Gill dealt to Predators

Recommended Posts

PG hit a homer with this trade. The 2nd rounder was fair value, If Geoffrion grows to full potential we stole him. Throw in Slaney who even if he doesn't make it adds a ton to the 'dogs and we are way ahead in this deal. Great move! Keep it up PG and your job is safe!

It was a fair trade,Mrs Goat. And PG is toast. Geoff has 0 goals in 22 games this year.hope he pans out,but he's 24. if you like his #'s you must love the Palush/Enquist combo

You can really see how well Gill was liked in the dressing room by the Habs players comments after he had been traded. Subban especially. It kinda further proves the point that Cammi was not well liked in the dressing room since no comments like that were made after he was traded.

Remember that little note on not trashing other posters or calling them names? Enough is enough, I suggest you take some time to review the very simple rules (particularly #2) before posting again.

To others who want to complain publicly about him or another poster, keep in mind the same rules apply both ways.

Kaberle isn't a 50 point player but Kessel is all of a sudden a 35+ goal scorer.  Really, this is getting too much.

That's what you get when the point of 90% of his posts is criticizing Gauthier and Gainey. I only see his posts now when someone quotes them cause I have him on ignore, but right from the day he joined, he's twisted stats and facts merely to fit his narrative.

Management isn't perfect and I'm of the belief that Gauthier should be canned. However, lafrous wants to paint a picture that every single move this management team has made for 10 years is a horrendous mistake that has crippled the franchise, and that these guys are worse than Houle. Its simply not the case, there have been both good and bad moves.

Also Geoffrion is more than just a name to appease RDS and more than just another Ben Maxwell. He's a former hobey baker winner. He's got talent and that was seen in his callup last season for the Preds. This is a guy who has legit talent, we just need to see if we can get him to show it. He's more than a scrub with a fancy last name, he's a legit prospect. Now not all prospects work out, I know that, but give the kid a chance.

With his size and tenacity, I'd be fine with him being a bottom six winger who learns a strong defensive game and can be occasionally used on the top six. Anything better is just that. Better. People should recognize he was in a similar situation that Lars Eller was in with the Blues. Once Moen and Kostitsyn are gone from the bottom six, there will be a lot of room for Geoffrion.

Agreed. The kid's got size, speed, grit and a scoring touch. He seems to be an excellent fit with the way this team is moving forward. Some people are down playing his family's connection to Montreal but I am of the belief that playing there will inspire him. Imagine looking up to the rafters and seeing your grandfather's banner hanging there, along with your great grandfather's banner. I just read that he was very close with Boom Boom and was the last person to talk to him before he died. I think that the majority of the fan base is going to want this kid to succeed. And I think he will.

A sensible way to look at Geoffrion is as Darches replacement. A role player, energy type, who skates better than Darche. At 24, he hasn't been able to maintain a spot in the big league.

Predators general manager David Poile said he was "very torn" about dealing Geoffrion.

"If it wasn't for Montreal, the unique situation with his family, the history, all that stuff, I probably wouldn't have traded him," Poile said on a conference call. "It's extremely tough to do because of his obvious ties to Nashville.

"It was fabulous to have a local player here in Nashville."

Poile said Geoffrion struggled on a team loaded with first- and second-year players in Nashville and was still a strong NHL prospect.

I see him more as moen's replacement without the fighting.  I see him starting next year on a line with Eller and Leblanc. He'll bring the grit and hitting of moen, and play his role as a PKer too. He has potential to break out with a bit more offence, but won't really drop the gloves as much as Moen.

I hope you mean by Darche replacement you mean Darche upgrade. Boomer committed to 4 years at Wisconsin and only just turned pro 2 years ago. I wouldn't put much stock in the fact he is 24 and can't hang in the NHL. I think this guy is going to surprise a lot of people.

Geoffrion/Eller/Leblanc sounds like a good depth scoring line. I'm not sure about how well defensively they will be. If they can lock down defense, their offensive numbers should be comparable to AK/Eller/Moen this year, maybe a touch higher. If we can get a good 1st line center and Bourque/Pleks/Gointa find chemistry, we'll have a good set of forward line next year.

This is Patches first full year in the NHL. Gotta give the kids a chance to establish himself. Patches took 3 partial years to get where he is now.

All three are two way players, just young two way players.

I think I'd like to see Montreal try Louis Leblanc as a fourth line center between Geoffrion and White.

