Commandant
Our first NHL contract of the UDFA signing period goes to Pat Verbeek's nephew. From Friedmann https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/31-thoughts-will-calgary-flames-trade-first-round-pick/ 4. Pat Verbeek’s nephew, Hayden, is closing in on signing with an NHL team. An undrafted free agent at OHL Sault Ste. Marie, Verbeek scored 30 goals this season — only one of which came on the power play. (Four were shorthanded.) He’s not a big man, but if he’s got the same DNA as his uncle, he’ll give it a good shot.
dlbalr
The overall upside seems to be limited but he's a good skater and penalty killer from the sounds of it. He got some votes in the OHL Coaches Poll last week too.
Meller93
Certainly not a signing that blows me away.. hope he can prove my lack of excitement wrong

If any of the signings of UDFA we see in the next couple of weeks "excite" people, then its probably that their expectations for the player are too high. dlbalr
A scouting report from 2016: Verbeek is a small, but highly energetic forward. His compete level is off the charts and is among the best in this draft class. He uses his excellent speed to ramp up the pace of the game and force turnovers. He is a very good two-way player who works equally hard in all three zones. He can play a bit of a chippy game, sometimes taking extra whacks on the opposition when he can. He has some ability to create offense. His speed in transition has lead to him both gaining chances via breakaways and setting up linemates on odd man rushes. He is one of the better penalty killers in this draft class and will block shots, get into passing lanes and take away time and space very effectively. What stands in the way of Verbeek's NHL upside is the lack of size and lack of top six offensive upside. He is a fantastic junior player and will have great impact at this level, but will have an uphill battle making the NHL because of his size and a skill set, that projects towards a bottom six role. He has the speed, compete and drive to be part of the minority who can beat the odds, and thus may hear his name called at the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. The Chicoutimi Cucumber
Lack of size doesn't bother me; lack of skill does. It's the latter that marks him, based on these reports, as a long-shot. Could be a useful zippy depth player. Certainly I'd rather have speed on the 4th line than plodders.

He's not likely to become a top 6 player. That said, when you are signing UDFAs you aren't likely to find top 6 forwards. These moves are made in the hopes to find cheap depth. Its not a game changing move. The hope is to maybe find another Daniel Carr.
Machine of Loving Grace
Let's just take a time machine to 1985 and switch him with his uncle.
Trizzak
I have no problem with a PK specialist, speedster, 4th liner with a shot, but honestly I'll be surprised if he ever plays a game in the NHL.

That would get back to happier times, just before the 22nd cup win.

How many potential 4th liners and 8th dmen and prospects to fill those position does one team need? hell, our lineup today is mainly 3rd and 4th liners and marginal bottom pairing dman to begin with. Wake me up when we actually sign someone of consequence.

I dont like bergevin, but i.prefer to wait.for.an actual bad move before i criticize. The fact remains top.6.cs and top.4.lhd are not available right now with chl and college kids. This move isnt stopping him doing.that work
Machine of Loving Grace
The only issue I have and it's a small one is that it's once again a relative of an NHL player. Like Matteau and Lowe before him, it feels like Bergevin doing favours for alumni relatives. That said Verbeek chose to come here so it's not the same unless Bergevin promised him an NHL spot or something.
EMELINATOR
Super happy for this kid. Very popular here in the Soo. Brings everything, every shift. Very shifty skater.. saw him vs. Sudbury earlier in the year.. two breakaways on the same penalty kill. Kid has some serious wheels.
Prime Minister Koivu
If he is that fast maybe him and Byron could be hell to play against. Have to admit that when I read the thread title I thought we were talking about Pat and I was ready to loose my mind

He had two 80 point seasons for me way back when (and at least 240 PIMS in each of those years) - he was more of a penalty machine for me than he was for you. At least his penalty troubles kept him pretty cheap on the cap.

EMELINATOR
MB was here in the Soo for game two vs. Owen Sound this past Friday night. Verbeek put on a show for him with two goals and an assist. Might also have been scouting centre Barrett Hayton and d-man Rasmus Sandin who have been standouts for the Hounds this season. Would love Sandin to fall to us early in the 2nd round. Great skater who loves to get involved offensively.
