2018 draft thread

Of course Zadina is likely pick; but,

Wahlstrom at 6th, still looks like a nice option to me;

"is a tremendous skater"

"one if best stick handlers in draft"

"shot is improving"
"pure sniper"

48g 94pts in 62games

6'1.25" 208lb

Weakness, defensive game.

Interesting to note that some of the recent top few draft picks haven't turned out very well. Nail Yakupov was maybe the biggest bust in the past 8 years or so. When Edmonton drafted Jesse P. after he fell to 4th it seems like they thought he was a steal. But compared to Matthews, Laine, and Dubois Jesse has had trouble staying in the NHL. Granted he's still young and has lots of skill and time to develop. My point is that maybe who we think should be #3 and #4 in the draft may not be the best player available. Maybe another player further down the list is the one to draft. Just a thought.

Two examples of pre-draft inaccuracies are perhaps Carey Price, supposed to be lower and arguable the best of his draft class. Anse Kopitar, drafted 11 I think, and other than Sidney Crosby was the best in his draft class. If someone had drafted him 2 or 3 they probably would have been criticized. So maybe one of the centres currently rated lower could be great picks.

Question: for those of you who follow the junior players and the draft eligible players, do you think there are any Pierre-Luc Dubois players in any of the lower ranked centres this year?

Quick went in the 3rd round of that draft and has 2 cups more then Price.  I would put Quick ahead of Price just because his playoff numbers are better plus the 2 cups.

Quick playoff stats

GP-85 / w-46 / l-39 GAA-2.23 SV%922

Price playoff stats

GP-60 / w-25 / l-31 GAA-2.53 SV%914

If we did that draft over again i would do what LA did pick Kopitar in the 1st and Quick in the 3rd. That draft set the franchise up nicely.

*quietly pulling for quinn hughes*

I was pulling for Quinn Hughes when I thought we would be in the 5-7 spot. Now I’m not sure what to think.

Zadina seems like like the obvious choice, but then the Hughes, Boqvist, Whalstrom choices could pay off hugely.

I’m still hoping we swap picks with Carolina or they miraculously pass up svechnikov ??

Looks like habs took top finn center Kotkaniemi  out for a steak dinner. They say he could go anywhere from 10-15 in the draft. I would draft at 3 then trade up if he is still there around 12-15.

Wings and Hawks did as well and seems he is more in their range than top 3.

There has been a lot of late hype on him, which I wonder if has less to do with him as a player and more about the hunger for a prized centre.

I would be disappointed drafting him at third overall. If I'm one of the teams in the 6-9 range, I'd be happy selecting him.

Thats why I say we draft at 3 if he is there around 12-15 we trade up and draft him.

We have 4 2nd round picks, buffalo 2nd pick would be a very good trade chip.

Unless Kota is available at a pick we can acquire a first rounder, I would rather use our second rounders on the centres available when those picks come up. There are a couple boom/bust picks and guys with top end speed. Not saying we'd land a Bergeron/Krejci but I'd like to take the shot.

Yeah I know I don't see us getting another top 10 pick but like I said if he is there lets say from 12-15 I would trade up to try and draft him. Could you imagine us landing Zadina and Kotkaniemi in this years draft.

I'd be ecstatic with Dahlin (not going to happen) or Svechnikov (doubtful to happen).

I'd be happy with any one of Zadina, Wahlstrom, Boqvist, or Hughes.

I wouldn't be terribly disappointed with Dobson or Bouchard.

As far as acquiring another 1st rounder is concerned, I would look to see what it's worth to San Jose (who could still be looking at Tavares as an option) to take Paul Martin off their hands.  Or Philadelphia (who has two first rounders) with Jori Lehtera.  Sharks draft 21st (which is presumably out of Kotkaniemi range), but Flyers draft 14th thanks to St. Louis' pick and have their own at 19th (which again is likely out of Kotkoniemi range).  Those picks could however put us in range for Veleno, Hayton, Lundestrom, or Thomas (if you're looking strictly at centers and not BPA).

If the Habs go for Quinn Hughes, I hope they also go for at least 3 of the most creative offensive forwards available with their 2nd round picks. Gimme some guys Drouin can just get nasty with in the offensive end. I'm talking pornographic plays that require medical attention for my erection lasting longer than 4 hours.

Pacioretty and Weber are our best trade chips right now.

Weber? YOur kidding right?

Gallagher, Galchenyuk, Lehkonen, Juulsen all would be much more realistic than Weber and Gallagher would be the #1 best, given age, contract and every coach loves his type of player.

Edmonton is the only team that has any interest in Pacioretty, that's drafting in top 10

Really, where did you hear that?

It all depends on the team that has the pick.

Not really, no team would give up a top 10 pick for two 2nds. Would take Pacioretty or Gallagher to be involved to entice someone to give up a pick like that.

A #1 goalie got Canucks the #9 pick

It doesn't matter.

The value charts are so far off on this, that no team would do it.  You are not getting a pick in the top 10-15 with 2 seconds.  Its just not happening.
