Neech
I don't know if Pleks gets a 2nd at the deadline. His value as a depth forward is greatly diminished now by his lack of speed, and he isn't Canadian and thus lacks that 'character' that some GM's are still willing to overpay for. He still has a good reputation defensively around the league. As a 3C with 50% retained, not getting a 2nd would be a bit of a blunder. Commandant
There is also supply and demand. Teams want centres. Not many centres are available.
huzer
I know Plex is older, but is Hanzal being dealt last year to Minny somewhat comparable?

Just to add to this, the rental centremen* on teams definitely selling right now: Nick Dowd (VAN) - $650 000 Jordan Nolan (BUF) - $950 000 Jacob Josefson (BUF) - $700 000 Mark Letestu (EDM) - $1 800 000 Mike Cammalleri (EDM) - $1 000 000 *can play centre, but some are better as wingers. Sure, a couple more teams will probably decide to sell by the deadline, and a couple teams might trade centers with more term, but Plekanec is still likely going to be the best pure-centre available. Bidding starts at a 2nd rounder. Whoever sweetens that pot the most will get Pleks.

Considering Hanzal was a better player, I can’t see getting anything close to that for plex.

Hanzal also has a lot of size and people thought he could be more if he got out of Arizona. He has been a considerable disappointment in Dallas, as they expected him to be good enough to be a 2C so Spezza could move to the wing. For guys that might actually be on market you got Backlund (CGY), Bozak (TOR), Ryan (CAR), Filppula (PHI), Plekanec (MTL), Vermette (ANA), and Letestu (EDM). Plekanec, Letestu, and Backlund are the best defensively. Bozak and Backlund are the best offensively but might not be moved. Filppula and Plekanec cost the most to move unless cap retained. Unless the Blues decide to move Stastny, it's an awful selection. Teams might stand put, but that's about it. Oh, former Habs Desharnais and Eller are UFA but I doubt New York and Washington move them.

Carolina has pressure to add for a playoff run, not subtract. Calgary also seems likely to make a push. Anaheim is just getting healthy and they think they have a shot at a wildcard. Philly though, I can see them selling Filppula even if they are close to a playoff spot.

By the trade deadline some of those teams might be further out and be willing to trade them. It wouldn't take much for Calgary or Anaheim to stumble. Filppula and Plek will be the big battle as both have similar contracts, both teams will try to retain 50%, and both have similar stats. Teams will be deciding who they prefer as a 3C/4C. Notably, Filppula has a modified no-trade-clause which he might use to limit his destinations. He used it last season to nix a trade to Montreal, but he will probably be more open to spending ~3 months with any playoff contender than he was last year to play an extra season in Montreal.
