Holy moly, $750,000 fine seems extreme, surprised union agreed to that.

Me too ... that might even be more than some players make this season ... it almost sounds more like a sarcastic response to another tweet/question ... especially because of the jail part.

While the Habs may have an outside chance, the Pens are a battle-hardened group with unbelievable power at C. Of course the smart money is on them.

Still was 1-1-1 head to head last season.

A healthy CH can give the Pens some scares and even surprise them if the CH gets the lucky bounces

On paper, PIT should win but I can’t wait to see how the CH performs on the ice

That is what the government is putting in place for MLB, in order to waive the 14 day quarantine rule for players coming from the US.

In order to waive that rule and come to Toronto and play games, they need to stay in the Hotel Bubble, or else they would face 14 day quarantines every time they came back from a road trip.

And Habs kicked ass at start of last season, so think not hopeless.

That's right. $750K is the maximum fine for violating the Quarantine Act. No union approval needed.

And the same will surely apply to the NHL hubs as well.

I don’t think it will apply in the NHL after the initial 14 days, after arriving at the hub, since they would have had the group quarantine.  It’s not like baseball, where there will be continuous travel.

As I'm reading through the MOU to see what some of the contract rules and whatnot are (because what better way could one spend a Friday night?), I find myself amused that there is actually a section in there where players can now receive two routine dental checkup visits per year instead one (section 17 on page 14).  Yes, among reshaping the entire financial picture of the NHL in the middle of a pandemic, players can now get their teeth cleaned every six months instead of 12.

Quote

Effective immediately, CBA §23.7(a) amended to reflect the Plan benefits as described in the current Plan description, including all Summaries of Material Modifications (“SMM”) and to add the following benefits:
• Dental Claims in Canada to be covered up to the current Specialist Fee Guide (previously covered up to General Practitioners Fee Guide).
• Increase the number of permissible Dental Exams from one to two routine exams per plan year.
CBA § 23.7(b) amended to reflect that coverage provided to Canadian residents includes coverage for eligible products and services that are provided in private clinics in Canada.

The schedule for the PIT series (time/TV TBD):

August 1

August 3

August 5

August 7 (if necessary)

August 8 (if necessary)

Gotta admit I am hoping the "not the playoffs" argument wins and RDS gets this series ... greatly prefer their TV crew to that from TVA

Well as it is official that 2019-20 sort of resumes with a special play-in ... believe I read the players now have three days to advise teams if the don't want to play ... wonder if any, let along many, will do so.

Sounds like outlook is bad for teams near the cap;

Bit on it from Burnside, The Athletic:

"With a flat cap for the foreseeable future, players’ earning potential is going to be blunted.

It means that teams that have been spending to the cap and have locked up assets long term are going to face difficult decisions on key players.

As one salary cap expert noted, “Whoever has salary cap space is going to rule the realm.”

According to the tremendous hockey resource CapFriendly.com, 17 teams had less than $1 million in final cap space at the pause. Two teams, Arizona and Toronto, had zero cap space. Dallas had $815.

The timing won’t be great for a crop of potential unrestricted free agents, such as Alex Pietrangelo, Torey Krug and Taylor Hall. But this new CBA is better than the alternative."

Habs have 6th most caproom in current list ($4.5m),

On its face it seems the Habs are in a good spot; i dont have a clue who needs resigned, who gets raises and what kind of raises will need to be given out?

Alzner wasted contract $$ might hurt a bit more now.

The "solution" for Alzner might be to see if they can move him as a $2.3125 defenceman (i.e., retain 50%) ... FOR ANYTHING ... pucks, jockstraps, expired gift cards ... that puts him in the Jordie Benn / Greg Pateryn cap-hit range ... Alzner has not (IMO) played as poorly as perceived by many, just not provided what was expected when he was signed ... and he has been great with how he has handled playing in Laval ... but he is unlikely to be a Hab again ... and every $2.3125 million helps exploit other teams

Lots of teams in cap trouble to play trade rumours with ... but that will be an "off-season" discussion

A trade with retention was my conclusion of what Plan A should be when assessing the different buyout scenarios with Alzner last month: http://www.habsworld.net/2020/06/when-is-the-right-time-for-the-habs-to-buy-out-karl-alzner/

The return in that instance would probably be another player that would be buried in the minors or bought out but whose contract is structured in such a way that the Habs would still save a few bucks in the end (similar to the Sergei Samsonov trade from years ago).

Sheesh, the body isn't even cold yet.

Portending something happening to Alzner?

Trade and buy-out have been speculated ... he could also ask for the deal to be terminated ... if the Habs won't keep him on the team but don't want him in Laval they could look at a loan to Europe ... or ... he could also just walk away and play in Europe (meaning he gets suspended rather than terminated).

IMO ... the first two most likely ... third a long shot ... loan very unlikely ... and walking away is possible but lowest chance of happening.

Helping with the potential for a trade, his actual salary is $3 and $3.5 million the next two season, less than his $4.625 cap-hit ... he is thus the proverbial "free cap space" player ($1.635 & $1.125) ... not huge but could be made even more enticing if Habs retain some of both cap and salary.

So, the new CBA kind of saves Nashville's ass regarding Weber potential early retirement, doesn't it ?

Yup ... may have been an alternative concession since they did not allow for any "free/amnesty" buyouts
