Barberio to Waivers, Carr to St. Johns

I have to admit I didn't expect Barberio to be waived.  They could afford to carry eight d-men and have had no issues doing so the last few seasons; I thought he was going to stick around.  They needed to send someone down in order to activate Galchenyuk (who quietly was IR'ed recently to activate all the players yesterday).

I think the idea is that Barberio has cleared once, so lets get him off the books again and 7 D will be enough.

Every dollar counts come trade deadline.

Given how many injuries they had and how that drove them into LTIR and over the cap at times, they might decide to run with 22 instead of 23 for a bit, just to save some extra dollars.

Believe me, I know the cap element.  I don't think they're too worried about it though considering they're carrying their most expensive call-up in de la Rose as a healthy scratch.  They also could (should) have sent him and Carr down over the All-Star break to save a few bucks as well but chose not to.  They haven't been managing that end of the cap well as of late but better late than never, I suppose.

Who is our resident genius capologist at this point?

Obviously I know you are well aware of the cap implications, I was just putting my own speculation as to why they'd go to 22 when they have been carrying 23 for the vast, vast majority of the Bergy/Therrien regime.

It would be awesome if we could have both Barberio and Redmond down in the AHL. Would help the team tremendously and would give us some decent call-ups if need be. Unfortunately I don't think we'll get as lucky as with Barberio as we were with Redmond. I assume some team will make a claim.

I guess teams could also be looking at former Habs Tom Gilbert (also on waivers) at the same time but he's not having a great season and has a bigger cap hit.

It's a shame that we lost Barberio for nothing, I think he's an above average bottom-pairing guy.  I guess Nesterov does about the same thing, however.

Just gotta hope Nesterov is an upgrade on him.

Yeah, why would you want a lawyer interpretting a complex legal document like the CBA?

I was talking about the Capologist  side of things, seems more like an accountant type job, At least to me.

Any lawyer worth his salt in this area can do the basic math that the CBA requires.  The math isn't hard.

Interpreting the provisions of the CBA so that you can minimizes your cap hits, and properly call and recall players, properly sign players, etc... thats the trickier aspect of the job and requires legal interpretation of the CBA rules and regulations.

Yeah, definitely a job for a lawyer. I have a friend who went to law school and he now works in an NHL front office and this is pretty much his job description.
