My opinion:

1)LW/RW Andre Kastitsyn

Great pick. Incredible speed and skill. A guy who carried his team. I loved the reports that he worked hard even though his team would be getting killed. As long as his health checks out (which apparently it did), the Habs have a bona-fide 1st winger. He and Perezhogin are probably our future top line wingers with Koivu/Higgins. Typical AS pick but a great player who should prove to be a steal.

2a)C Cory Urquart

I'm not too high on this pick. A center who's not great at faceoffs. Not a great skater either. What he does have, though, is a tremendous shot-considered the best in the draft. He progressed a lot in point production. Considered a soft player but has stepped it up in the playoffs for two consecutive years. Might develop into a scoring line forward-I'm not too sure about it though.

2b)C Maxim Laperriere

I liked this pick a lot more than the previous one. Laperriere is young and fast and has decent size. Solid two way center. Physical despite lack of huge size. Excellent faceoff guy. Great penalty killer and also good on the PP (although I doubt he'll ever get much time there with the CH). I see him as our defensive specialist center-the guy you put out to win a key faceoff and play the final minute of a 2-1 game. He has a better chance than Urquart IMO.

3)D Ryan O'Bryne

A high risk pick. This guy is only 17 but has tremendous size and nice skating ability. Can't find too much about this guy but he's very intriguing. We'll probably have a better idea of his skills next year, as he's attending Cornell. I love the idea. He fits the mold that the Canadiens are developing: small fast gritty forwards with big imposing defensemen. Hopefully one of him or Tomas Linhart, last year's 2nd round pick, can develop into a physical presence on the blueline as a #4-6 defense.

I have him turning 19 in July... he's not 17 from what I can see.

We have 6 picks left. Tomorrow starts at 9 am, and we have the 8th pick (starts at 101st, we pick 109th) The blues picked last and took a guy I wanted us to get, Zakahrov who was a linemate of Kastitsyn's on Team Belarus, but it still should be interesting to see who we pick up. We have 109th, 113th, 177th, 188th, 241st, and 271st left. (8th, 12th, 76th, 87th, 140th, 170th in terms of total number of picks tomorrow)

What we got today.

Andrei Kostitsyn-RW 10th overall

Corey Urquhart-C 40th overall

Maxim Lapierre-C 61st overall

Ryan O'bryen-RD 79th overall

An high scoring RW that is a good skater and has speed to burn. A gamble somewhat, but pegged to be a gamebreaker. Back problems should be of a concern.

Another high scoring center that has good size but doesn't seem to use it. Can score goals, and the Habs have ex coach AV to keep an eye on him (hopefully Savard or Gainey remained friends with AV since he's got 3 of our prospects on his team now)

A 3rd line checking center that also skates well.

And a RD that is going to the NCAA next year. (new rule this year, or else he would have been an '04 pick) A very big kid on the blueline, hopefully he can skate. Komisarek, Archer, O'bryen? Thats some big boys on the right side.

A good job getting team needs, a first line scorer, a RD, and 2 centers.

You know what I want? Well, you probably don't care, but I would like a comparison of the players we drafted.

i.e:

Andre Kastistsyn - ???

Cory Urquhart - Brian Savage

Maxim Lapierre - John Madden

Ryan O'Byrne - ???

I saw the 2nd rounders compared elsewhere, but I want to know who Kassy and Burner are like.

I really hope AS picked Kassy because he knows he'll be good, and not just because they have the same first name.

I've heard a Kastitsyn comparison to Martin Havlat... It makes sense since they both have the same size and same types of skills (great speed , shots , gritty/feisty)

I have no idea who O'Byrne compares to though..

This is old stuff and I don't know whether or not if it's been posted here before but here goes:

Kings, Devils, Habs Top the DRaft Class:

MONTREAL CANADIENS

The Good: The Habs emphasized offense with four of the team's first five picks, and came out of it with loads of scoring potential--especially top pick Andrei Kastsitsyn and fourth-round steal Corey Locke. Third-rounder Ryan O'Byrne, a mammoth 6-5 rearguard, was also an intriguing selection.

