Danis can make it to the NHL, just as Garon. They both can become starter too (they still have to prove it) but nothing is elite about them. Two Patrick Lalime IMO nothing to win a cup or to rewrite history.

Now Price...

He's in Theo's class minimum... because of size and mental thoughness, he might reach the supra elite class.

a scout in a RDS article said that Price was the best Junior goalie he had seen in the last 10 years (:o Luongo?)

-----------------------------------

Translation:

Timmins is happy with the players they drafted.

He's very happy about their two first picks but they wish they could have drafted two defensements from the QJMHL. They were both drafted before the Habs could have selected them.

So guess what? they went BPA again and again...

I'm starting to think that Habs draft relying on the BPA strategy... just a feeling though I might be wrong. :monkey:

A goalie in the 1st round - it was quite a surprise as I saw it today but Alex already told me how great this guy will be. :P

It seems like a very good pick, also the 2nd rounder with Latendresse. Another surprise here that this guy was still available at this time but hey, he can be a big steal for the HABS. All over I think it was a good draft for the team. :/)

Maybe Luc Bourdon?

Funny, just found this old picture I took on November 24th at the Canada-Russia challange, one of the few pictures I took... and look who it is, Latendresse... I was sitting right next to the players entrance, I said hi to him... wished him good luck. Pretty funny we ended up drafting him. Never did I think that was a possibility back then.

Although I probably would have traded down for an extra pick or two. When I saw the pictures someone posted and realized how big Price was for a 17 year old, I knew he would go high. I actually thought Minnesota would draft him.

As I said from the beginning, once you get past Crosby, Johnson and Ryan, there isn't really much difference in the next 20 or 30 prospects. I like Price because he has great size, is a bright kid, and was one of the youngest prospects on the board. He is a year younger than "Ben the Chicken" (with his feathered highlighted hairdo), it could have been worse.;)

hehe, since thats the case he'll probably approve of this pick.

The pick will grow on you. The thing with goaltenders is that they take longer than skaters to contribute as a rule. Price has as much upside as anyone in the draft outside of Crosby, I think.

[Edited on 2005/7/30 by beckham]

Price was the best player available at #5. Latendresse was a steal at #45. Forecaster had them rated at #8 and #9 overall, TSN had them at #7 and #21 overall, with the stipulation that #21 (Latendresse) could slip into the top 10.

Congratz to beckham, our favourite idiot, for being the only one to hit this one head on.

Wow, I remember reading this thread ... laughing how bent out of shape people were getting - I had no clue who this Price fellow was, but I remember thinking, "trust Gainey!" I'm glad Gainey and Timmins are picking, and not all these armchair GMs who think they could do a better job than Gainey.

On a side note, Hamilton will have one killer team Next year because of these draft picks and some others: Price, Lil' ####, Carle, Veltenkov (sp.?), D'Agostini ... and maybe some of the western boys too if they decide to give up on their final year of junior eligibility.

Thanks Alexstream for resurecting this thread. I sat and read through each and every post. It felt quite cleansing actually, cause it gives you the opportunity to see how we "overreact" to certain incidents which might not have made sense to us at that specific time.

After picking Carey Price 5th overall:

Some wanted Gainey, Timmins and the rest of the crew to walk off the Jacques Cartier Bridge...

Other's were skeptical, but expressed confidence and blind faith in our GM and scouting dept.

and Beckham (who would have thunk it.. ) hit the nail right on the head..

In retrospect, we should be thanking our lucky stars that the Habs went out on a limb and drafted this kid. He his the real McCoy...

I can't wait to see what kind of rabbit Gainey will pull out of his hat this year. My personal feeling is that we will trade both 1st picks away to move up and draft Esposito (whether we like it or not).

Can't wait to resurrect the 2007 Draft Day Thread two years from now to see how many fans overreacted to the Canadiens moving up to draft an overhyped and possible cronic perennial slacker...

I hope I don't get "Banned like Beckham" cause of my belief that the Habs made a good decision in drafting Esposito.

Those western boys (Maxwell, White) can't give up their last year of junior eligibility next year, because they have 2 years of junior eligibility left. You can't be a teenager and play in the AHL. They both have 1988 birthdates, which disqualifies them from playing in the AHL until their junior team's season is over, much like Chipchura in 2005-06.

Its more then good... its awesome!

He was a projected 1st rounder, some people though high first rounder. He's the big powerful forward we've been missing. What a steal!

Awesome move by the habs to get him.... This puts me in a much better mood after getting Price (Nothing personal against Price, I just didnt want a goalie)

Man, reading through this thread is a riot. Everyones reactions when Price gets picked and also when Latendresse gets picked. Funny stuff. Anyways, I was actually looking for a thread to talk about Gilbert Brule. Since so many people at the time wanted Gainey to pick him it's funny now because Edmonton just waived him. SOOOoooooooooo, If you want him you can have him. Does anyone still want him? ^_^

On RDS Andre Savard said they had Carey Price ranked 5th, so they just went with their BPA, plain and simple. I'd wait to see how Price does at the WJC (if get the starting job) before placing him ahead of Fleury.

I still can't believe we got Latendresse, and so far down too. If he could only improve his skating the way Ribeiro improved his (Ribs could barely go blueline-to-blueline in the NHL at 18 yrs old), "Tenderness" might be a real steal.

^_^

I wanted Kopitar and was shocked when they picked Price. After listening to Gainey I bought into

what he was saying although reluctant about how long it would take Price to make the Canadiens.

Theo imploded, Price had an outrageous season and I could have cared less that Kopitar had such

a strong NHL rookie season.

But the experts on this board are over Gainey all the time, it was no different 3 years ago

As for Brule, I wasn't interested and I was happy as hell that they did not end up with Pouliot.

Thank you Minnesota from saving Gainey/Timmins from making that mistake!

Mmmmmmmmm, sounds good!

I'm guessing Gratton's lion, Cheever's stiches, Dion's "beak", Bannerman's indian and Simmons' cobra top the list. I doubt there's lot of new masks in there, they suck so bad.

Someone should forward a copy to Price so he feels the embarassment of wearing a stupid mask.

:wall::wall::wall::wall::wall:

why... Trade Theo for Crosby in 2 days or Ill never trust u again Gainey. This is the worst ive ever seen. Right now the drafting of matt higgins and Jason Ward looks really good... the drafting days of Rejean Houle looks kinda nice too. this guy better be the new Patrick Roy or I want Gainey gone. This is worse than Goodenow and the NHLPA. Im so mad that I might take some of this back in a day or two but right now who cares about the damn draft... why didnt we get the 30th overall pick instead... Wouldnt be so damn dissapointed then...

AAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH

time to drink beer and forget.

cya tomorrow if Im still alive :P

The first 4 pages of this thread were hilarious. I have to admit, when I watched the draft I was a little puzzled by the decision to draft Price but I remember thinking that Gainey/Timmons know what they are doing and to relax.

I took a lot of abuse from co-workers and backed up the decision by just saying over and over, "We'll see in a few years who's laughing." At the time I was only saying that because I didn't know what else to say, luckily now I look like a genius. People still say to me how amazed they were that I could predict this would pan out.

I believe we should trust the management and upper brass of this team, as they have not failed us too much since BG took over and we have constantly been improving.
