2018 World Championships Thread

Recommended Posts

The 2018 IIHF World Championships are now underway and there is plenty of Hab content in this year's edition.  Okay...maybe not plenty, but some.  Okay...maybe not some - how about one?  Yes, despite missing the playoffs and having most of the team available to participate, there is one regular Hab suiting up.  Okay...maybe saying he's a regular is a bit of a stretch.

Alright, let's try this again - this year, the Habs will be represented by one semi-regular player (Jacob de la Rose) and two, count 'em, two, Laval players, one of which is likely to be let go without a qualifying offer next month (Markus Eisenschmid).  The other Laval player, meanwhile, probably won't play a single game (Charlie Lindgren, the 3rd string goalie for the US).

So, yeah, if you're looking to see the Habs in action, this isn't the tournament to watch.  If you're looking for hockey to watch during the day (at least in North America), then this is the tournament for you.

No points for de la Rose and Eisenschmid again today.  I think the IIHF site is a little off on their line numbering though - Eisenschmid was listed on the front line for Germany today while Leon Draisaitl was listed as a third liner.

Breaking news - it took more than a week but the Habs finally have someone with a point in this tournament - de la Rose had a goal in Sweden's win today.

Would you know many Habs turned down invitation to play?

Price, Gallagher, Pacioretty, Danault, Weber, injured of course but any others?

After the round robin, de la Rose (who has spent time at both centre and the left wing) and the Swedes got a #1 seed and get Latvia in the quarters.  Eisenschmid and the Germans are out and Lindgren, with Team USA, has yet to play a game (although he did get to dress as the backup a whole one time).

Even backing up is good experience for him, to play for country also, am sure McNivan wouldn't turn down an invite. Having a talented team in front of them for a change would also be a nice upgrade from the Rocket.

Jacob de la Rose is off to the Gold Medal game after Sweden crushed the US 6-0 today.  Canada and Switzerland play in a couple of hours in the other semi-final.

Sven Andrighetto scores beauty shootout goal to start off the shootout of final game...

then OEL ties it up followed by Forsberg scoring, which should do it.

What a sad underachieving bunch this was this year, holy moley, the only area they were clearly lacking was in goal, but the rest of the team's quality should have pulled them through to the finals at least..

Bet ya Bergy would take one hard look in that dressing room and conclude the attitude and character is all wrong...giphy.gif
