Consider your dreams of Habs trading for Trouba back on track if this sticks!

This is the time to experiment with those types of things although I'm not sure it's the best of ideas.  Yes, Petry's a solid puck-mover but most defencemen struggle playing their off-side for prolonged periods of time.

Petry is worse on LD

Plus it leaves a huge hole on RD on the second pair.  Who plays with Markov?

Emelin?  Better at LD than RD.  Also that pair Markov-Emelin is slow.

Pateryn? Redmond? Do we want either in a top 4 role?

Beaulieu - Weber

Markov - Petry

still makes the most sense.

What about going with three more balanced pairings?  (Projected TOI in brackets.)

Beaulieu (20) - Weber (25)

Emelin (18) - Petry (21)

Markov (22) - Pateryn (14)

The differences in ice time would be made up on special teams.  On the left, Markov would play top PP/1st PK (you know Therrien will want to keep him there) which would give him more ice time overall than Beaulieu (PP2) and Emelin (PK2).  On the right, Weber plays PP1/PK1, Petry PP2/PK2, and Pateryn gets merely spot duty on the PK.

That way, Petry stays on his natural side while Beaulieu moves up but isn't thrust into a 23, 24 minute role right away.  That would ease some of the extra pressure off of him while still allowing Markov to get a bit of a drop in ice time.

Condon, Sergachev, McCarron are safe guesses. Lehkonen vs. Carr/Andrighetto... don't know where they go. Lehkonen has had a better camp but Carr is a tough nut to crack and Ghetto had a good rookie year.

In an ideal world, it would be Condon, Emelin, Desharnais, and Sergachev.

*3. Condon is not a hard cut, in my opinion.

Well under very bad circumstances he did a good job for us last year. But I agree he is the obvious cut.

I get what you are saying but I took him in fantasy after Price went down last season and I wouldn't say he did a good job for us. Just because one is thrown into the fire, this does not mean you get a pass for simply trying your best. At least not as a starting goalie in the NHL.

With all the talk about the trade during the off season which transformed our back end, I still see our offensive 4 lines as a weak spot for us when compared with some other elite teams. Good thing we have a capable back end and Price in net.

Friberg, Farnham, and Samuelsson all cleared waivers as expected.

Practice lines today:

Pacioretty - Galchenyuk - Gallagher

Lehkonen - Plekanec - Radulov

Carr - Desharnais - Shaw

Danault - Mitchell - Byron

Andrighetto - McCarron - Flynn

Markov - Emelin

Beaulieu - Pateryn

Petry - Redmond

Sergachev - Barberio

(Price/Weber did their medicals but didn't skate.)

Sergachev is expected to play in both remaining preseason games as well.

My reading between the lines (ha!)...

Lehkonen is probably on the NHL roster.

Sergachev is probably going back to junior, but is close enough to give management a tough decision.

Figuring out which other defenseman is going to be cut might as well be a thrown dart at a spinning wheel of pictures of Barberio and Redmond, and I imagine the dart misses the wheel completely because...

I think Andrighetto, McCarron, and Flynn are battling for 1 spot.

I'm really glad Lehkonen looks to be making the team. I think he has all the tools to be a solid NHLer with potential to be something more.

He had a good preseason and I really like his two way play and his ability to make smart decisions in tight areas. I think he would be good on the second line with Pleks. Also it will be interesting who wins out of Carr/Andrighetto. The waivers situation makes it interesting.

That first game when Lehkonen was on the first line with Galchenyuk and Gallagher he looked great.

The kid has lots of potential. If he does fill out the top 6,  it let's a player like Shaw play a more suiting role on the third line.

Gotta say, I'm not hating the way the top 6 looks at the moment
