GMs know what they will be getting.

As with Hamrlik, i will wish him the best and appreciate his play as a Hab; and hope he does go the way of coaching route?

I think if a bidding war is created even between 2 teams the Habs could end up with a 1st rounder or a 2nd + prospect.

He has cup experience and is one of the top 5 de men in the league at killing penaltys.

I know everyone thinks I am a little nuts thinking he can bring this much but it is a sellers market.

I'll throw this out there - among the possible d-men that are going to be moved among the selling teams, where does Gill fit? On the surface, the thought he could fetch a 1st rounder seems a little iffy but if he is the best or one of the best, does it make it more palatable? (I can't add my own thoughts in case I wind up writing this one in case anyone's wondering about my answer.)

Habs last had two 1st round picks in 2007, got Ryan McDonagh and Mr Pacioretty (thank you Craig Rivet for Pacioretty, but moreso for Gorges), if they could get a 1st rounder for Gill, i would be pleasantly shocked, but would be some sweet to repeat with 2 more quality picks like those!

That's best case scenario...but not outside of the realm of possibilities. TSN's Bob McKenzie says there are more buyers than sellers, which plays into the Habs' favour....but also, defenseman and ALWAYS a hot commodity come trade deadline. There are no shortage of Cup contenders who would want Gill.

We can only hope that Gauthier does decide to be a buyer instead!

Since JMMR called the 2nd + prospect value, I'll buy him a beer next time I see him.

If he can predict a campoli trade I'll buy him a pitcher.

Do you buy him Anheuser Busch he predicts a Gomez trade?

Are you saying you like getting Gorges more than Max Pac ??

My guess to his value is a 2nd round pick, Blake Geoffrion, and Robert Slaney. We may have to throw a conditional 5th, hinging on Geoffrion playing 40 games next season, in there to get it done.

Sorry, can't believe nobody did that already.

That can't happen. The 5th in 2013 is tied up in the Gill trade (that's the conditional pick).
