Habs sign Ilya Kovalchuk

Typical but wouldn’t u just test what you got from your youth then gamble on him? This is the type of thing’s I get tired of seeing. If you’re going to go with youth go with youth.

I hate that kind of move too. In my view, Kovalchuk is finished. Money wasted.

So you wouldn't rather call up a kid that's been playing good in the AHL. Give him some playing time in the NHL rather than give it to guys like kovalchuk and weise

I am tired of these washed up player type of moves. At this point in the season just become a lottery pick team. At least we will get a skilled player out of it.  What this does is takes a top 10 pick out of our hands and makes it a 15-20 pick.

You can’t have it both ways. In one thread people talk about rushing kids rather than letting them develop in the AHL. In the next, people want to call them up and play them on this dumpster fire of a team to get “NHL minutes”. You’re rather optimistic (ha) if the addition of Kovalchuk vaults that Habs 5-10 spots in the standings. Who would you call up? Evans? That’s about it that I can think of from a  “kid” standpoint, There are already 5 Rocket players with Montreal (Vejdemo, Weise, Peca, Barber, Poehling)...you want more of Hudon?

If they wanted to sell, they'd be keeping the youngsters up and giving them bigger roles, not sending them down.

Laval isn't exactly loaded with young talent up front yet.  Of the top-25 in our prospect rankings heading into the season, only four are forwards that are under contract.  Suzuki and Poehling are two of them and another is Joel Teasdale who has been out for the entire season.  That leaves Jake Evans as the only prospect of consequence that hasn't been recalled.  (For what it's worth, I've have recalled him over Weise.)  There are a few good forwards in the system (it's D-heavy at the moment) but they're not signed.

Shortly after his contract termination, it was reported that at least six teams had shown interest (Montreal wasn't among them, by the way).  He was being selective as he wanted to go to a contender but those teams either didn't have interest or a roster spot available.  He also let the KHL signing deadline lapse last week because there was enough NHL interest.  So this probably isn't a case of no other team being interested.  I don't think he'd have trade value but if he did alright on the power play and a contending team had a rash of injuries like Montreal's, maybe there's a late pick or something they could get but it wouldn't be anything of consequence.

That’s not what the leafs did during the Matthews draft year. Media was reporting they kept Nylander down so the team would actually be worse. Don’t remember if Marner was up it not.

He couldn't make it in LA what makes you think it's going to be any different here?

Exactly. LA is second to last in the West. And hasn’t played for more than a month. This is ridiculous.

Which is it? Will he move the Habs up from a “top 10 pick to picking 15-20” or will he be a non factor?

I don't want it both ways. The reason why we're nothing but a bubble team every year is because Montreal wants it both ways.

I for one am in favor of a full rebuild and core change here. Yes that means trading guys like Price Weber and Petry. This way we become a lottery team for the next 3 years and actually be able to have some skill on this team.

I am more than happy to wait a few years knowing that we will be a cup contender for a long time.

He will be taking us out of a top 10 lottery pick.

Marner was back in junior while Nylander was held down for service time purposes; he was recalled once he couldn't accrue a year towards free agency.  That situation doesn't exist with anyone on the Habs.

Yea, that will happen. I wouldn't worry about a 35 plus year old washed up NHL player effecting the habs playoff run or picking in the top 10

Did I just hear on the NHL network that MB said something to the effect we are trying to make the playoffs and are not sellers?

I Get ragged on for mentioning both Scandella and Kovalchuk as possible trade candidates, and they trade for both..

Probably a stupid question, but is Kovalchuk'contract pro-rated or something?

Yeah, that is a common reaction by a handful of regulars; shouldn't discourage you from contributing.

On my end, it motivated me to read-up more about the teams, players and to learn more about what is valuable in a player at different stages of their career or the team's needs.

Case in point, the LAK-CH-Kovalchuk love triangle :)

You're right, for sure.

Without injuries, it's unlikely Kovalchuk get signed. The guy is not a top 6 forward anymore, but he still has an elite release... The contract isn't hurting the team

Yes. He basically has the league-minimum $700K/$70K two-way contract, pro-rated for the season, so we only pay about $350K.

The Kings have already paid Kovalchuk $3M this season, and I suspect he wasn't hard up for money before that, either. So the minimum salary is a non-issue -- what Kovalchuk was looking for is an opportunity to show that he can still play (and play next season).

You just spent two pages complaining that bergevin doesnt get enough talented players for free and now you complain when he does.

I'm good with the Kovalchuk signing...almost no risk.  If you use him pretty much exclusively as a PP specialist, it could work out very well.  Have him strictly as a one-timer option...he's ether the shooter, or the decoy to get Weber clear to let one go.

100%. I have no problem with the move, it's cost-free and it'd be fun just to see that name on a Habs jersey, but I expect basically zero from this.

For all the we go on about our "bright future" it may be telling that there are no young FWs in Laval who warrant even a call-up at this juncture.

Already on the nhl team are kk, suzuki, poehling, and vejdemo.  How many more do you expect in the 20+ year old group in laval?

The next wave of talented forwards arent eligible for callups in caufield, ylonen, fonstad, mcshane, olofsson, etc...

He very well might be finished.

That said we have so little money invested.  Nhl minimum plus its a two way contract.  And we have so many forwards hurt right now, that its worth a shot.

Marner was in the OHL so he wasnt an option.

Nylander came up in the second half of the season.

Thank you

Dreger interview said there were a few top teams interested, but Kovalchuk didn't want to wait and also get 4th line minutes... We'll see how this goes with Julien...

Yeah we traded a fourth round picknfor a fifth rounder in getting scandella, gave up a defenceman who is horrible and not exactly young, and then we signed a guy at nhl minimum without giving anyone up.

Bergevin is really mortgaging the future here....
