Whats your take on the white house championship visit???

I for one have always thought this to be the most stupid tradition in sports. Never really understood it. I think its time to say goodbye to it.

If you're a team from Washington and you win a championship you should get a invite since the white house is in Washington. But other than that I don't understand why any other sports team should.

Lately it’s also caused a crazy amount of controversy. But it goes back even to people like Tim Thomas not going because of Obama. In my opinion sports and Politics don’t really need to mix

The Tim Thomas controversy was one more media driven and Bruins owner/Mgmt srivwnz Obama didn’t revoke the invite, because Thomas didn’t attend, or tweet our absurd responses like a 9 year old who feels they have been insulted.

i have no issues with athletes using their position to take a political stand, or create awareness for what they believe in.  I for one think it’s a shame most hockey players are to afraid of rocking the boat to take a stand when at times they probably should - even if it’s to their own detriment.   In ability to go against the status quo, out of fear of rocking  the boat, is the reason why the NHL had the weakest union until the the early 90’s and guys like Eagleson were able to rip off players, while guys like Harvey who took a stand got blacklisted.  But than I was a big fan of Mohammed Ali growing up, for both his ability as a boxer and the stand he took.  I also didn’t have an issue with kaepernick - it’s too bad his peers didn’t support him when he first started his protests.

On the other hand i do have an issue with a wing but  leader of the free world who behaves like an adolescent anytime anyone criticizes him or has different beliefs than him.

The media played the race card with Thomas. Because he was white and Obama black. I find it funny now that the role is reverse and the players are black and trump is white that you don't see the media turning this into race like they did with Thomas.

Well said, sir.  Agree across the board.

Left to my own devices, I'd probably go, just to have the story of meeting Cataline to tell my grandkids. But if a single member of my team had taken a stand on the anthem, then I wouldn't go, out of solidarity with him. Not a wholly consistent position, but there it is.

If you were a black player you’d have justification not going yo the whitehouse to see a president who  basically called klan members “good people”.  I went even get into his “Africa” comments.  It has nothing to do with trump being white, it has everything to do with Trump being a racist.

Oh I know that, I just saying how the media spins it.

I watch sports so I dont have to think about politics and how divided the world is becoming.  I hate it when they blend.  Got no time for it.

The tricky thing is that they *are* blended. Under current circumstances, accepting the invitation to the White House is as much a "political statement" as not accepting it - a point that bland "I'm just a hockey player" types like Sidney Crosby are incapable of fathoming, of course.

The one problem with Ovechkin winning the Cup is his absolutely terrible politics, but what are you gonna do. I still delighted in seeing him raise that thing.

I give ovechkin a pass for his politics and beliefs, given his background and where he is from.  Not  so for Crosby, whose just afraid I Rick the boat.

I like the Crosby method myself. I don't know if he's liberal, conservative, libertarian, socialist, gay,  straight. And I don't care. It makes me happy when he makes things happen on the ice.

Is more a patriotic than political thing isn't it?

Every country has it played at international events, no matter politics of country.

Its how some athletes react that can be controversial, like the guys taking a knee.

or these guys.

Peter Norman, Tommie Smith and John Carlos

If you don't support sports and politics mixing, then you support getting rid of the national anthem.

I do support getting rid of the anthem. Just play the game. Play the anthem at international events.
