2017-18 Rocket/Beast General Season Thread

With the regular season now upon us, it's time to close off the offseason thread and get this one going.  This thread will be for all general news and notes with Laval and Brampton (although we'll still have GDT's for Laval).

A refresher on the AHL veteran rules which are likely to be a factor, at least to start the season:

(V) - Veteran, minimum 320 pro GP (AHL, NHL, European Pro) as of the end of 2016-17 [Max of 5 skaters in this category can dress per game]
(V-) - Veteran, between 260-319 pro GP [1 skater in this category can be classed as a development player]

Qualifying leagues towards the veteran GP calculation: NHL, AHL, NLA, Czech Extraliga, Slovak Extraliga, KHL, SHL, SM-liiga, and DEL.  Only regular season games count towards the calculation (which actually turns Redmond from V to V-).

been a tough start for Brampton. Been to a couple games. The Swedish goalie (Hoberg) on loan from Belleville/Ottawa was not impressive. Team misses Pacan, Vallorani, Billingsley and Venuto from last year. Have already cut Mitch Zion. Had to sign Mahle as an emergency goal tender back up when McNiven was sent to Laval. (Mahle's facebook mentions he is a labourer somewhere-bad when only a beer league guy is available). Expect to see someone more local signed this week before Wednesday.

It'll be interesting to see if Hogberg moves up now with Hammond out of Ottawa (although they still have Taylor and Driedger in Belleville).  I'm not thrilled with the Sens basically splitting the affiliation since that's taking some starts away from McNiven.  (The rest of the players I'm not as concerned about as it's not as if Montreal ever has enough guys on minor league deals to have anyone left by the time the season is six weeks old most years...)

(As I look, Hogberg got recalled to Ottawa to serve as their emergency goalie while they're in Sweden.)

Beast are in trouble. Lost 5-0 today in a school kids day game to lowly Jacksonville. Fournier's first game back and he gets in a fight just over a minute into the game showing he's a one trick pony. Not sure why I bought a partial seasons ticket package but for some reason, they did away with the flexpacks which were almost as convenient with the exception of having to turn in a voucher at the box office each game. Bad team won't do much for attendance

As it turns out, nothing will change in Brampton in net as Hammond is still with Ottawa's AHL team despite the trade; Colorado opted to loan him back there instead of putting him on their own farm team (you know you're not wanted when...).  That means Hogberg will be back with the Beast and the timeshare will continue once both of them return from their respective recalls.

Brandon Billie was backing up Dags today. His limited history is on hockeydb.com

Belleville goalie Chris Driedger (sp?) assigned by Ottawa from Belleville AHL to Brampton ECHL. Played previously for the Binghamton Sens and Calgary Hitmen

Laval has signed former QMJHL goalie Etienne Marcoux to a PTO.  He'll back up Michael McNiven (who now finds himself the starter after not even being with the team a week ago) and become the fifth different goalie to dress for a game already this season.

Well, this is good news:

Basically, Laval can shift Jerabek to the 260-320 GP (V-) category with Froese up.  Although he had more than 320 professional GP played before the start of the season, games played in those leagues while junior-aged don't count.  Once those are deducted, he checks in below 320 which puts him in that category.  That means they won't have to sit any of their veterans for the time being.

Can't wait for Juulsen, Lernout and Jerabek to be NHL ready. It will not come soon enough

or just too find out if they can cut it in the NHL. Lernout, not real great prospect, Juulsen likely more a defensively sound d-man than offensive or PP guy and a 2nd pairing guy we hope, Jerabek seems to be bit inconsistent so far and his defense may not cut it in NHL, but am curious how he will do when called up (which has to happen relatively soon, or he can opt out and go back to KHL).

But, sorry to say that majority of other teams have a better looking prospect group they are waiting on to make the jump.

If Habs are sellers (Benn, Plekanec etc) come end of Feb they can add to the 1st & three 2nd round picks they will have (Sergachev is going nowhere, safe to assume) and at least start restocking farm system.

as I was saying to Brian, I go south on vacation, and the Beast picked up their game with 6 straight wins. 5-4 comeback win yesterday on Marvel Comics day in the league. Beast had very nice Iron Man jerseys and socks while Reading had green and white Hulk uniforms. Goalie Hogberg, on loan from the Sens, looked a little shakey again and I thought he let in two softies when he went down too early. He is 6'5" and covers a lot of space and his control after knocking down the puck has to be worked on. The return of Scott Jacklin from a short stint in Denmark has helped a lot. Re the Iron Man jerseys-I believe the league has contracted with Meigray in NJ to sell all of them, unlike the Remembrance Day jerseys which were sold locally.

Brampton blueliner Willie Corrin has signed a PTO with Laval.  He was briefly with the Rocket in training camp.  With Juulsen not yet ready to return (he's very close though), they were only carrying six healthy defencemen so a move needed to be made.

Lindgren sent back down to Laval. Thanks for holding the fort, Charlie. Sorry the team can't score or play defense. Maybe next year!

He will likely get called up for his starts.

In the meantime no use having a goalie in his second pro season ride the pine.

He plays in laval.  When montreal has a back to back or other obvious situation for him to start call him up.