Well of course upgrade! Just don't get too carried away, that's all.

I wonder if Blake will go straight to the Hammer or if the Habs will get a closer look at him with White on the 4th line for a few games. At this point in the year, why not play the kids a bit more.

I too was surprised at the return on this. My RDS app posted the news before we knew what was coming back for him. I was telling people in the office here that it would be a 4th -- maybe 3rd round pick. But wow, 2 bodies (albeit at least one lame) and a 2nd round pick. Wonder if Moen will get us the "Craig Rivet Special" again this time around :hyper:

I bet that he is coming straight to Montreal and will be playing against the Devils tomorrow. The next ones to go are Moen, AK46, Campolli... and, possibly, Gomez. Why the Gomer? Because I think that in the proper environment, with good wingers, he can help a team trying to go all the way. Don't forget that the no. 11 has been our most effective center in the playoffs.

"Boomer" was demoted after being traded...He is now in the Hammer with Slaney..

What a waste of talent...You are basically handcuffing LL to mature as a player he is meant to be...Give the kid some players that have offensive skill...If he plays 4th line minutes, then send him to the Hammer..

Exactly. This is how the habs almost messed up MaxPac, before finally sending him to Hamilton.

Pavel Kubina was traded to the Flyers for a 2nd and a 4th. Sounds like PG hit a grad slam instead of just a plain old home run.

Not sure how you reach that conclusion. Yzerman already said Kubina will NOT play again for the TB - has been a distraction and bad influence in the dressing room. Gill on the other hand is a PK specialist, playoff shutdown dman. Based on the fact that both Nashville and Philly are stocking up for the playoffs, Gill is probably the better pickup.

The difference between the 4th and Geofferion depends on how TB uses the pick and Geofferion. The other dman was apparently a dump by Nashville.

Kubina is a solid defenseman and has a cannon from the point. Gill is probably the better of the 2 defensively, but as a total package Kubina is the better player. We got a 2nd round pick and a player that was picked in the second round.

so what, Diagle was the #1 overall pick and Datysuk was a 6th round pick. Again, who hit the home run or grand slam depends on how Geofferion pans out. From the sounds of it, he could end up being a 3rd liner or a 4th liner, while the TB 4th liner may never play in the NHL, or may well be a better player then Geofferion.

Kubina is a better player, but he has a lower trade value right now. He is in the doghouse in TB, Yzerman said he wouldn't play another game for TB. Gill on the other hand is a respected leader, one of the reasons the Habs have a number overall PK (scares the shit out of me 5 on 5 though), but has been solid in the playoffs and has been deep in the playoffs 3 out of the last 4 years.

Bottom line is that the habs need top end talent. We have been the masters of developing or accumulating 3rd/4th liners. Unless Geoffrion does prove to be a potential 2nd liner or at least a very solid 3rd liner, i wouldn't call the deal a home run. Hall Gill at the start of the year, with 82 games to play is worth no more then a 4th or 5th rounder. Hall Gill at the trade deadline for a team looking to stock up for the playoffs is worth considerably more.

Kubina playing well is worth more then Hall Gill in the regular season, Kubina not being played by a TB team starving for defenceman is an indictment on his value. When you consider these factors, IMO, Yzerman made out much better then Gauthier - certainly much better then Gauthier made out with Cammy in similar circumstances.

I see it as a 2nd which is a bit later 2nd then I hoped, along with a guy to appease the RDS/Bergeron types.

Did he really get more then anyone expected??? Hell, even Moore brought a 2nd round pick AGAIN, when most were saying he would probably cost a 3rd rounder this year.

Yes, I think he did get more than anyone expected. I think if someone were to tell you PG would be able to trade Gill for a 2nd rounder, period, you'd be pretty content with that. So the fact that he got two prospects as well is just gravy.

That said, it never ceases to amaze me how much GMs overspend at the deadline. In a lot of ways, it really is better to be a seller!

Well said and too true! This kid does have talent, if a little raw. In addition he has size and loves to play physical. What seems to be a bit of his downfall is his skating stride. That said, under the right tutelage, I think Geoffrion can turn into a solid 3rd liners for Montreal. The interesting thing was his comments where he said PG told him he'd play in the AHL "for now" but that the Habs were preparing other moves that would probably see him in Montreal THIS year.

Surprising to hear that kind of candor...but not so surprising that PG is working on other things.

So who goes next? AK? Moen (if/when he's healthy)? Campoli?