The Bad:Second-rounder Cory Urquhart has offensive potential, but the 6-2 center was thought to be a third-round talent going in. Montreal could have waited on him a bit longer. Also, Habs fans are still waiting to see their next power forward selection.

The Unique: The Canadiens don't often draft clear-cut enforcers very often, so adding 6-2 left wing Jimmy Bonneau was an interesting move--especially since he was the third player chosen by the Habs out of the former Montreal Rocket QMJHL squad--along with Urquhart and promising center Maxim Lapierre.

The Verdict: Another excellent weekend at the draft table for Andre Savard, who will concentrate even more on scouting and development as the assistant GM from now on.

Grade: A

Below is a link a player-by-player review of the Habs' 2003 draft:

http://www.forecaster.ca/demo/hockey/extra...d-e23-t94#p2643

A preview: Andrei Kastsitsyn

Scouting Report: Exploded up the draft charts, following an impressive showing at the 2003 World under-18 championships for Belarus--finishing second in tournament scoring. This came on the heels of a solid performance for his country at the 2003 WJC at the beginning of the year. Has excellent skating ability and the classic shiftiness of a Soviet winger. Loves to shoot the puck, and is never shy about controlling the disc for long stretches. Has en epileptic condition that could complicate his pro career. Can get pushed off the puck, so he needs to add more strength.

Impact: The Canadiens continue to stockpile high upside talent, and adding Kastsitsyn gives the team a supremely talented winger. They did not shy away from his shaky medical history, and will probably take their time in developing the talented Belarusian. This could be the steal of the draft, health permitting.

Being rated top 3 at the draft is exactly what this team said it would be about... and they delivered.

Urquhart seems to be the most questionable pick given the round he was taken.

It'll be a while before we can say whether they were right or not.

The only thing I'm still curious about is who the Habs were targeting when they tried to trade up late in the 1st round... unsuccessfully of course.

I think the best explanation you'll get from a non-Habs employee (where's MM when you need him) is that he tried to aquire LA's final pick in the 1st round (previously the Detroit Red Wing's pick), but the asking price was too high.

From the looks of it, there seemed to be only little talk, so you can guess it wouldn't have been a package deal (picks and players for 1st rounder, pick and/or player).

And I also wouldn't have been surprised if it was something like Souray the first. Or maybe something less, like Perreault for the 1st, or Audette for the 1st. Something like that. Player for pick, straight up.

When you saw them stop bantering, and the LA team went up to the stage and the Habs reps back to the table, the conversation right before the end was something like this:

Andre Savard: "Souray for Number 1?"

Dave Taylor: "You gotta be kidding me!"

AS: "Fine, how 'bout Audette? It's a contract year..."

DT: "Hmm, not a bad offer, but... nope, not buying it"

AS: "Aargh. OK then, Perreault, but that's my final offer"

DT: "No way, Jose. Ooh, wait, how about Jose?"

AS: "No, We're keeping him. Try again in August"

DT: " Ah, screw it, I'll stick with Cech-maniak"

AS: "Fine then!"

DT: "Fine!"

AS: "I never wanted it in the first place"

DT: "Well I was just pulling your leg, I woulda never have traded with you"

etc, etc, etc.

But anyway, I like the look of LA. They have to solid lines of:

Deadmarsh-Allison-Palffy

Robitaille-Stumpel-Klatt

And adding in Frolov, Belanger and Cammalleri and the other solid rookies, a solid group of 3rd/4th defensmen (yes, Norstrom and Miller are both 3rd), and a solid reg. season goalie, I wouldn't be surprised if they make the playoffs this year, and even defeat a contender (although not COL or DET. Maybe STL or even DAL, at a stretch).

I look forward to seeing them in the Finals in '08... a 15 year anniversary of the '93 Finals. That's my pick right now.

Hell, maybe the WHA will still be around too. Double the action!
