In the modern NHL, it does seem that the loser point makes a huge difference in deciding which teams with sub-par win percentages may actually have a chance to make the playoffs due to an improved points percentage in comparison to their win percentage.

Every year for fun I like to see how the standings would shake out without the loser point. It's pretty fun. For example, right now Montreal would be ahead of Carolina and Philadelphia but still outside of a playoff spot. Instead, they are one point behind both.

How do last years playoffs shake out without a loser point?

Washington vs. Tampa Bay

Pittsburgh vs. Columbus

Montreal vs. New York

Ottawa vs. Boston

Chicago vs. Nashville

Minnesota vs. St. Louis

Edmonton vs. Calgary

Anaheim vs. San Jose

But the real difference comes in how 10 teams in the East had 10 points or more due to OTL. The standings make more sense without the loser point:

1. Washington 55

2. Pittsburgh 50

3. Columbus 50

4. NY Rangers 48

5. Montreal 47

6. Ottawa 44

7. Boston 44

8. Tampa Bay 42

9. NY Islanders 41

10. Toronto 40

11. Philadelphia 39

12. Carolina 36

13. Florida 35

14. Detroit 33

15. Buffalo 33

16. New Jersey 28

You need to be better than .500 to make the playoffs, and you'd know pretty early on that you wouldn't be making it based on the amount of losses you already have. Pushing 35 losses without the wins to back it up? Probably best to call it quits and rebuild for next season. Instead teams stay in the thick of it forever and teams like Toronto squeak in over better teams like Tampa and Brooklyn.

Man, we missed out on a fun Edmonton vs. Calgary series and a battle of California too.

Shaw and Morrow had a little scuffle at practise

Seems like about the first tussel since that player got traded for Weber. That guy used to fight 1/2 his smaller teammates at practice on regular basis, or so it seemed.

Not his fault if only 10% of his teamates were taller than him...
